I’ve admired Jackson as a writer before I even read her novel. And now that I’ve actually read one of her novels, the admiration continues. She’s a genius. Funny, off the wall, talented writer.

I loved Viola. I saw so much of myself in her, it was scary. Remembering how it feels to be absolutely invisible, and not even being able to see yourself clearly. Very real teen characters, dealing with even more realistic situations, you know, despite the whole magical aspect.

As You Wish is a light and...more

**** Read for the first time December 24th - 25th 2009 ****
Reviewed on the first day of Christmas: The year is almost over and, frankly, I did not expect to stumble across another perfect book. I believed my quota was full. Well, what is Christmas for, if not for miracles? As You Wish is my kind of teenage urban fantasy love-story, Jinn is my kind of supernatural hero (I would have wished for him to stay as well, if I were sixteen) and Viola is the best kind of heroine (kind and funny with flaws...more

Viola Cohen wants to feel like she belongs to something bigger, someone special, someplace amazing. Ever since her boyfriend Lawrence broke up with her and announced that he’s a gay, she never feels the same anymore. She’s the Invisible Girl, the kind of girl who has a handful of close friends and many acquaintances, but doesn’t belong to anything. And now, she’s just sad all the time.

He’s a genie who comes to grant Viola’s wish. He’s good in genie standard: never breaks out rules, never gets to...more

With well-developed characters and a unique, seamlessly-written plot, Pearce lends weight to what could be, in less deft hands, a chick-lit cliche. Instead, As You Wish is a quick, enchanting read with unexpected depth and subtle but important messages about identity, self-respect, and what it means to really belong. A fantastic book for avid and reluctant readers alike!

Wow! It just seems that in the short of a few days I’ve uncovered a lost treasure trove of books. As You Wish was sweet but with a touch of sadness.

Viola goes through a breakup with a best friend since childhood because, you guessed it, he’s gay! It seems that all the good man are always gay, taken, or, you know, “mythical”. She goes through a change that leaves her sad, but just lonely. She can’t find her place where she belongs, giving herself the nickname Invisible Girl. Sure everyone’s nice...more

TThe story was captivating and completely original. The writing was humorous in some areas and deep in others. It's on of the most perfect "light" reads ever! I wanted to read it again once I finished. I recommend this book for anyone.

I just...what the FUCK were they thinking when they designed the cover?

It seems to go from bad to worse in its progression from ARC to real book, frankly.

When Viola's best friend and boyfriend came out to her and they broke up, she felt like she would never be whole again. All she wished for was to stop being Invisible Girl and find the group where she fit in. But when a genie arrives to grant her three wishes, Viola can't decide what will make her happy. And the longer she puts off wishing, the more she grows to like Jinn. But she has to wish eventually and when she does, Jinn will leave her world forever.

I was really afraid that my expectations...more

Okay, so you may think the synopsis looks ridiculous. You may be right. But the delivery was surprisingly well-done. I mean, don't get me wrong, this isn't a deep, insightful read with a progressive build-up of the main protagonists' relationship. But the narrator was relatable and actually learned from her mistakes, and I liked her relationship with Jinn. It was all super cute and adorable, if a bit rushed (but like I said, the tone is deliberately light so depth is not what you're looking for...more

I'm putting this on my to-read list solely on the basis of Jackson Pearce's AmazonFail: The Video, which is priceless.

15/8 - hurrah - it's shipping from Betterworld already!

I read Jackson Pearce's AS YOU WISH back to back with Malinda Lo's ASH, and I'm going to write more about what an interesting experience that was when we review the books at length next week on the Beautiful Creatures site.

Quickly, though, it's amazing how smart and how different and how completely excellent two talented twists on loosely the same genre can be. More on that to come.

Jackson Pearce is a lightning-fast genius, funny, slick, who puts very real teen characters in the midst of a rol...more

I absolutely loved this book. I loved Jinn, Viola, but really just loved the whole book. This reminded me so much of first love, and how it makes you feel like you can beat all of the odds. Beautiful story from beginning to end, heart-wrenching in some, and so unputdownable!

"“Todo lo que he aprendido hoy en la clase sobre Shakespeare es que a veces tienes que enamorarte de la persona equivocada para encontrar a la correcta. Una lección más útil hubiera sido que a veces la persona adecuada no te corresponde. O que a veces la persona adecuada es gay. O que a veces tú mismo no eres la persona adecuada.” Viola está destrozada desde que Lawrence, su novio y mejor amigo de la infancia, le dijo que tenía que cortar con ella porque es gay. Ella sigue enamorada de él y, aun...more

Dazu soll Viola am besten sofort drei Wünsche äußern, Viola möc...more

Oh my goodness. I was actually very excited to read this. At first, the cover put me off a little. But when I read what it was about, I promptly put it on hold at the library. I then finished it in one day while I was at my grandparents’. The only thing bad about my decision for reading it so fast was that I had absolutely nothing to read while in the car on my way home.

Viola feels invisible. Her parents don't seem to care much about...more

As You Wish is a fantastic debut novel by Jackson Pearce. The book has a great plot and is very well written. This book has great description, word choice, etc. With so many young adult books with a fantasy element to them, it can be hard for one to stand out. As You Wish stands out. The author's take on wishes and genies is great and is presented in a creative way that one has not seen before.

The book goes back and forth between Viola's point of view and Jinn (the genie's) point of view. Pearce...more

Besonders begeistert ist dr davon allerdings n...more

Hmmm...What do I think about this book????

I think it was a great concept. Truly. I love Aladdin (still!), and Genie is the best. Okay, so this isn't as funny and Jinn isn't voiced by Robin Williams. Nonetheless, it was really cool to see another portrayal of genies and wish-granting. I certainly couldn't tell you what I would wish for if I had the chance. And the world of Calliban was pretty great concept too; and I liked seeing how Jinn starts to appreciate it differently as the story progresse...more

This book steered relatively clear of cliched topics (aside from the small things here and there, but I suppose that they can be overlooked) with Viola’s life, as most other teenagers are, talking about how invisible they were and how she really, really wanted a boyfriend to belong again with the crowd. I rolled my eyes.

This is exactly the sort of teen troubles that constantly seem to dominate our lives when all we need to do is to say, okay. I’m going to get over it. I think this story was the...more

This is my first Jackson Pearce book that I have read. It had been on my bookshelf a little while now and because it was a genie related book I knew I had to read it sooner or later because I love genies. The story revolves around a girl named Viola who happens to be a very broken, slightly lonely girl. Whos bestfriend happens to be her ex-boyfriend who told her just six months ago that he was gay and this happens to be the reason to why she is so alone. She happens to really want to fit in agai...more

Cheesy in some parts; unbelievable in most parts; a little cutesy too, but not great. Not much to say about the characters except Viola annoyed the hell out of me with her "I'm invisible" crap. I wanted to yell "get over yourself and move on!" but remembered I was reading a book and that I shouldn't take it so seriously. Jinn was okay in that I can understand how he grew to care for Viola, but I don't think he should have. Yes, he saw the Viola she was, not the Viola she felt she was, but I don'...more

I am very disappointed with this book. First let me say that I love Jackson Pearce as a person. I watch her YouTube videos all the time and I think she's hilarious. I've always meant to read her books ever since I've heard of her. Unfortunately, this book doesn't do it for me. It's like every other YA novel out there... except with genies. The story was mediocre and I didn't really care for the characters. Especially Viola. Oh my God, was she annoying! She did nothing but complained about how lo...more

After reading Jackson's other two books, I knew I had to read her first book. At first, it looked a little ho-hum, nothing to make it stand out from another YA book with magic in it. Jackson Pearce being Jackson Pearce, I opened it anyway.
It was completely different than I had expected and rang very true to real life.
If I was given three wishes, I'd immediately think to wish for something like a jar of nutella, or maybe a brand new book. After I'd gotten over the initial shock of a bored (althou...more

Pearce's debut is an extremely cute and compelling read. I read this in three days (was also reading two other books at the same time) and loved every minute of it. It's a fresh take on the paranormal genre, dealing with a genie rather than vampires, werewolves, or fae. What I also really liked was how Pearce did the chapters- going back and forth between Viola and Jinn's perspectives. It was great seeing them through each other's eyes and how they both fell in love with each other. The characte...more

Having previously read 'sisters red', I thought I would try some of Jackson Pearce's other books, and got this one for Christmas.

As you wish tells the story of a girl named Viola, who feels invisible and lonely ever since her boyfriend came out to her as gay and ended the relationship 7 months prior.... she is sat in class and wishes so hard that she ends up being assigned her very own genie, who she names 'jinn' the rest of what follows is the breaking of all the rules as viola discovers how t...more

As you Wish---was fun, bubbly and cute. When I think of Jackson Pearce, I think Disney. It had a Disney movie feel (and not just because it had a genie in it)--it had a sweet, romantic, fairytale quality about it. My favorite part was how it was written from a dual narrative. So, the reader gets to really know both Viola and Jinn. I loved this story and the characters...although, it was kind of juvenile. Not only would I recommended to Young Adult readers but also middle school readers.

“All I've learned in today's Shakespeare class is: Sometimes you have to fall in love with the wrong person just so you can find the right person. A more useful lesson would've been: Sometimes the right person doesn't love you back. Or sometimes the right person is gay. Or sometimes you just aren't the right person.
Thanks for nothing, Shakespeare.”

“I think we’re always looking for new pieces,” Viola says quietly.

What?

She continues, “I was looking for Lawrence, then for something to replace Lawrence, then for Aaron… maybe that’s the real truth about being broken. We’re always whole, we’re just looking to add on to ourselves, to be more whole. And then when a piece leaves, it’s broken away. But we aren’t left any less whole than we were to begin with…”

“But feeling broken—” I begin, the words tight in my throat. I’m grateful that Viola cuts me off.

“Is horrible. Painful,” she finishes. “But then, when you aren’t expecting it, new pieces appear and suddenly…they’re attached.” Her eyes rise to meet mine. “And you end up more whole than you were before.”
