They all walk toward the Abyss for different reasons, each of them with varying persuasions. Along the way they meet Evangelist, and as a result they face the Great Persuasion.

Some of their conversations are recorded in this book.

Although I tend to be wary of books which are about theology but which are in the form of a coversation between two or more people (I find this style lends itself to leading and to ignoring problems which would have to be addressed in a treatise), I really, really liked this book. The story is of an evangelist who stations himself on the road between the City and the Abyss and addresses himself to the unbelievers who travel down the road. The book is full of quick-witted, precise answers to many...more

Persuasions is an interesting glimpse into clear thinking, practical theology, and unapologetic conviction. Doug Wilson organizes his short book into fourteen chapters, each dealing with a different traveler and their conversation with Evangelist. The story form and dialogue make it an easy read, while getting a taste of the arguments of atheists, agnostics, feminists, and others. Wilson shows that life apart from God’s Word must borrow reasoning from that Word and ultimately undermine itself.

Wonderful!

I love the story being so packed full of examples of reason gone awry and the logical answers given to unwitting, unbelieving, and skeptical travelers while on the road of life... or death, as the case may be.

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. - Proverbs 13:14

27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death. - Proverbs 14:27

In a sort of Pilgrim's Progress style Wilson gives the reader a number of different apologetical encounters between a Christian and different worldvie bearers throughout the book. At times the conversation seem too manufactured but it is otherwise a good read espescially for someone who is fresh in the study of apologetics.

Great format—a quick and easy read that works to equip the saint with answers to some of the more popular issues and defenses taken up against Christianity. A good reminder that it is every believers responsibility to do the work of an evangelist.

Read this when I didn't understand much about countering either hypocrisy or unbelief. So...back on my "to read" shelf it goes.

Another classic Wilson in the style of Easy Chairs, Hard Words.

Hated it and never finished it.

Two destinations. The City above or The Abyss below. This book gives us handles on how to give a reason for the hope that we have in Christ. I really resonated with the characters and conversations as I have met them myself many a time. I found this book helpful in developing a copiousness amidst an evangelical land of lame persuasions. The author has an ability to make the "unbeliever" stop and consider the danger of their direction as well as communicating the beauty of the other.

This is a good book with several short sketches of an evangelist interacting with those walking the road toward the abyss, while he himself walks to the City of God. Each sketch provides insight into different objections raised by unbelievers with a response by the evangelist that exposes the fallacies of thought and challenges them to think anew about God.

This is a useful book for apologetics--one I recommend.

My 14 yo daughter thought this was so wonderful that she begged me to read it.
Written in the mode of Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. It is an easy, thought filled and provoking read.
James
I enjoyed the book and it's Bunyanesque (is that a word =P ) feel

I liked how the converstaions went back and forth, and how Evangelist persuaded them. He also talked it over with them so they knew what they were doing wrong.

Fun little book. Some witty retorts to various worldviews and objections to Christianity, but not much heavy duty ammunition. You can easily read this in an hour or so.

Interesting. I still don't buy presuppositionalism. Can't get off darned St. Thomas. He's just too awesome to get rid of.
Brett
Fun and easy to read.

I write in order to make the little voices in my head go away. Thus far it hasn't worked.
