Shame on me for almost not "buying" this book. I say "buying" because I got it as a Kindle freebie at the start of the year.
The book is being undersold and under priced. I can understand why. I, too, am somewhat leery about faith based publishers. Not because of the whole religion thing, but more because the first one I read while having a good idea, amounted to Bad People are those who don't go to church and Good People are those who go to church. Such a thing is not my thing. I, however, picke...more

I love historical fiction and I love this time period. I especially love to read the differences from different points of view, be it countries or persons. This was my first of hearing about the Danes and some of the efforts to keep track of their Danish Jews that were removed. Hanne, a Jewish Dane, is a sweet unsuspecting herione. She did not know how strong she could be until pushed. Steffan is a Luntheran pastor, who is content to stay safe and preach in his church. His brother Henning is par...more
Steffen Petersen is a pastor of a Lutheran church in Denmark during WW11 in 1943. He is a conservative pastor with a comfy, if rather dull routine. But after a bicycle accident that sends him to the hospital, he befriends a Jewish nurse named Hanne Abrahasen. He has a brother (Henning)who berates him for being so safe in his life but tells him to stay with the church because that's where he belongs. Henning is a member of the resistance who helps the Jews are are trying to leave the country.

Life in Copenhagen, Denmark was bleak in the early 1940’s. Germany had invaded this peaceful country in order to have access to its deep water seaports and to make it a showcase for German efficiency and civility. The Nazis enforced their will with brutality, intimidation and bribery, not civility. There were those who cooperated (collaborators) with the occupying force, those who sought to undermine it (the resistance), those who sought only to survive and those who were forced, by circumstanc...more

Novelist Robert Elmer just found a new fan. I've always enjoyed reading history (it was my minor in college), and Holocaust history has always been an area of fascination, especially the heroic escapes. For those reasons (not to mention Robert's expert hand at plotting and characterization), I found Wildflowers of Terezin hard to put down and a must-read for anyone interested in Holocaust fiction in the same vein as Tricia Goyer.

I have to admit that I was hesitant to open the newest entry from multi-published Robert Elmer. Not because of the author, who has several adult novels and a non-fiction under his belt, and has already proven his ability to write. My concern was the time and place Wildflowers of Terezin. The suffering of WWII can be too graphic. But I was intrigued by the setting, Denmark. My ignorance never ceases to amaze me and here I found another aspect of it. I found knew nothing of the Danish people durin...more
Steffen Petersen pastors a Lutheran church in 1943 Denmark. He likes safety and predictability and thinks if everyone just lays low and cooperates with the German occupiers, everything will blow over soon.
A bicycle accident lands him in the hospital under the care of Jewish nurse Hanne Abrahamsen who mistakenly thinks he is part of the Danish resistance movement and protects him from the questions of a German officer. Steffen’s brother is a part of the Resistance and comes to take his brother ou...more

I will be honest, I only picked up this novel because it was a free book of the week which meant it fit my budget. However I was amazed at the story which unfolded.
One of the most important things I look for in a book is characters I can get involved with. To my joy, Elmer supplied two such characters within Hanne and Steffen.
Hanne's passion for her people, courage in the face of the war, and her compassion towards her patients all gave the character a depth I appreciated.

ABOUT THE BOOK
When nurse Hanne Abrahamsen impulsively shields Steffen Petersen from a nosy Gestapo agent, she’s convinced the Lutheran pastor is involved in the Danish Underground. Nothing could be further from the truth.
But truth is hard to come by in the fall of 1943, when Copenhagen is placed under Martial Law and Denmark’s Jews—including Hanne—suddenly face deportation to the Nazi prison camp at Terezin, Czechoslovakia. Days darken and danger mounts. Steffen’s faith deepens as he takes great...more
Wildflowers of Terezin by Robert Elmer is a historical fiction book taking place in Denmark during World War II. The book is well researched and an enthralling read.

This love story is set in Copenhagen during World War II. A Lutheran pastor befriends, then falls in love with, a young Jewish nurse. The historical setting is the most interesting aspect of this story. When the Danish people heard that the Nazis were about to round up all the Danish Jews, they arranged to transport as many as possible to Sweden, where the Swedish government had offered sanctuary. The characters in this story are part of the Danish resistance, putting their lives in jeopardy to...more
I thought this was quite a good book of historical fiction. It is well researched and was certainly hard to put down. The writing style is good and the characters are interesting. It is a wonderful tribute to the Danes, who were able to save most of their Jewish fellow citizens during the Holocaust.

I was delighted to see this Holocaust book free on Kindle a while back. It takes place in Denmark, and eventually Terezin Concentration Camp. There is a love story involving a Pastor and a Jewish nurse, that for once, turns out well, romantically!! There was a lot in the book I didn't know about the Danish Resistance, etc., and found it a good read. I have been interested in Terezin ever since years ago I was given a book of paintings and poems by the children of Terezin called, And I Never Saw...more
First Line: "Hanne Abrahamsen awoke with a start in the middle of a bad dream, something about being in nursing school once again and a man who looked like Adolf Hitler (but with the face of a codfish) announcing at her graduation that she was a Jew, and didn't everyone already know that?"
I think my true reaction to this book can be summed up in one syllable: "Hmm." Everything about book was just okay. The characters were fine, the story was somewhat interesting, and I was invested enough to kee...more

This book, Wildflowers of Terezine by Robert Elmer, is a delicate story about brutally harsh conditions concerning the Danish people trying to help the Danish Jews during Work War II. It starts during Nazi occupation when a Lutheran pastor named Steffan crashes his bicycle and ends up in a hospital where he meets a Jewish nurse named Hanne. It tells of Pastor Steffan's battle with his conscience when he determines to aid the Jews. Hanne is caught and sent to Terezine a work/labor camp that is a...more
An outstanding book about Denmark during the Nazi Occupation of WWII. It's the story of a relationship between a Lutheran pastor and a Jewish nurse in a larger setting of a country where you don't know who you can trust and not trust. The pastor steps outside of his comfort zone to do the right thing and becomes involved in the resistance. The nurse gets sent to a work camp in Czechoslovakia, where she continues to do what she knows best, ministering to the sick. Every time I read a WWII story I...more
This was a beautiful story which takes place during Hitler's plan to kill all the Jews he could find. A minister meets a lovely nurse by chance. She recognizes that he may be in danger and helps him avoid the secret police who are planning to capture a large number of Jews in their small town. As they work together to help as many of the town people escape; they are caught up in the dangerous times. Over times, they continue to try to help each other and the town people they encounter. It was di...more
I really enjoyed this book. It's a novel, of course, but based on the true events in Denmark during the WW11 when most of the Danish Jews were smuggled over the water to Sweden. I lived in Denmark for six months during the '60s when these events were much more recent and I remember hearing about it. The main characters are fictional but many of the other participants are drawn from real people and the story of the nurse Hanne and the vicar Steffen is exciting and touching. Apart from some rather...more
Reading this book was an eye opener. Having never experienced anything remotely close to what the holocaust survivors did, this book truly helped me appreciate their experience more.
Steffens as a Danish pastor set in his job at the church. His entire life is however disrupted for good by the arrival of Hanne, the pretty yet self confident nurse, and the German invasion of Denmark. From a complacent observer position, he is challenged by the nazi atrocities to either help out the Danish Jews or a...more

This was one of the first books I read when I got my new Kindle Fire on Mother's Day last year (2012). I downloaded this book from Amazon because it was a "free" book, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, mainly because it was a free book and also because I was a new convert to ebooks. I wasn't disappointed with this book and thoroughly enjoyed it because it was set during World War II which is one period of history that fascinates me. I would recommend this book especially to anyone who is...more
The Holocaust is truly one of the darkest periods in the cumulative history of humankind. I have to confess, after watching Sophie's Choice, I've intentionally stayed away from most dramatizations of those days. To me, they are painful and soul-shredding (even though my pain is nothing compared to what the victims went through). So I approached Wildflowers of Terezin with a bit of trepidation. How would I feel when I was done reading this book? In a word, I was uplifted. Author Robert Elmer pull...more
In some ways, this was a "Number the Stars" for adults. It told the story of the Holocaust primarily through the developing relationship of Lutheran pastor Steffan Petersen and Jewish nurse Hanne Abrahamsen. Even though the romance is allowed to advance throughout the novel, it in no way upstages the realities of the German Occupation of Denmark and the brutal Nazi treatment of Jewish people. Prior to Steffan's meeting Hanne, he had been perfectly comfortable staying in his church delivering the...more
'Wildflowers of Terezin' by Robert Elmer was a great surprise. I say that because it was a free e-book. Now I feel a little bit guilty that I didn't have to buy it! I hope that Robert Elmer writes more adult historical fiction in the future.
Even though this book is fiction, Robert Elmer writes that the places are real and many of the situations like the Danish Underground like using an ambulance to rescue Jewish citizens were real. I picked this book out to read because I love to read about the...more

This is a rather predictable read so far. I have to say, it's not a great book, or good writing, but I'm grateful that it was a book I could finally finish as I've been on a roll with books I couldn't. It is a series of cliches thus far. It reads, and I'm sorry to say, like a harlequin romance set in a concentration camp outside of Prague. It does the whole Holocaust a disservice. I mean really, the heroine of the story is shipped to a concentration camp and has the opportunity to leave as they...more
I was not familiar with this author at all when I chose to read this book, but was very pleasantly surprised by this book. It takes place toward the end of WWII in Denmark. It's the story of how the Danes helped the Danish Jews during this time period. The author has interwoven actual events with fictional characters that tells this story in a wonderful way. While I have read much on WWII I was not familiar with the Danes' story and really loved reading about it.
I'm not sure why I haven't seen this book on more "bestseller" lists. I love Historical Fiction, and this book did not disappoint. I was immediately immersed into the story, and wanted the character's to succeed.
The darker side of this book is the evil crimes the Nazi's commited against the Jewish community, and the extent the went to to hide their crimes from the rest of the world.
I would love to see this book gain more popularity. I highly recommend this book.

This is a very good book about the rounding up of Danish Jews by the Nazi's during WWII. How the Danish people helped to hide the Jews and smuggle them out to Sweden. The story renews your hope that there really ate good people out there ready to risk their lives to save others. According to the author the novel is fiction but based on some true incidents. It is a good love story of a man and woman of different faiths.
I bought this book via an online free Kindle book site and it is wonderful. It is the story of how the Jews were forced to go into hiding and then leave Denmark during WWII. The story follows a Jewish nurse, Hanne, who tries to help many Jews escape, including her mom, to Sweden. So far the story is well written and you get a feel for the desperation of the Jews and the Danes who do not want to support the Nazi's.
