Keri Arthur has been one of my favorite authors since I discover her Riley Jensen series. Mercy Burns is the second installment in her Myth and Magic series. This book is a good solid read and I loved the lure of the dragons. The traditions and world building for their culture was unique and interesting. The schism between the dragon council and the cliques was well done and a main plotline for the story; I wonder if Ms. Arthur has any plans to carry that forward??

Perhaps I read too many Keri Arthur books to really appreciate this one, but I actually kept forgetting who the character was and expected her to go into Vampire Mode (a la Riley Jenson).

Mercy is a draman, a half dragon (as if that doesn't paint some twisted image involving an oversized reptile and a case of lubricant) being that grew up in a clique with other dragons and draman. Mercy is a draman, a half dragon (as if that doesn't paint some twisted image involving an oversized reptile and a case of lubricant) being that grew up in a clique with other dragons and draman. Looked down upon by the dragons and seen as pests that threaten to reveal their existence to humans, Mercy and her fellow draman are subjected to emotional, physical and sexual abuse from dragons; as a result many abandon their homes to start "rogue villages". Mercy's best bud, Rainey (obviously word-of-the-days in this village), realises that her sister as been killed after one such rogue village was wiped out in secret. We start the book with Rainey's unfortnate death.
Even though Mercy is supposed to be a journalist, she must be the quietest and most unfriendliest journalist around. With two friends and a brother listed as her buddies, Mercy expects to unravel the mystery behind Rainey's death before Rainey's dragon soul is cursed to walk the earth for eternity. Well, the journalists I know have at least 20 people they can pool information from - maybe Mercy should re-examine her life's calling to something more suitable.

Anyway, Mercy eventually gets kidnapped and meets Damon, a Meurte - a dragon assassin also researching into the village's systematic genocide. Damon doesn't really like dramans either.

Doesn't take a preschooler to realise that Mercy is going to lust after this assassin as his eyes appear to convey complete dialogues and her emotions do "happy dances" every fifth paragraph.
Despite the threat of a painful death and condemning her best bud's soul to damnation, eventually Mercy and Damon spend HOURS doing the horizontal tango.

Note: how is it that these women have libidos that can be awoken by sparrow farts? Heavens if they ever take a bumpy car ride home.

Gifted with the ability to suck out a dragon's fire and super-concentrate a flame to a pin-prick, Mercy has a really bad ability to get seen in public by the bad guys. Luckily Damon and his strong nose come to the rescue each and every time.

Murdering the bad guys and realising Rainey's soul, Mercy and Damon part ways after a tiff over class structure.
Just when you thought it was safe for Mercy to go back to spinsterhood, Damon reappears 1 month later to declare his undying love with a dowry of chocolate cake.

Not the best, but fun nevertheless.(less)

Continuing her investigation, she meets with Angus, a sea dragon with information. Angus' mate is held hostage and is used to manipulate Mercy - he tells her of surviving a draman town massacre 30 years earlier, when he was a child - tells her where it happened, then he drugs her (only slightly), and turns her over to the bad guys.

the politics: two air dragon's cliques' kings sons have joined forces to oust their fathers, to increase their lands, and to take over the dragon's ruling council. one of the king's sons is Seth - her nemisis when growing up... the sons are killing dramam communities - in part because the hold them in low regard, and because they want their land - to put them in a stronger position to take over the council... and they have gone into their father's safes and 'rewritten' their 'wills' to name themselves as heirs... and were planning to kill their fathers....

Once captured with the help of Angus, she is put in an metal lined basement room with Damon - a council muerta. Muerta's, by natural 'shadow' ability and training were the enforcement arm of the council... he has been held there for 13 days, in the dark, so unable to 'reenergize' with the sun... she gives him some of her fire, and uses her ability to melt a door bolt, until they dcan burst through the door... he takes care of the guards, taking their fire so as to energize himself...

and they ultimately join forces, to track down the clues to figure out what is happening... when questioning the bad guys, he 'transmits' the interviews to the council so that they know what is happening... and ultimately the defeat the bad guys.

Damon, as muerta, does not expect to love or have a family - it is contrary to his job - making him vulnerable to an enemy, and dividing his focus... they enter a love affair, where he makes it clear that he cnnot give her his heart... she strives to know him... she proves she can take care of herself, and helps him out of a few situations...

and after they solve the mystery, defeat the bad guys, and she is able to release her friend's soul to the sun... she is on her own for a month, struggling to regain her equilibrium... her brother finally returns, with a pregnant mate (another story?), and then Damon is knocking on her door... he can't live without her, he has laid ground work to set up dialogues about damons with the council...(less)

In terms of paranormal romance, Keri Arthur scores pretty high on the sexytimes meter. When I read her Riley Jenson Guardian series (set in Australia! I love Australia!), after reading the first in paperback, I had to buy the rest electronically, because I was waaaaay too embarrassed to be caught reading them in public. In fact, there were times I would have to look around just to make sure no one was reading over my shoulder.

The Story
The basic conflict is between dragons and dramans, half-human and half-dragon offspring. The dragons see the dramans as lesser, good enough to use for services of any kind, good enough to beat and abuse, not good enough to live. And that just pisses Mercy off, dammit. Then Rainey's sister dies in a draman town and when Mercy and Rainey investigate, the whole town is gone. It seems several towns have been obliterated and no one cares. They're just dramans. Good to clear them out.

But no one felt the passing of those draman which meant they had been buried. Their souls trapped, for dramans and dragons must have their souls sung to aid their passing.

Targeted for asking too many questions, Rainey's dead and Mercy only has five days left to find her killers and sing her soul on. A slim timespan when death has a bead on Mercy for she will not stop hunting, searching for both Rainey's sake and the sake of those destroyed towns, for Rainey's sister who was caught in one of them, for the dramans who have no one else to care.

Worse, Mercy has encountered a council assassin seeking the same answers. The same council that would see all draman dead and Mercy is draman.

My Take
Okay, I enjoyed this. I wish it had the same depth as her Riley Jenson Guardian series and maybe more will develop as the series continues. I guess it just seemed too easy and Mercy just a little too strident as she so desperately desires Damon in spite of his draman prejudices. Or maybe I just wanted Arthur to more fully explain the differences between the Jamieson clan and the other dragon clans. There were so many teasers that Arthur threw at us that it's making me a bit nuts. I think the anthropologically-inclined side of me wants to hear more about the culture and lifestyle of the dragons/dramans and it's affecting my perspective.

Beautiful cover. I love the nude back of the gorgeous woman with the dreamy effect of the tattoos but the way Arthur describes the stain as twining around a dragon/draman's spine is not as it's pictured here.

Although I was a long time fan of Keri Arthur and currently still following her Dark Angels series, I was quite disappointed by this book. There was somewhat lacking in the story structure that made it both an Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. The story greatly involve more on the plot with the dragon and half dragon communities and its people particularly against Mercy with the various attempt on taking her life. There was a metaphor against prejudices between the dragons and draman. The principles in which the characters live and the scars they survived.

However, in the span of several days, although there are some heat between Mercy and Damon, the story wasn't enough to intrigue a reader as a whole. There are simply too many crime stories and politics to fit inside this one volume which doesn't do well with the romantic flow between the characters as it is a stand alone story. Thus making it a subpar version of a paranormal romance and a moderate contemporary novel despite the supernatural elements.

I just felt there's a real problem in cramming happily-ever-after romance in this book with the time length between the characters and its prominent enough that the characterizations doesn't expand much from what they're in the beginning. The whole dragon angle is interesting but if you really like a smouldering dragon UF that balanced with the romance, Thea Harrison's Dragon Bound is probably a better alternative than this book. I read the first installment of this series, "Destiny Kills," a couple of years ago or just under that. I wasn't a fan. I know I wouldn't have taken this one home but for the fact that I was digging through a Borders closing sale and I picked up this book without recognizing the author until I read the backleaf and thought, "Shit, I've read this book before...but it was a little different." That's when I recognized Arthur's name and that's when I knew: This was another installment in the series....more I read the first installment of this series, "Destiny Kills," a couple of years ago or just under that. I wasn't a fan. I know I wouldn't have taken this one home but for the fact that I was digging through a Borders closing sale and I picked up this book without recognizing the author until I read the backleaf and thought, "Shit, I've read this book before...but it was a little different." That's when I recognized Arthur's name and that's when I knew: This was another installment in the series. Hell, I hadn't even known it was a series till this moment. As a believer in second chances, particularly at store liquidation 70% off cover price listings, I took home some more Arthur with "Mercy Burns."

For the record, there is no adequate review for "Mercy Burns" that isn't also a review for "Destiny Kills" because, let me be frank, THEY ARE THE SAME BOOK. It's the same story, just following another character who is the half-sister of the male protagonist in "Destiny Kills" though he's nothing more than a glorified romantic interest to the [real] protagonist, Destiny.

In Destiny's book, Destiny is a sea dragon and her romantic interst is Trae, air draman (half dragon). In this Mercy's book, Mercy is a air draman and her romantic interest is Damon, full air dragon, who happens to also be a member of a killing elite force called "the muerte." I have no idea what inspired Arthur to name the DRAGON KILLING TEAM "Muerte" since nothing in the first or current book makes any historical presuppositions between dragon culture and Spanish language history, peoples, or mythologies. It feels like Arthur learned this word, thought it sounded cool, and added it to add some mystique or danger or something (Latin lovers are dangerous) to someone who what? wouldn't have had enough mystique or danger being just a MASTERFUL ASSASSIN IN AN ELITE DRAGON FORCE? Exactly. Made no sense.

Just like in the Destiny book, the Mercy book has a pretty immediate and totally illogical and unromantic romantic plot. Within less than a minute of hardly seeing one another, Mercy decides that she's in love with Death and, yeah, wants him RIGHT NOW and is in LOVE with him and he is cold and unfeeling and has a wall up because muertes can't fall in love blah blah blah.

Everything, from Mercy's back story of being abused and tortured and sexually assaulted and enslaved is contrived and somehow or another works itself into the romantic plot which makes it feel less than character developement and more like a ploy at feigning substance.

Plus, certain phrases are repeated ad nauseum. From the first book to this book and throughout both. Blarg. (less)

The sexy stranger called Death, is really named Damon. He's a certain kind of dragon that deals in death. Like an assassin so to speak, he kills who he's told to and sometimes that could be one of Mercy's kind if the kings call for it. There's a certain structure with the dragons in terms of status and Mercy doesn't rank very high being a draman. But she and Damon decide to work together because their means seek the same end. So they form a truce.

Damon and Mercy both try to fight their attraction to one another, but it isn't long before they let go. Yet Damon makes it clear early on that he cannot have a real relationship with Mercy.

The pacing is very good as Mercy has only 7 days to find her friend's killer to seek justice and still pray for her friend so that she may move on and rest in eternal peace. Should she fail to do this in 7 days, her friend is damned here on earth forever and will never have peace (Or some such thing). And Mercy already lost a day and change when she was in the hospital, so time is really not on her side and she has to work with Damon despite her better judgment to track down the killer.

There is definitely a lot of tension between these two. They are attracted to one another, but Damon can't get over their status quo--and he's not real jerky about it, just a tad.

Trae and Destiny even make an appearance at the end and it was pretty cool, just to see them. I always like that about series with different characters and what not.

Overall it was a fairly good read! The mystery element is pretty good. I couldn't really make any firm speculations, but it did have a nice ending to wrap things up! Definitely worth a read if you've read the first one. And there is a sneak peek at Darkness Unbound! Of course I forced myself (for sanity's sake) not to read it!

Keri Arthur is a writer that I continue to read. I have read her books and enjoy them. Mercy Burns is the second book in the myth and magic series.

I did like this book but I didn't feel a connection to Mercy & Muerte. Maybe Muerte need to be developed a little more for me to connect with or I needed to feel more of an attraction between them, but I will look forward to the next in the series.

Since Mercy was unconscious during that time, in order for Rainey’s soul to move on Mercy must avenge Rainey’s death by killing those responsible in the next 7 days. Mercy leaves the hospital and sets up a meeting with a man who was the original contact for her and Rainey and is drugged and kidnapped. While she is being held in a dark, steel box, there is another captive inside. This captive is a male dragon and one considered a muerte by his kind. Muerte means “death” in Spanish and basically Damon is an assassin who enforces the edicts of the dragon council in order to keep the race safe. Damon and Mercy work together to escape their captors and then strike an unlikely alliance to solve the mystery of several town disappearances. Both motivated by personal reasons and their ever growing attraction, they find out their investigation will lead them down issues that can alter the structure of their very race.

I found this edition in the series more fluid in its story flow than book one and I highly enjoyed the issues are characters were facing. You cannot help but feel bad about how persecuted the draman race has been treated by the dragons and the trials Mercy herself has gone through in her young life. She has quite a chip on her shoulder with regards to full-blooded dragons and poor Damon is the unfortunate victim of her fury in many incidences. Damon’s position as an enforcer for the council has left some blinders on with regards to the abilities of her species as a whole and he becomes educated quickly by Mercy. The race issue between dramans and dragons is a pressure item for this story that is hard to contemplate our duo of conquering. I love Mercy’s knowledge that she is already Damon’s soul mate if he chooses to claim her, which shows her inner confidence shinning as brightly as her flame. Damon’s belief in being the solitary killer is absolute, but watching him slowly but surely fall for Mercy is tantalizing. He really never has a chance. I personally also enjoyed the final chapter cameo of Destiny and Trae, which gives us nice warmth to Mercy’s life after so much grief. I felt the novel was filled enough action and romance to merit 4 stars and a recommended read for any of Keri Artur’s work.

There were some great paranormal/supernatural aspects to the story and its focus is the repression of the dramans and their society. It took me a week just to get through the first 10 pages. I kept falling asleep after reading a paragraph or two. It was really hard to get into this book. I had the same problem with the first book of this series, Destiny Kills.
I think part of my problem was that I kept thinking that this book followed the same main character as the first book of the series. So I was quite confused at first. I actually thought about giving up on this book and not finishing it. However, I hate not finishing a b...more

Mercy Burns is a complex tale full of twists and turns. This page turner contains one thrilling event after another. I love how Keri Arthur introduces us to another fantastic fantasy world of hers. The adventures and passion and fearsome fighting that are contained within this novel keep you going back for more. My first Keri Arthur and I was expecting a lot because of the popularity of her Riley Jensen series. I must have started with the wrong book to be able to appreciate Keri Arthur.

I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first. I think the first one intrigued me with the Nessie story, where this one had none of that. Mercy tended toward a personality that got on my nerves. She was obviously upset over the death of her friend and the prejudice against half dragons, so I will allow some character flaws due to stress. Mercy is a half dragon ( dram an) who is trying to discover who is responsible for the death of her best friend and for the extermination of a number of Draman settlements.
It turns out that Dramans are regarded as second class citizens in the dragon world and much of the book is spent hearing mercy go on and on about this to the love interest ( full dragon ).

There is much running around discovering who is behind the evil plot.

What I found very interesting about this book was how much of it dealt with discrimination. Of course it wasn't in a form we are normally familiar with, but discrimination is still discrimination where your color, or in this case your species.

Mercy believes the accident that caused Rainey’s death as well as her own injuries are the result of a case they have been working on which involves the ‘cleansing’ or deaths of other Draman in some towns, when she starts asking too many questions it starts to get noticed and whilst interviewing a possible lead, she is drugged and taken captive, in the same holding cell is a 'Muerte' who has been weakened by the darkness, he is a trained council assassin, his true name Damon 'aka Death' who is also working the same case as Mercy but for reasons of his own.

I absolutely loved Damon! he is a trained assassin working under the direction of the Council of Dragons, he is a loner, liking his solitude; he is from a long line of muerte who breed for necessity rather than for love so meeting Mercy and realizing she was a Draman had him baffled and she seemed to be the only person who didn't fear him, she actually felt safe being around him.

Dramans are classed as inferior to full breed dragons and aren’t treated all that well, Damon is reluctant to work with Mercy for this reason but admires her abilities and sees she could be useful for his own purpose.

I loved the relationship and banter between Damon and Mercy; they fight their feelings despite their attraction and chemistry, he was a bit of a jerk at times when it came to their ranking of sorts but they eventually succumbed to each other and gave in. The dialogue was snappy and the tension between them sizzled.

I was really drawn in to this story and enjoyed everything about it - the romance, action, adventure and mystery, the concept of the Dragons and Draman is fascinating, the world building is unique and captured my attention from the very first page.

I enjoyed seeing Damon and Mercy work together to resolve not only the issues within themselves but also that of the Draman deaths, it was a nice resolution. It was also nice seeing the reappearance of Destiny and Trae from Book 1, Destiny Kills.

The cover is also gorgeous!

A wonderful read; it is just a shame there won’t be anymore books in this series - I'll definitely be reading more books written by Keri Arthur.(less)

I can't stress my love for Keri Arthurs work enough. I haven't read a novel by her that I didn't like. Most I loved. This was no different. I instantly knew I would enjoy this read. It starts off with a push and stays airborne the whole time.

I only wish Mercy's past was brought into the picture more. We get the jest of it, but I would have liked a bit more. Damon(a.k.a Death/Muerte) was a cool character. Besides his steamy good looks, he's a lethal, stealthy, full blooded Dragon you don't want...more

I am a complete fan of all Keri Arthur's books and this series, featuring mercy, a Draman - half dragon, half human brings another feisty and fun female character. I happened to read this book in the series first, but now I'll be looking at reading the first and look forward to any that follow it.
Those of us who like dark natured heros will just love Damon. Wow!

This may have been long awaited but is was really worth the wait. I love the dragons in this series and this sexy story kept me interested the whole time. The bad guys were suitably menacing and the racial tension was a nice edge. I liked that he Damon learned the error of his thinking by Mercy's actions. Damons learning curve was worth the journey. I hope Keri Arthur add to this series soon.

Magical! Draconic! Enthralling! Dragons are so my new addiction. Keri Arthur gets up close and personal with these magical beast. Her storytelling powers allow you to fly and view the world as only a dragon can. I loved the bond Mercy has with her dragon spirit. "Muerte" is all man, deliciously dark with all the bonus attributes of a dragon. All I can say is, "When does the next book in the series come out?"

Well, I have to say that dying for a dragon sucks more than for most. If someone doesn't pray over your body at sunrise then your soul is doomed to roam for eternity. Mercy was unconscious when the sun rose over her best friend's body and now she has a week to take revenge and possibly still save her soul.
