I’ve admired Jackson as a writer before I even read her novel. And now that I’ve actually read one of her novels, the admiration continues. She’s a genius. Funny, off the wall, talented writer.

I loved Viola. I saw so much of myself in her, it was scary. Remembering how it feels to be absolutely invisible, and not even being able to see yourself clearly. Very real teen characters, dealing with even more realistic situations, you know, despite the whole magical aspect.

With well-developed characters and a unique, seamlessly-written plot, Pearce lends weight to what could be, in less deft hands, a chick-lit cliche. Instead, As You Wish is a quick, enchanting read with unexpected depth and subtle but important messages about identity, self-respect, and what it means to really belong. A fantastic book for avid and reluctant readers alike!

Wow! It just seems that in the short of a few days I’ve uncovered a lost treasure trove of books. As You Wish was sweet but with a touch of sadness.

Viola goes through a breakup with a best friend since childhood because, you guessed it, he’s gay! It seems that all the good man are always gay, taken, or, you know, “mythical”. She goes through a change that leaves her sad, but just lonely. She can’t find her place where she belongs, giving herself the nickname Invisible Girl. Sure eve...more

TThe story was captivating and completely original. The writing was humorous in some areas and deep in others. It's on of the most perfect "light" reads ever! I wanted to read it again once I finished. I recommend this book for anyone.

I just...what the FUCK were they thinking when they designed the cover?

It seems to go from bad to worse in its progression from ARC to real book, frankly.

When Viola's best friend and boyfriend came out to her and they broke up, she felt like she would never be whole again. All she wished for was to stop being Invisible Girl and find the group where she fit in. But when a genie arrives to grant her three wishes, Viola can't decide what will make her happy. And the longer she puts off wishing, the more she grows to like Jinn. But she has to wish eventually and when she does, Jinn will leave her world forever.

I was really afraid that my ...more

I'm putting this on my to-read list solely on the basis of Jackson Pearce's AmazonFail: The Video, which is priceless.

15/8 - hurrah - it's shipping from Betterworld already!

I read Jackson Pearce's AS YOU WISH back to back with Malinda Lo's ASH, and I'm going to write more about what an interesting experience that was when we review the books at length next week on the Beautiful Creatures site.

Quickly, though, it's amazing how smart and how different and how completely excellent two talented twists on loosely the same genre can be. More on that to come.

Jackson Pearce is a lightning-fast genius, funny, slick, who puts very real teen ch...more

I absolutely loved this book. I loved Jinn, Viola, but really just loved the whole book. This reminded me so much of first love, and how it makes you feel like you can beat all of the odds. Beautiful story from beginning to end, heart-wrenching in some, and so unputdownable!

"“Todo lo que he aprendido hoy en la clase sobre Shakespeare es que a veces tienes que enamorarte de la persona equivocada para encontrar a la correcta. Una lección más útil hubiera sido que a veces la persona adecuada no te corresponde. O que a veces la persona adecuada es gay. O que a veces tú mismo no eres la persona adecuada.” Viola está destrozada desde que Lawrence, su novio y mejor amigo de la infancia, le dijo que tenía que cortar con ella porque es gay. After reading Jackson's other two books, I knew I had to read her first book. At first, it looked a little ho-hum, nothing to make it stand out from another YA book with magic in it. Jackson Pearce being Jackson Pearce, I opened it anyway.
It was completely different than I had expected and rang very true to real life.
If I was given three wishes, I'd immediately think to wish for something like a jar of nutella, or maybe a brand new book. After I'd gotten over the initial shock of a b...more

Pearce's debut is an extremely cute and compelling read. I read this in three days (was also reading two other books at the same time) and loved every minute of it. It's a fresh take on the paranormal genre, dealing with a genie rather than vampires, werewolves, or fae. What I also really liked was how Pearce did the chapters- going back and forth between Viola and Jinn's perspectives. It was great seeing them through each other's eyes and how they both fell in love with each other. The characte...more

Having previously read 'sisters red', I thought I would try some of Jackson Pearce's other books, and got this one for Christmas.

As you wish tells the story of a girl named Viola, who feels invisible and lonely ever since her boyfriend came out to her as gay and ended the relationship 7 months prior.... she is sat in class and wishes so hard that she ends up being assigned her very own genie, who she names 'jinn' the rest of what follows is the breaking of all the rules as viola disco...more

As you Wish---was fun, bubbly and cute. When I think of Jackson Pearce, I think Disney. It had a Disney movie feel (and not just because it had a genie in it)--it had a sweet, romantic, fairytale quality about it. My favorite part was how it was written from a dual narrative. So, the reader gets to really know both Viola and Jinn. I loved this story and the characters...although, it was kind of juvenile. Not only would I recommended to Young Adult readers but also middle school readers.

Viola is very normal, she fades into the background, in fact she is practically invisable. One day, she feels her invisabilty more than normal, wishing people would notice her desperately. The wish is so strong, that it summons a Jinn, to you and me he's a genie. He grants her three wishes, and then he has to leave forever.

After watching Jackson Pearce's youtube videos for quite a while, i decided it was time to pick up one of her books and read. I can, quite frankly, say that i wasn...more

Wow. As You Wish is unbelievably good. The book is one roller-coaster ride-I just could not put it down!It made me stay awake till late at night, actually till dawn. The plot of the book is simple and uni-dimensional.There were no digressions and thank god for that! The plot is structured around the relationship and the development of the relationship between Viola and Jinn.Viola, the female protagonist was in utter distress after her break-up with Lawrence, and Jinn, the wish-granter, arrives to save...more

Such a cute book :)
All Viola wants is to belong. Ever since her best friend/ex-boyfriend Lawrence came out to her, she's felt as though she's living on the outside of everyone else. Co-existing, but never truly belonging anywhere or with anyone.
One strong wish later, the mysterious - and invisible - Jinn is following her around school and appearing in her bedroom; ready to grant her 3 wishes.
All Jinn wants is to grant the wishes and get back home to his land of Caliban. He ...more

I love “love”. And back when I was a kid, that love was best expressed to me through cartoon feel-good movies, usually created by the Disney corporation. Aladdin happened to be one of those movies and it’s still one of my favorites. What drew me to this book was the play on the genie/master relationship. Instead of using the genie to get the person they love (I’m looking at you, Aladdin), Jackson Pearce switched it up and had the person love the genie.

Jinn is an interesting character...more

Surprisingly feel-good book, even though definitely not a serious read (but it's not pretending to be one). Simple story, nice characters, uncomplicated plot.
Still, I read it while on vacation, in a house where there was nothing else to do and really found myself enjoying the simple humor and cheerful narration.
There is a lot in this book that teenage character will identify with: the urge to belong, desire to be loved. The mistakes that main protagonist makes are predictable, bu...more

Viola is an easily likable character, but without all that much personality. She was sweet and cute and I felt bad for her, with her ex having declared himself gay while they were going out. She just wasn't all that different from every other teen character out there and kind of faded to the background, even as the main character. That being said, I loved Jinn. Okay, at first he was annoying and snobbish, but after a couple of days of tagging along with Viola, impatiently waiting for her to wish...more

This was one of the books I picked up because Katie recommended it :p And I LOVED IT! I mean, it goes to show that you don't need some complicated mythology/fantasy story that spans a few books in order to write something good. This book is awfully simple, down-to-earth, with just enough sprinkles of magic to make it interesting, and in just one book, it has managed to make me care for all the characters.

All of them has depth (with the exception of poor Aaron but I think that's just c...more

I was one of those kids who believed in wishing on stars. My earliest memory of making a wish was when my brother told me about the North Star, and I wished that I'd dream about Cinderella that night (I was pretty young then). Years later, my friends and I would wait for the first star to appear so we could make a wish before going home, but as time went by, I found it harder and harder to make a simple wish. I'd end up using my wishes (even birthday wishes) for...more

Viola spends her days wishing to belong. It seems as if everyone else in high school has a place except her, and these feelings have only gotten worse since she and her boyfriend, Lawrence, broke up due to the fact that he is actually gay. Sitting in class, wishing again, she manages to somehow summon a jinn, or genie. She now has three wishes.

Afraid that she will wish for the wrong thing, or something that won’t actually make her happy, Viola contemplates her choices. The jinn, who ...more

“All I've learned in today's Shakespeare class is: Sometimes you have to fall in love with the
wrong person just so you can find the right person. A
more useful lesson would've been: Sometimes the right person doesn't love you back. Or sometimes
the right person is gay. Or sometimes you just aren't
the right person.
Thanks for nothing, Shakespeare.”

“Keanu Reeves?" she asks in amazement. I nod. "What did he wish for?" "Isn't it obvious?" I say, waving a hand at the screen. "Fame." "That's why he's famous? Because of a wish?" "Have you seen his movies? Surely you didn't think he made it on his acting skills?" I grant wishes; I don't work miracles. Viola looks back at the screen, eyes screwed up in awe. "I guess that makes sense," she says faintly as my former master delivers a line poorly. "Wow.” 25 people liked it
