The Beatles Anthology
This extraordinary project has been made possible because Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have agreed to tell their combined story especially for this book. Together with Yoko Ono Lennon, they have also made available the full transcripts (including all the outtakes) of the television and video series The Beatles Anthology. Through painstaking compilation o...more

A comprehensive history of the Fab Four, starting off with short biographies of each of the lads, and then following their career together as a band. It concludes with an epilogue of each lad, as well, and a tribute to John Lennon.
I don't know how objective this account is, but it was certainly LONG. Loaded with narratives from those who knew the Beatles, and quotes from the Beatles themselves, and studded with photos, it was a lot to assimilate. I mean, really, by the end, I was fee...more

How could I have forgotten to add this book to my library? I love, love, love The Beatles. I was totally born in the wrong generation because I love all 60's music. Although The Beatles are by the far the most amazing from that generation and any generation since...in my humble opinion.

It's hard (that's what she said) to talk about The Beatles without getting hyperbolic excited. Talks too fast excited and confusing those around me into a boredom stupor. Channeling Chris Farley from those old Saturday Night Live skits, perhaps. "And do you remember when all of the boys gave themselves stage names? John was Long John Silver. Great short histories of what I think are the greatest musicians of all time, they have inspired many people to pick up a bass, guitar and to sing and they inspired me to learn guitar. For almost a decade they ruled the music industry and helped the 70’s phycadelia and other great events in American history progress. The book talks about their small start back in the late 50’s and how the band came to be. The book also has small bios of the Fab 4 and the history of the recordings and some very i...more
Wow. This book is an essential for Beatles fans.
Can be quite a struggle to get through, owing more to its sheer enormity than its content, but it was well worth the couple of months I spent slowly trawling through it. If you're interested in The Beatles enough to get this book in the first place, you're probably already at least a little familiar with their story. I have read this book more times than any other book, apart from religious texts, which is only fitting since I cannot even begin to fathom how many hours of my life have been spent listening to the Beatles music. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of my life it would be more appropriate to measure it in years.

Epping awesome. Granted the massive coffee-table book means that most people do just that...put it on their coffee-table to give the notion of being well-read.
Me? I love reading large, heavy, uncomfortbale books to read that have been a pain in the ass to travel on my daily work routine. That being said...phenomenal. If you want to know the story behind the Beatles...might as well take it from them. I mean, there was a lot of LSD and other drugs running amok thru their career, so I ...more

I can't really put into words my respect for The Beatles. Anything I said would just sound cheesy and lame. (Trust me, I've tried.) Just know that they're incomparable. And anybody who thinks they're no good or overrated just doesn't know what they're talking about. All they would have to do is listen, truly listen, and they would know. And maybe read this book. That would help too.

I wouldn't suggest this to a new Beatles fan, but to a dedicated one, this book is holy. It's an amazing time-line of the Beatles and there are a lot of new things to learn about the Beatles in this book.
It's also chock-full of funny and smart quotes that are bound to entertain.
Yes, it's a long book and will most likely take awhile to read. If you're a true Beatles fan, you'll enjoy every minute you spend reading the book.

This was a Christmas gift the year it was published. I had a long holiday of paging through hand-written lyrics, interviews and more. The pictures are worth the price (and weight) of the book and, of course, the stories make it priceless.
With the release of the newly remastered CDs, I've pulled it out again. It would still make a great gift for any Beatles fan.

The history of The Beatles in their own words. Ideal for the experienced Beatlephile, this epic volume is packed with surprising trivia from the Fab Four's nascent years performing in the primordial soup of Liverpool dance clubs and Hamburg's red-light district (during the pre-Ringo period). The novice reader is likely to be more puzzled at than captivated by the fragmented, stream-of-consciousness narrative that bops around between Beatles like a Hacky Sack on acid. I appreciated the wealth ...more
This is the ONE Beatles book...free of opinion, bias, ignorance and attempts at revisionist history because there is no narrator, no biographer...the story is told in the Beatles' own words, with a little help from their friends (including and especially George Martin).
Indispensable. It will take weeks if not months to read and you'll return to it over the years.

"By George Harrison"?! Not quite.
A collection of quotes straight from the horse's mouth--in this case, the Fabs themselves, along with a few important friends such as George Martin, Derek Taylor and Neil Aspinall--covering the entire breadth of their history. Tons of beautiful pictures and rarities included. A coffee-table book that fans will actually read.

This book will always be in my currently-reading list because its one of those books which I will constantly open and read something random and in no particular order. Like many people, I have read a lot of books about the Beatles, and you read some of the same facts over and over. But when you are a fan, you constantly see how good or bad a book about one of the Beatles is. I still watch "Help" and laugh hard when the Beatles walk into the restroom and George's shirt rips off, and lis...more
Amazing. This book taught me so much. It's great that the four of them wrote this, because they are the ones who know what happened, and they can call each other out on what didn't. Full of music and images, this book is a *must* for anyone who considers themselves a Beatle-maniac.
Unbelievable time line of the Beatles, their success, failures, and their rise to fame. I have never seen a bibliography like this. The details are exquisite. This book FEELS real and precise. It has some amazing facts in it and it holds nothing back. Loved this book.

I would divide 'The Beatles Anthology' into three parts. The Anthology albums, the Anthology videos, and this book. Like the other two parts, this is an essential experience and any self professed/self respecting fan of The Beatles would/should not be without it!
I'm nothing if not a Beatles fan, but I find this book mind-numbingly boring, as I did the ANTHOLOGY TV special.
My problem may arise from the fact that we do not have the interviewer's questions, just the interviewees's answers. I think this means reading this book (or watching the DVD) is comparable to watching a dubbed movie: Something crucial is missing. The context in which each answer is given has been removed. The interviewers clearly have put some words into each Beatle's mouth. The...more

This book is so good. I enjoy all the non-stop facts aabout The Beatles considering I am a big fan of them. I like the little biographies in the beginning of the book and it goes up until a few years after they broke up. It's phenominal so far.
The only downfall is that this is a really, really big book but I guess to some - that's not really a downfall.
This is a book every Beatles fan should pick up. If you haven't read it yet, stop reading reviews and buy it now.

This book is AMAZING. I got it at my library las year and was flipping through the pages nearly dying from excitement, my little 14 year old Beatlemaniac heart nearly stopping. XD I love the Beatles, and I LOVE THIS BOOK!
tons of photos and although it doesn't tell much about the infighting or what gear they were using, a great read. one of those that you can start reading from a random page and become engrossed.

This book was very enjoyable. I liked how it was set up like a scrapbook. It was interesting to get an inside look at their lives and how the music was created. IT was a fun Band Autobiography.
I picked this up on the bargain book table, thinking it would be a nice reference book but not expecting much more. When I got home I thumbed through and started reading a random page in the middle. I couldn't put it down. When I got to the end, I simply HAD to start reading again from the beginning. I truly can't believe I read the whole book cover to cover in only a few days.

Interested in the Beatles? Get their history straight from the source -- the band members themselves. There are lots of great quotes and insight in the book. My only complaints:
1.) The book was a bit heavy on the early years. Perhaps they were more interested in telling their story back then vs. the later years when they all weren't getting along as well.
2.) The book itself is physically big and heavy. Makes it a bit difficult for casual reading.

Yes, it's a giant coffee-table book, it was a tad difficult to actually hold and read. I didn't let that stop me though. I propped it up on the couch and paged through one of the most fun autobiographies I've read. The 'story' touches on all kinds of events throughout the Beatles career, even through the darker subjects (tad too heavy on the drugs, the eventual break up of the band) I found that the voice of the book stayed reasonably up-beat.

The complete bible for any true Beatles fan. A few stories I'd never heard before like Peter Fonda and the song She Said, She Said
