Let me just start off by saying that I had no idea that this a second book. (I know, I know, I can be a moron sometimes!) Someone randomly lent it to me and I always being keen for a good fantasy novel just started reading it. I will admit at some points I found myself wondering if I was a missing something but I thought maybe it would be revealed later on in the book. And surprise surprise it was! That was round about when I found out it was a sequel. But I was too far in by then to stop readin...more
In this sequel to 13 Treasures, the story of the human world, the fairy world, and where those two worlds meet
continues. In this sequel we are reintroduced to Fabian and Tanya, who has the unusual gift of seeing fey in the human
world. Although Tanya has a piece of the story, this is about Red, and picks up her story with Red in the harsh and
dangerous fairy realm searching for her abducted brother. Keeping the readers’ interest, the story alternates amongst Red’s past beginning with the death of...more

What worked for me: The Faerie lore continues to follow traditional tales while expanding them. Red and Warwick actually get to attend the feast where the switch between the rule of the Seelie and the Unseelie Courts occur and I thought both courts were portrayed well. There is just enough darkness in the Unseelie to remain true to the myth without making it too dark for children. The Seelie, while not as dark, are shown to be just as heartless and unthinking of using huma...more

Michelle Harrison knows a lot about fairy lore. She takes this knowledge and writes a story about an early teenage girl who has the second sight and her toddler brother. Rowan has always seen fairies. They are not beautiful and kind creatures but malicious and stink of earth other smells not so pleasant. She and her brother are suddenly orphaned and sent to a home for orphans. But fairies do lurk in this home and eventually a greedy fairy starts kidnapping babies and replacing them with "changel...more
The Thirteen Curses is a story of what happens when our world and fairy land come together. But this isn't the Fairyland of gossamer winged beings granting human wishes, rather one where the fairies are more like pixies or even goblins, teasing and tricking people, stealing human children and replacing them with their own. Rowan's brother has been taken by the fairies, to free him she must find the 13 missing charms of an enchanted bracelet, which were once treasures but have now become curses -...more
In my opinion this was perhaps better than the first one merely because it seemed to go into more depth and detail in that the characters were given the chance to really come alive here with detail and a history. I loved the way that we were introduced to one of the characters from the first novel, but that we were also able to really dive into her life and gain a better understanding of who she is and what she is all about. I felt that the adventure she had to go meant that the reader became mo...more
I loved the first book, so I was eager to read this one too. I like how it contained more about Rowan Fox, who is a really interesting character. This book also had more about the 13 treasures, which made the title fit more than in the first book, where the treasures played a very small role. The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that it has "sequel syndrome", where it constantly reminds readers of details from the previous book. I'm okay with a few reminders, but it seemed like every ot...more
I enjoyed this second book in the '13' series very much. In this book some of the characters travel to the faerie realm and I particularly loved the sense being in a familiar landscape but a totally unfamiliar and terrifying alternate version of it. I still think that the author manages her settings better than her characterisation but I don't think that in this case it detracted too much from the overall affect of the book. Sometimes the most compelling part of a story is the setting rather tha...more
This book 13 Curses is the continuation of 13 Treasures. Red the girl who's brother was took away from her. She vowed that she was going to get him back. That is why she traded with Tanya beacuse her brother is in the fairy realm so when Tanya was going to get sucked in the fairy realm forever Red took her place to get to her brother. Nell the new maid in the Elvesden manor was sucked in to the fairy rings which leads to the fairy realm. Warwick Fabians father heads out to find Nell. This whole...more

My Thoughts: This story had everything I was waiting for in the first book. More about the fairies, more about the 13 treasures and more Red.
There were times when I thought Red was a little too full of herself but overall I was glad she was the main character in this book. Tanya, Fabian and even Warwick are also important in this.
I liked how the fairies were represented. With the Seelie being "good" and the Unseelie being the...more

Red takes center stage this time around, having traded her life for Tanya's, and she now finds herself in fairy land--hunted and caught by a disgusting old creature called the Hedgewitch, held captive in a cellar, and doomed to die most unpleasantly. The arrival of Warwick (captured as he was attempting to rescue Florence's new housekeeper, who strayed into the woods) is a surprise, and even more surprising is the Hedgewitch's sudden poisoning and death. Warwick and Red are led to the Fairy Cour...more

Tanya has discarded the charm bracelet that reminds her of the previous summer’s nightmare from The Thirteen Treasures. Burdened with bad memories, the bracelet is left on Florence’s kitchen table while Tanya (back at her grandmother’s house for mid-term vacations) and Fabian venture into Hangman’s Wood to return Mad Morag’s magical compass. It belongs with her now that, as promised, it no longer works for the children. As the duo enters the woods, the bracelet, alone on the table, reminds the r...more
Fairies! Goblins! Witches! Welcome to The Thirteen Curses.
After reading Michelle Harrison's fantastic debut novel The Thirteen Treasures, I was so excited to get stuck into The Thirteen Curses. Having now read both books, I'd go so far as to say that Harrison is up there with my favourite UK authors, and is now in the good company of Marcus Sedgwick, Sarra Manning and Lucy Christopher. Seriously, she's that good.

When Red Fox saw her brother stolen from the childrens' home, she vowed to get him back no matter what it took. The Thirteen Curses is the story of her struggle to do that.
The book starts with an overlap of the first book, told from Red's point of view as she finds her way around the faerie realm. Gradually, we learn more about her tragic past but Red isn't the kind of girl to let you feel sorry for her. She's feisty and determined and doesn't let anything stand in her way. The Thirteen Curses concentrates on the story of Red, who was one of my favourite characters in the first book The Thirteen Secrets. At the end of The Thirteen Secrets, Red swapped places with Tanya and became trapped in the fairy realm. Red is determined to find out what happened to her brother who was kidnapped by the fairies and sets off on a journey to the fairy court. Whilst confronting the fairy court, Tanya discovers that she will have to carry out a bargain, in order to see the safe retu...more

It's kind of amazing how successful the "Disney-ization" of fairy tales & fantasy creatures has been. People in America tend to forget (if they ever even knew) that the original versions of those sweet movies laden with talking animals & happily-ever-afters, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm, for instance, were seriously dark. SERIOUSLY. And that most of the otherworldly creatures who populate them were also not cute or fuzzy. Fairies are a great example of this - fairies really messed w...more
The Thirteen Curses is the dark and edgy sequel to the spectacular, The Thirteen Treasures.
A supporting character from The Thirteen Treasures, Red, takes centre stage in the sequel. Red is a runaway and hid in Elvesden Manor and then saved Tanya’s life at the end of The Thirteen Treasures. We switch between Tanya and Red in alternate narration, one of my favourite formats to read. I loved learning more about the brave, daring and loyal Red and finding out, through flashback chapters, how she liv...more

Red's little brother has been kidnapped by fairies. In order to get him back, she goes before the fairy court where she begs for his life. She strikes a bargain wherein she must find all 13 charms from a bracelet in order to get him back. Red and her friends must now seek out all 13 treasures, except for they have turned into curses, each one worse than the one before it.

This is yet another sequel that I managed to read before the first book in the series. Despite this I found it easy to be drawn into the book and the characters. I found them easy to relate to and could even imagine that fairies truly existed as in the book!

I think there are two other books prior to this one, but I didn't read them yet, and actually I don't think you need to. I picked up this book with no problem which is pretty neat.
It was an entertaining book. I don't want to be super critical because the book is intended to be for YA/8-12years, so my hang ups on knowing the direction of the story prior to the ending and not being surprised, is a reason I rarely read mystery stories anymore.

After reading the first in this series, 13 Treasures, and enjoying it, I was happy to get an advanced reading copy of this sequel. I'm not a big fan of fairy stories, but this book was about half based in the fairy realm and half in the real world, so it had enough non-fairy stuff to please me. It took me longer to get into this one than the first, but when the three main young characters, Red/Rowan, Tanya, and Fabian (who I grew to really like and root for in the first book) set out to find the...more
