I’ll admit it, when I was fourteen my writing sucked and when I read it over I cringe in embarrassment. And this book produced the same reaction. After reading this book I understand how awesome editors are and damn, did this book need it.

I love me some description, beautiful, lyrical stuff that’ll make you turn green in fits of raging jealousy but shit, man, when they fail, oh boy do they fail. Frick, if I wanted to read paragraphs and paragraphs of technical descriptions about the ...more

When I found out a young author in my state -- near the city in which I live -- had succeeded in writing and publishing a book, I was ecstatic. I wanted to like it, I /really/ wanted to like it. I read it the whole way through, hoping I'd find a redeeming star hidden in the pages... And all I found was a shining example of why so few teenagers get their works published. A dragging plotline (was there a plot?), endless descriptions of what people are wearing (I about died after the fifth time -- ...more

The cover is gorgeous and the story was most interesting. The protagonist as well as the other characters in this story are very original and interesting. It is a long book, and at times you may feel it drag on a little but as you move along you get pulled in.

First let me just say wow. I am in love with this book and with Cayla's beautiful writing. Cayla wrote this book when she was only 14 years old! I know, can you believe it? I am so impressed with the storyline, it kept me at the edge of my seat. I loved the descriptive details which helped me imagine the life of Princess Alera. I enjoyed most of the characters, with the exception of one, Steldor, which was her father's choice for suitor, he was an arrogant son of a gun. I don't want to say a lot...more

I had to read this when I found out the author was 14 years old at the time of writing it. I do not regret my decision. Whereas it is not the best book I have ever read, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the writing style. I liked the clothing and scenery descriptions. Most authors will go on and on about the sky or the trees and yet give very little details as to what the characters are wearing. Cayla did an excellent job.

The story takes place in medieval times in a fictional king...more

Seventeen years ago, a bloody war waged by the Kingdom of Cokyri on the Hytanicans ended abruptly when the Cokyri stole away forty-nine newborn males...and only returned the bodies of forty-eight. Hytanica has managed to rebuild from the war, but the anger felt towards the warriors of the mountains--not to mention anxiety that the war could resume at any time--has never completely ceased.

Data la grande pubblicità, soprattu...more

First, I have to say, all the time I was reading the book, one thought kept going through my mind, “A girl wrote this when she was just 14!” I find that amazing as the story line, characters, and dialogue are well developed and would rival any other book I’ve read. The heroine in only 17 so I’m sure that helped give the author an edge even though the story takes place at a much earlier, medieval time. Her descriptions of people, places, customs, foods, and clothing are very complete.

When I was a kid, I used to love feeling dizzy. I would spin around with my skirt flaring about around me and stop suddenly, disoriented to no end.
I loved that feeling, where even though logic was telling me that the things in front of me were not criss-cross, moving or slanted, my eyes took in the few seconds of unreality where everything seemed ... Unsubstantial.
Thats how this book made me feel. I LOVED it. Cayla Kluver spun an amazing story that reminded me of when I was a kid and l...more

i totally loved this book!!!! it is one of my favourite, along with the next, allegiance.
please note that i didnt read it in english.
Alera i loved most of the characters. i like Alera, despite her betrayal to London, because she is not stupid like the other girls there, she wants to be free and make her own choices. sometimes i wanted to shoot at her ''dont let him treat you like that! say something!'' when she spoke with Steldor, her stupid bodygueard Tandark or her father and...more

First of all I have to admit that I read the Dutch translation of this book. This can be the cause of the bad writing that I had to endure.

I like to write a lot too. Have been writing since I was about 12. And I have to agree with what many before me have already said... This book reads like it's been written by a 14-year-old (which it was). Apparently Kluver had to start her own publishing company, before she could even get her book published and it's no wonder why.

I liked this book but didn't love it. The summary really grabbed my attention, and even though I really liked the storyline, the writing was not as exciting as I hoped it would be and often dragged at many points. Still, I will say I'm impressed to find out the author was just 16 years old when she wrote this.

I like Alera's character in the book. She's a strong character who knows how to speak her mind, but not in an annoying way. At the same time, she does know what her duty is, and e...more

Legacy captured me from the first page and sent me on a total whirlwind of an adventure with intelligent and curious Alera at the head!

High Fantasy is my favorite type of read, you guys know this, and Legacy was absolutely no exception! Ripe with intrigue, well-rounded characters, and court secrets that'll leave you begging for more. Princess Alera is expected to take the throne as queen soon, with cocky and patronizing Steldor as her best suitor. But the balance of their kingdom sta...more

Princess Alera is too young to recall a time when her kingdom had not been at peace, but when a Cokyrian breaches the castle grounds with questionable motives, she gets a quick history lesson about the horrific war 16 years ago that ended with the death of newborns. Princess Alera has one year to make up her mind about who to marry. She doesn't particularly like the egotistic man her father has selected, and she doesn't really know what to do. She gets to know a young, handsome prisoner almost on a whim, but since he hails from her country's principal enemy, she knows any relationship would be forbidden.

Cayla Kluver has crafted a wonderful story with “Legacy”.

“Legacy” tells the story of Princess Alera of Hytanica. Upon her seventeenth birthday, Alera is to find a suitable husband (as she is expected to marry by her eighteenth birthday), one that her father will approve of as King. The problem is that her father insists upon Steldor, Alera does not share her fathers opinion of Steldor. But she isn’t to marry based on affection, she is to marry a suitable King.

This was one of those reads that kept me up way too long to see how the story ends. What I liked about reading this, was at the end, the author left a note at the end about the other book in the series. There was no guess work on if this was a series or not. It looks to be the first in a trilogy.

When I first started reading, I was hooked! I read and read until I consumed the whole book. It did have parts that dragged a bit that I skimmed over, but those were few and far between. I r...more

LEGACY is one of those rare books whose story held my attention despite bland, lackluster writing.

I knew things were going to get interesting pretty early on in the novel, when Princess Alera has her life-long bodyguard, London, dismissed from his post despite her deep affection and trust in him. When London begins to behave suspiciously, Alera questions him. He's not forthcoming in his replies, most likely because Alera is young and female in a kingdom where women have no authority. ...more

This is a book set back in the times that remind me of Arthur and the round table, very historical. This is a tale of Princess Alera. She is the oldest daughter of King Adrick and in line to take of the throne. Better yet, to marry a qualified guy so he can take over the throne because we all know women aren't qualified to do anything of importance. Lol, that time period really irks me because of that. I was definitely born in the right era.

Anyhow, sixteen years before the present p...more

I was hooked on this book from the very beginning and I absolutely canot wait to get my hands on book 2, Allegiance. The introduction lends itself to a classic fairy tale, providing the pertinent background information for the kingdom, creating a believable legend slash curse, and introducing the main characters. After the prologue you get this line:

"I think I'm going to vomit."

Some people strive for greatness and power. Others are born in a position where power is at their fingertips along with duty, even if they like it or not. Alera, the Princess of Hytanica, her father’s heir has difficult choices to make based on what is best for her country. Even if they are the opposite of what her heart wishes to happen.

Caitlin: Legacy is an epic fantasy about a girl learning to become a strong woman. It’s got a huge cast of characters, with developing arcs and motivations. A world with history and politics and intrigues. What’s not to love? I did think the beginning was a little slow, but it’s like a game of chess. Once all the pieces are in place in moves along with alacrity and brutality. Character dynamics were complicated and thought out. I really loved the complicated political intrigue and how the reader...more

What really got me about this book is the great pacing of it. As you read it, everything is given to you little by little so you are not left behind or given too much. You were given just enough to keep you entertain in the book and never bored.

At first I thought thas this book was going to be a fairly typical young adult fantasy romance where the young princess falls in love with the wrong gentleman and struggles against all expectations. On one side, I was right. On the other, there are aspects of this story that do not even come close to being ordinary.

The first half was fairly predictable, princess doesn't want to marry an arrogant lord who is only after her throne and meets a mysterious, dangerous boy who may be ...more
