Nick’s adventures continue. The Nazis have invaded France, Poland, Belgium, and Holland. England has declared war on Germany. Winston Churchill is the new Prime Minister of England. America has promised aid to England. And the first of four tiny Channel Islands has fallen to the Nazi invasion. Will Nick’s island be next? Not if he can help it!

Awesome adventure! It's been too long to remember acurately, but I think I liked it as well as the first. This guy is the modern model for the blood and morality tale genre of years gone by. It is very obvious that he grew up and was nourished on Haggard, Forester, Marryat, and others.
These books are set on a tiny island near Guernsey and Jersey, Great Britian at the beginning of the German invasion during WWII. The hero is a very enterprising and brave 12 yo boy.

The Time Pirate by Ted Bell
In the tradition of Tom Swift and The Hardy Boys this book is a rollicking good time for the young reader and those of us young in heart. Nick McIver is a young man with a time machine. In this adventure he faces historic events in American history, pirates and Nazis.
Ted Bell does an excellent job of recreating the feel of the grand adventures I read as a boy. Nick McIver is pure of heart and free of malice. He attacks life with gusto and with the characteristic disre...more

I enjoyed The Time Pirate alot. It's fun to experience Nick McIver growing in confidence as the story builds. He is no longer unsure of being the hero - like he was in Nick of Time. I liked the whole plot development around the Nazis invasion of the Islands - and the introduction of the female spy. That has great potential in future stories. The whole episode where Nick bombs the Nazi airfield is masterful - you feel you are in that plane with young Nick. If I have one complaint...more

I'm not actually sure why I read this book. I had read Nick Of Time (actually, listened to it via audiobook) and I was surprised that, for a time travel story, there was so much buildup in the "now" (Nick McIver's time, the years building up to World War II) before any time traveling at all happened. This sequel is no different: roughly half of the book takes place in 1940, and the rest takes place (view spoiler)...more
How exciting could life possibly be with no cell phones, computers or video games? Very! While I wasn't head-over-heels crazy about the first book of this series, Nick of Time, Book 2 is a different story (pun intended). Less nautical jargon, same vintage feel and a much better story!
Other than the prologue (which, to me, does nothing except make the book fourteen pages longer), everything about The Time Pirate is fun. The main characters we met in Book 1 are all here again, but Nick is much mo...more

This is a great adventure book for kids and their parents who are not too old to still enjoy a rollicking yarn filled with pirates, George Washington and the American revolution, Sopwith Camels, and spying against the Nazis in World War II. How exactly, I'm sure you are asking, can you fit all that into one book. Well it helps if you have a working model of Leonardo da Vinci's, Tempus Machina, a time machine. Nick McIver, our twelve year old hero, is game to try anything. He probably gets this t...more
Nick and his sister are back for more time-traveling adventures. The invasion of the Channel Islands has begun in earnest, and the British government has decided to let them go rather than fight the Germans for them. Nick and some of the other island resdents are not inclined to surrender however, leading Nick to refit his father's Sopwith Camel for daring and dangerous raids. As if that weren't enough, pirate Billy Blood is still trying to obtain Nick's golden time-travel orb by any means, incl...more
This book is very suspenseful. It's about Nick (the main character) flying his dad's old war plane and attacking the Germans during the night. His friend Gunner is a whiz at making, building and remodeling planes and other war vehicles. He has to fend of the Germans so their town does not be a new P.O.W camp or a place for the Germans to make or keep their ships. Nick decides to go on a bombing run and bomb the ammunition building. Gunner builds the bombs and Nick is off on a suicide mission. On...more
This is the second book in Ted Bell's Nick McIver series. Once again, Nick and friends must deal with the Nazi menace in 1940 while also fighting their great foe from the 18th century. the pirate captain William Blood. This time Nick learns how to fly a plane, saves his sister with help of his friend Gunner, and outwits Blood in the pirate's attempt to attack a French fleet on the way to help George Washington's Revolutionary Army defeat Cornwallis' English troops.

Pirates, planes, and plans oh my! I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this as much as the first, but I can't remember all of the first book to judge for sure. This had all the excitement and adventure of the first book however, my only gripe about it is why does Katie always get kidnapped?(sorry about the mini spoiler) Anyways I also wasn't a huge fan of when he went back in time to...I shouldn't say or I'l spoil the book for you. So all the characters were nice, the plot was pretty good, and the setting...more
I enjoyed the time travel and Nick's adventures, but the book required a lot of suspension of belief. I was a little surprised that so many people were okay with allowing a 12-year-old to drop bombs on enemies, but I was even more shocked by Nick's reaction. "He opened up with his twin Vickers and was pleased to see the deadly effect of his machine guns as German soldiers either dove for safety or fell mortally wounded or dead." Now I've never personally been in war, but I don't understand that...more
I read this aloud with Amber (10), and she and I have entirely different opinions of it, and, David, who listened in on most of it, pretty much agrees with her, which makes me think that I just wasn't the right audience.
It's 1940, Nick McIver, a 12 year-old boy must defend his home, a small British island, against the looming Nazi invasion. But the Nazis are not his only enemies; using a time-travel device invented by da Vinci, he also battles 18th-century pirates who've kidnapped his sister. To...more

It's 1940, and the British are preparing for a Nazi invasion of England. As a resident of Greybeard Island, the smallest island of the British Channel Islands, Nick must help to save his homeland.
The Nazis aren't Nick's only enemies, though. When Nick's sister, Kate, is kidnapped by his arch-rival, Captain Blood, and taken back to Port Royal, Jamaica, in the year 1781, Nick must use his time machine to go back in time to save her.
While in Jamaica, however,...more

The Time Pirate is the follow up to Nick of Time, which we reviewed here on the blog recently. Nick of Time was great and The Time Pirate is even better. Ted Bell never loses his pacing, keeping the story constantly moving along. We get to meet even more wonderful characters (I never knew Martha Washington could be so charming) and venture over to America in this tale.

I am not sure entirely why I had such a hard time with this one! It had the makings of an awesome adventure mixed with some good historical fiction. I think I just didn't care much for the characters (and I hadn't read the first book, so that might have been part of it). I also got a bit bogged down by all the technical airplane stuff too. I think tween boys who are strong readers or huge fans of WWI era aircraft might really love this. Hopefully I'll come back to this one sometime.
This is a continuation of the story of Nick McIver, time traveler extraordinaire. This time, he has gone from sailing to including ace flying in his heroic adventures. Capt. Blood is back, and Nick must save his sister when she is kidnapped. then he must save George Washington and his troops from Capt. Blood's nefarious schemes. There is some mild language, but the story continues to be action-packed and a lot of fun, as it weaves through world and American history.
I love the opening chapter to remind readers about events of past books but I couldn't get past a 12 year old boy learning to fly this old plane and then taking out a bunch of nazis and then ditching it in the ocean without dying. I can believe he is smart enough to come up with a plan to out wit the pirate and time travel but not that. Also, what is wrong with the dad? He had to know what the kids was going to do but did NOTHING to caution the kid and all the other adults encourage his life thr...more
If he were a tad younger, I think I'd have a serious crush on Ted Bell. His ability to write a clever, exciting adventure story is magical. Knowing that the Guernsey islands eventually become occupied by Nazis (in real life), I was riveted, wondering what would happen to Nick McIver and his family. Tie pirates in, and the Revolutionary War? Genius. I heartily recommend this book.
This sequel to Nick of Time starts right where the other book left off. Nick McGyver is in possession of a Tempus Machina designed by Leonardo DaVinchi, which allows him to travel through time. The wicked pirate, Billy Blood reprises as the villain in this book, which is set both in the WWII Nazi-occupied Channel Islands and Revolutionary War era. Lots of adventure; some bad language, though, makes it inappropriate for younger readers.
I could tell that it had been written for a young audience, and I found an alarming amount of illogical situations that the younger audience would not have realized. I was a good book otherwise, fast paced and filled you with the warm feeling of a Disney-like ending. It was a pretty good way to spend a weekend.
A rousing and fun adventure that anyone, especially young boys should enjoy! I especially enjoy the historical parts that Nick McIver manages to get involved in! What 12-year-old boy wouldn't enjoy flying a Sopwith Camel, sailing on 18th century vessels, and being there for a decisive battle in history!
audiobook. Kind of like Dan Brown's "DaVinci code" for the younger set: lots of urgent action, but if you think about it too closely the story doesn't quite hang together. Boys will love it, w/ dastardly pirates, a heroic 12-yr-old, an aerial battle against the Nazis, clever plans, time travel and George Washington, too.
This was such an enjoyable read! The main character, Nick, reminded me of Tom Sawyer, likeable, intelligent, caring, courageous, and adventurous. He began by doing a good deed for one of the most important people in his life, and ends up helping so many people through some of the hard times that the German occupation brings to the Channel Islands.

I loved Ted Bell's first book for younger readers, Nick of Time. It was a good old-fashioned adventure story that would appeal to boys especially but many girls would find it exciting as well. I loved the Hardy Boys when I was young and this reminds me of that type of book.
