Here's the first book in a brilliant new trilogy by the author of The Navigator. The Ring of Five, set at a school for spies, is full of surprises as well as fascinating questions about loyalty, destiny, and what it means to be a spy.

Danny Caulfield doesn't know how he ended up at a mysterious academy called Wilsons. A few of the students are pretty scary. Someone tries to...more

Danny Caulfield s heterochromatic eyes and pointy facial features are often the targets of his classmates jokes, but when his chronically absent parents decide to transfer him to a boarding school, Danny discovers that his appearance might be the key to saving the world. Whisked away in the middle of the night, Danny arrives at Wilsons, a school for spies located between the underworld and our world, where he must learn how to infiltrate an evil army threatening to break through to our realm....more

Overall this book was good not bad, but good. The main reason I rated it 3 was because of the plot .It was a good concept combining fantasy with espionage, but the book needs some serious improvement. the writing style was crappy and there was almost no humour throughout the book!!!! Also the protagonist,Danny was kinda weird sometimes BLUSHING... for the most stupidest reasons..

Also I felt that this book was a copy of the book "Scorpia" the sixth book of the Alex rider series.
Danny, already irrit...more

This was reminiscent of Harry Potter but not in a way that makes you feel all nostalgic about the first time you read it. It was more like, (big heavy shoulder-raising sigh) “another copy-cat wanna-be, I suppose I’ll soldier my way through it.” And I did, well, mostly. I admit to skimming the last forty pages or so. I just couldn’t get into it enough to muster up the energy to truly care. Danny’s parents decide to send him away to a private school, but Danny is sort of kidnapped and taken to a d...more

Well. Hum.
I definitely liked the idea of a school of spies but that's it.
The books has about 400 pages during which
1. the boy is kidnapped and brought into another world altogether
2. learns he is given a mission the whole world (the human one as well as the lower one) depends on
3. goes on a complicated and dangerous journey (after having decided having been kidnapped is nothing one cannot forgive) into the heart of the enemy's base, btw now hating the ones having given him the mission, and deci...more

I won this copy of The Ring of Five through Random House, and I'm glad I did because I quite enjoyed it.

Danny Caulfield thought he was going to the boarding school but after getting into a mysterious cab, he's taken to Wilsons, an academy for spies. There, he befriends Les, Dixie, and Vandra, all with extraordinary talents. Danny is shocked to find himself being the target of a murder plan, and quickly realizes he has a mission to complete.

The beginning quickly takes you into the story already...more

Danny Caulfield is a loner. No one seems to stay around too long with him, not even his parents. The kids at school all tease him for his physical abnormalities: Two different colored eyes, one Blue and the other brown, and a triangular shaped face. But things may be changing for Danny when his parents decide to send him to a boarding school called Heston Oaks. The story begins with Danny in his room awaiting a cab to take him to Heston Oaks. His parents are not around to watch him off. From the...more

A definately fun read for fans of Harry Potter, supernatural stories, spy stories etc. Danny's parents really don't pay much attention to him. He's a strange young man with two different colored eyes that are a result from and "accidental" surgery his parents claim. When Danny is shipped off to a private school after not being able to fit in at his regular school he finds himself kidnapped by the taxt driver (His parents couldn't even be bothered to drop him off at school!) When he arrives at th...more

The beginning was confusing but as it progressed its really good. Vandra the physik Dixie (A.K.A airhead) and the popping in an out of place crazy and not to mention Les the oldie but goodie guy with white angel wings. What's with the two worlds its difficult to understand but whatever the ring choosing Danny. Danny liking the feeling of power. Oh MY gosh he almost shot Smyk in the head with a derringer and Longford was watching all I have to say is holy s@$t is he going to join the five what ha...more

Aaron handed this book to me after he plucked it off the book shelf. It felt like Harry Potter but with a spy theme though not nearly as well written. (It is possible that part of that may have to do with being written by an Irish author. I felt the same way about the Artemis Fowl books.) I was more than half-way through the book before it felt the story was really moving and I wondered how it could possibly reach the climax with so few pages left. But the story did end in a timely manner. I am...more

This author looks like he started out writing adult books. He is the author of "Resurrection Man". The book is confusing and full of cliched writing, but the premise is unusual: a boy is sent to a school for spies and he is successful because of his capability to betray. This is an interesting concept and not one I've seen in a children's book. Perhaps ,this accounts for my discomfort without the book over all. I feel the author has a message or concept he is using fiction to expound.

Many people say it's a Harry Potter knockoff. Maybe. But it's not like Harry was the first special kid ever. Nor was Hogwarts the first magical or otherwise special school.

The spy concepts are neat and you're not certain where the book is heading, which is a very good thing.

But the book was missing a bit of spark for me. I enjoyed it but all the way through I kept thinking: This book is just short of being awesome. So in the end, 3 stars because I liked it and enjoyed.

This is an exciting story of deceit, action and espionage as we meet the kids at Wilson's Spy School. It questions loyalties and friendship and entwines good and evil as Danny tries to figure out his destiny. I would describe it as a mix of Harry Potter crossed with Cherub for ages 10+.

Read this if you liked the Percy Jackson series, the Charlie Bone series, The Mysterious Benedict Society, the Nightmare Academy series or anything where kids get up to mischief!

I liked this book, but I do feel it could have been a bit better. It seemed like everything was too quickly to seem realistic. Also, this book seemed like a very good cross between the Gallagher Girls series and The Lord of the Rings. It's a very interesting combination, but this book proves it can be done.

I would give this book a 3.5 but you can't do that with the stars. It was a better than average book and clever. It seemed to me to be set up for a squeal or a series. The characters where fun. Although there were no surprises (fairly predictable), it was still a good book--an enjoyable read.

This book was worth the 5 stars, the pace was excellent. The characters were great, and the storyplot kept me guessing the whole time. Can't wait til book 2 comes out. I'm placing his other books on hold at the library now! Love him!!!

All I can say is, again, i really liked the plot and the ideas put into the book, not to mention the personalities of each character.

This book is alsome with so many twist and to betray some one like danny did. I could never do that, it must have been hard on him.

Two worlds, upper and lower. Teenage boy from the upper world goes to spy school in the lower world where he learns he belongs to the Ring of five, the bad guys. He He has to stay a good guy in order to save both worlds.

good book. Janet even liked it.

I have to admit I lost interest and could not make myself finish it. Cool concept but not for me.

Think Hogwarts only they are training spies instead of Wizards

Danny Caulfield isn't sure exactly how he got to Wilson's, a mysterious academy overrun with ravens and spies. Oh, he remembers the strange taxi ride (at terrifyingly high speeds), but why is he there? And why does everyone keep saying that he's someone he's not? Danny is determined to find his way home--once he figures out where he actually is.

Imagine Harry Potter as a spy.

The first title in what might end up being a pretty great series. A child thinks he’s going to a boarding school, but ends up at a school for spies in an alternate fantasy dimension. He is immediately thrown in the middle of a battle for the survival of the world itself, and the book has a very interesting way of handling what appears to be the classic good/evil battle on the surface. Excellent book, I can’t wait for the next one to come out. Highly recommended.
Autumn
Interesting idea, with a unique plot.
