5+ stars – Contemporary Romance
This is the first novel I have read by Lisa Kleypas, and I mainly read it in order to have the necessary background to read “Blue-Eyed Devil” and “Smooth Talking Stranger”, both of which had sparked my interest. I honestly didn’t have very high expectations of “Sugar Daddy” based on the mediocre book jacket description, after reading some of the mixed reviews referring to it as chick-lit rather than romance, and that it’s written sole...more

I approached this book with much trepedition. Lisa Kleypas is my favorite historical romance author, so I wasn't thrilled about her recent move to contemporaries. (Very few authors can actually pull this off.) And then there is the fact that this book is written in first person. (Not a fan!) The blurb on the back of the book does not do it justice either.
Frankly, I thought I would be forcing myself to plow through a Danielle Steel-esque type of soap opera.

What an utter disappointment this book was. I was tempted to give this two stars but then I changed my mind to three stars because it’s more like 2.5 seeing as it is generally well-written, but in no way is this a romance in my book. I’ve read mixed reviews from some saying it’s romance and others it’s women’s fiction. It’s 100% chick-lit which I dislike. I don’t care about the main character’s “journey” through hardship and angst, I want to see the romance, the emotiona...more

Sugar Daddy is about Liberty Jones. Liberty's father died while she was very young in an oil accident. He was Mexican while her mother is blond and fair. Liberty inherited her father's coloring though and feels like her family isn't enough with only her and her mom. They move to a trailer park in Welcome, TX and that's where she meets Hardy. Hardy is pure trouble, but from the moment they met Liberty is in head over heels. They are a few years apart however and Hardy plans on leaving Welcome. He...more

Any CR fan
This was my first Kleypas book, so I went in without any expectations. I have ready many reviews that state this book stinks because it's not like her historicals. I liked it very much.
I loved the Texas references in this story. I'm almost jealous that I am not from such a cool state! LOL. There are almost inside jokes about how the wealth’s statuses are different from Dallas vs. say...Houston or Austin. They all seem to look down on the other. Also, the hero's hair was twice r...more

Those who enjoy Southern contemporary romance
This is NOT your mother's Lisa Kleypas (I've always wanted to say something like that!). What a departure! But, I truly enjoyed it. The lady has talent, and she used it in a different genre to produce dialogue and circumstances in a contemporary setting that tugged at my heart. Almost fairy-tale like, we meet the heroine, a poor girl who grew up in a trailer park in Texas after her father died. Most of the book takes place when the girl is a teen, and I found the details to be believable. W...more

You know that expression about good singers: "You could sing the phonebook"? Borrowing that expression, Lisa Kleypas could write advertisements for the yellow pages that would leave me enthralled! She has such a gift of taking an average sounding story and turning into something compelling and full of romantic energy. I love her writing!

I was really apprehensive about this book. Which is why I borrowed it from the library, instead of buying it. I LOVE and ADORE Lisa's historical books, and I am now ashamed to say that I didn't think she could pull off a contemporary. But I was oh so blessedly wrong. This book..I'm at a loss for words. It will make you laugh and make you cry, and I never easily cry from a book. It makes me want to write her and thank her and apologize for ever doubting her abilities. She is a PHENOMENAL writer...more

OMG. Seriously, there are no words to describe how I feel about Lisa Kleypas's books. How is it that every book I read of hers ends up being even better. Her books are so good that once I start with them I can't stop.
But after starting with this series I have to admit that I would like to say several things.
This has automatically become my fave series. I mean, the wallflowers was amazing but this book... Damn... there is anything I can say that will actually describe how...more

When awkward teenager Liberty Jones meets self-assured, loner Hardy Cates her life is changed forever. Liberty and her mother have just moved to a trailer home in Welcome, Texas. Hardy lives in the same trailer park with his mother and three siblings. Both the Cates the Jones families don't have much in the way of money, but their ties to their family make their lives complete. Liberty's mother works hard to support her daughter on her own, and when she becomes pregnant, Liberty steps in to help...more

I totally loved this book in a big way. Not super crazy about the title or the blurb, which I don’t think does justice to what a great story this is - but it’s hard to encapsulate a book that takes you over a young girl’s lifetime and into her adulthood.
We meet Liberty when she’s 14 and has moved to a trailerpark with her mother and her mother’s latest loser boyfriend. The loser boyfriend isn’t trying to touch her in bad places and he doesn’t hit her mother so that’s...more

Because I am a Lisa Kleypas fan, I gave this book 3 stars as it was just okay for me. I am a huge fan of Kleypas’ historical romances and was somewhat disappointed in this contemporary story. It read like the life story of Liberty Jones as opposed to a contemporary romance. I did love Liberty and really felt for her through her hardships, but felt a lot of the things that happened in the first half of the book, could have been shorter. Based on the blurb at the back of the book I expected a lo...more

How embarassing! I'm adding a "contemporary romance" to my list! So there's a legitimate reason I read a "romance." At the women's show, I'd snuck off to what I thought was a secluded little area to feed my daughter ... then people started to line up. There was a free book giveaway with an author signing. So I got in line. C'mon ... it was a FREE BOOK!!!
After the last few books I read, I needed something fluffy, so I gave this a go. I have to say that it was less ...more

Liberty Jones has dreams and determination that will take her far away from Welcome, Texas---if she can keep her wild heart from ruling her mind. Hardy Cates sees Liberty as completely off-limits. His own ambitions are bigger than Welcome, and Liberty Jones is a complication he doesn’t need. But something magical and potent draws them to each other, in a dangerous attraction that is stronger than both of them.

Usually when a book is termed a "romance novel" you know the plot pretty much from the first--boy meets girl, attraction, conflict, resolution (love). Sugar Daddy has those elements, but it is more than that--it is more the story of the teen and young adult years of Liberty, a girl who lost her father when she was four. After that, her mother moved from relationship to relationship and from low-wage job to low-wage job. When Liberty is in high school, they move to a trailer in Welcome ...more

This was Lisa Kleypas first contemporary novel and based on how much I loved it, I hope she will continue with even more along with historicals. Every bit of this story was so detailed and well drawn, the characters, the setting and the culture. I could clearly see the story as if it had been real. The events and emotions through Liberty’s life make you truly wish her the best and celebrate along with her as she reaches beyond her beginnings.

The first of the series and I really liked getting a sneak peak at the Travis family. Again, anything from Lisa has sexual content. I have to admit, I had my husband read a couple of pages and it paid off :) Not a book I would recommend to everyone.

To say that I love this book would be an understatement. I don’t know the right words to choose to express how much I love this book. It blew me away from the beginning until the end. I started reading it before going to bed and once I started it, I knew I had to finish it before I went to sleep. And I did! By the time I woke up in the morning, the first thing I did was grab the book from the bedside table and relived every scene and dialogue that I loved so much.
