This book is on the CCBC list of "50 Multi-cultural Books Every Child Should Know." Recommended for ages 4 - 8, it is a touching tale about a young girl who feels sad on her Uncle Peter's wedding day because he is her "best buddy" and she doesn't want to lose him to his new wife, Stella. "I'm his special girl. Just me. I am the jelly on his toast, and the leaves in his tea. Now, I am an umbrella turned inside out." The story ends beautifully with Stella giving her a very special gift--a box of b...more

Jenny is saddened about the fact that her favorite uncle, Peter is gettign married. As most children think, she was afraid that he was no longer goign to have time for her anymore. Everyone else was so excited, but Jenny was busy trying to get uncle Peter's attention. She felt so left out that she poured out the tea for the ceremony and filled the container with water instead. her mother was disappointed and wanted to know what was wrong. She told her mom everything as she sat on her lap and cri...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this touching, humorous story of a little girl who is having a difficult time accepting that her favorite uncle is getting married. "I'm his special girl. *Just me.* I am the jelly on his toast, and the leaves in his tea. Now, I am an umbrella turned inside out. I squeeze back tears."

Even so, she can't help but enjoy some of the festivities during the wedding day. And she has to admit that Uncle Peter's bride Stella is a rather awesome and lovely woman. But she continues to...more

"Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding" is told from the perspective of a young girl named Jenny who has a great relationship with her Uncle Peter. They do everything together, but when the day comes for Uncle Peter to get married, Jenny is jealous and feels left out.

The goal of this book is to show children that as families change over time, our love for each other can remain strong. However, what I found to be really interesting were the Chinese wedding traditions. Author Lenore Look takes us...more

"I'm his special girl. Just me. I am the jelly on his toast, and the leaves in his tea. Now, I am an umbrella turned inside out. I squeeze back my tears."
This is a wonderful book that tells of a special relationship between a young girl and her uncle Peter who is getting married and everyone is happy except Jenny. The author weaves her story through the ins and outs of all of the traditions of a Chinese wedding. First their are stories of the groom, the presents from the bride's family, old Chin...more

I admit I shed a few tears at the end of this award-winning book! [Yes, I not only cry at weddings, I cry over kids' books about weddings!] Jenny’s favorite uncle, Peter, is getting married, and she feels left out. She describes all the parts of the traditional Chinese wedding as she expresses her sadness over no longer being Uncle Peter’s best buddy. She also indicates what aspects of the ceremony have been modernized from what it would have been like one or two hundred years ago. In the end, h...more

This is a fun story about a young girl, Jenny, who favorite uncle is getting married. She is quite unhappy while everyone around is preparing the big day. She fears that once ger uncle gets married, he will forget about her or at least not spend as much time with her. She somewhat wants to stop the wedding, but of course she doesn't. The family does the traditional wedding things such as the bath before the wedding, giving present to the groom's family, and so forth. Meanwhile little Jenny is v...more

A fun and ultimately sweet book with a lot of great cultural details about--as per the title--amazing Chinese weddings, and even young readers will be able to smile at the unwitting self-involvement of the niece eagerly asking Uncle Peter if he wants to play basketball with her on his wedding day. However, the artwork wasn't quite appealing to me: although very distinctive and interesting, there was something jarring about the lack of realism and the lack of cartoon/comic style, and I was distra...more

Worth checking out from the library (more than once!)

A wonderful book for older preschoolers on up, that tells the story of a young girls sadness (envy) over her favorite uncle's wedding. This lovely picture book successfully weaves together a story of emotion, family, and Chinese-American culture.

I mean really, what better description can be given of a young girl upset by the upcoming marriage of her favorite uncle:

"I am his special girl. . I am the jelly toast, and the leaves in his tea. Now I...more

I loved this book and so did the young girls I read it to. The little girl in this book has an attachment to her live in uncle. In this story, she is upset by the fact that she is losing her uncle to another woman, he is getting married! This book takes the traditional Chinese wedding and brings it alive in a current time and place for all to experience.

One of the things I really liked about this book is that during the stages of the wedding the illustrator places emphasis on all of the beautif...more

I love it when I learn phrases in a language other than English. This book only provides a few, but it is full of other customs that are good to know, like bowing to show respect. It was interesting to compare the differences in American and Chinese wedding traditions. I really like how the character compared old and new wedding traditions. It made me think about how things change over time, even traditions. I think students from this background can relate to the events in the book and can discu...more

It was interesting to see the different traditions through the eyes of a child. I especially liked the "jumping on the bed for sweets" scene where she gets stuck with the healthy food. The illustrations were a little off for me, I am hypersensitive to the possibility of stereotypes after taking a multicultural literature class. The story itself really grabs the emotion of a little girl who is afraid to lose her favorite Uncle to marriage. I think it could be a good choice for an...more

This story is about a little girl named Jenny who attends her Uncle Peter's wedding. Jenny and Uncle Peter are very close, when he decides to get married, Jenny feels left out. She is used to her uncle spending a lot of time together and now his attention is on his new wife.

I liked this book, I think that all kids would like this book and feel like they can relate to this book. This book tells you about a lot of traditions in the Chinese culture. I would recommend this book for K-4. I think that...more

Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding was a charming and fun story. Jenny's Uncle Peter, her favorite, is getting married to Stella and Jenny is NOT happy about it. She tries several times to stall the wedding, to no avail. She is concerned that Uncle Peter will forget about her once he gets married. Lenore Look does a wonderful job of building Jenny's character and explaining the Chinese wedding traditions. Jenny is funny, mischievous and easily relatable to all.

I would recommend this book to...more

Immerse yourself in Chinese culture with these two beautiful books of celebration! I highly recommend both of these approachable books for K-4/5. I immediately connected with this golden line in Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding: “Now, I am an umbrella turned inside out. I squeeze back my tears.” – My son and I discussed these gorgeous words and what they mean… Uncle Peter’s Amazing Chinese Wedding is a beautiful story of a niece nervous about change when her uncle gets married. Another great example of asian americans in children's books. This book is nice to read about the time of chinese new year. Student's can learn about a culture and how a celebration works within that culture. I think many students could relate to the main character and how she feels about her favorite uncle getting married and people not paying much attention to her.

Lenore Look uses great metaphors in her writing - vivid, descriptive, and (usually) easy to understand for kids. At first I thought this was just going to be another in the usual kid is mad/jealous/insecure because his/her favorite aunt/uncle is getting married, but the inclusion and description of Chinese traditions plus the sweet ending proved me wrong.

Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding is a good book to teach your child a little bit about Chinese wedding traditions. It might also help a young one get over his or her feelings of jealousy if they think that a relative is ignoring him or her in favor of a new spouse. The narrator of the book, a young girl, is very sad on the day of her favorite uncle's wedding, and feeling neglected and ignored. She is reluctantly dragged through the stages of her uncle's wedding, and describes them and expla...more

A young girl is sad to see her favorite uncle getting married. She does realize that she will not loose her uncle but gain another aunt. Goes through the rituals of a Chinese wedding and has a lot of text. Not appropriate for story time

This story told by a young girl named Jenny, is a touching tale of an uncle's wedding. It is loaded with cultural traditions. The uncle whom is Jenny's best friend is getting married and jenny feels she will be losing him to someone else and he will not have time for her. But, the uncle and new wife include Jenny in the wedding and she feels better. Children will learn lots of traditional values from this story and that change is not always bad. This book would be good for prek-3rd grade.

Bought this book for Liam yesterday because it was on sale and I am trying to find more kids' books with Asian characters. The narrator is too cute and the story is very sweet. I recommend!

I loved it because my grandfather was Chinese. It is a very simple and colorful way to learn about traditions and teach them to young kids. Words of praise for Lenore Look!

I first began making picture books in kindergarten because my other career option at the time was stealing. But a life of crime requires practice and patience, neither of which I had, so I settled into industry, making what I coveted but what my parents could not afford to buy: beautiful books like the ones my teacher read to us in school.

Publishing was no problem in those days, not like it is no...more
