I've to admit it seems rather strange reading fiction by your law professor. They, that is the law and fiction, are two totally different worlds.

Anyway, my reasons for reading this rather unknown novel were; first, as mentioned above, it was written by my law professor. Second, I wanted to read and know about a Korean-American household and life. You won't believe that the only difference between Korean and Desi people is the cuisine. The rest is all the same. Kim's novel is unique; she addresses issues of assimilation, immigration, superstition, and self-esteem. Her writing lacks a subtlety, perhaps with good reason. The topics discussed are not ones to be tiptoed around. I thought her ability to project exactly what it feels like to be the best as well as the second best child without taking from the other is note-worthy. The novel can be a little hard to follow at times. Overall, would recommend.

A short novel, simply written, that explores marital ennui, the pain of immigration, and the trials of teenagedom, and describes a tantalizing amount of Korean food.
