The Marquis of Chase is not a reputable man.

He is notorious for his wretched morals and is never received in respectable houses. The ladies of the ton would never allow him in their drawing rooms . . . though some of them have welcomed him into their bedchambers. Ejected from his father’s house at the age of sixteen, he now lives a life of wanton pleasure. So what could th...more

I have to say right up front that this was a fun book. MN is a NTM author and this will not be the last. Lord Cain Chase is a man for the ladies...all the ladies. He says he has an understanding of how their brain works and so far it has served him in good stead. But he has come across the little female bookseller, JC Merton, and gets a good look at her body...errr...brain, all thoughts of those other ladies and their brains go out the window.

Now he needs Juliana's help to secure a book that ha...more

I had never read Neville before and only did so because of the comment by Eloisa James. It had a good plot but I wasn't thrilled over the first half - Neville put so much info into the chapters that I lost touch with the characters. I almost didn't finish it. I hate wasting time on a bad train wreck. But I am so glad that I went back to finish the book!!

It had a few twists to the book and once I started reading the book again I couldn't put it down!! WOW... it just got better and better. The sto...more

I truly enjoyed Neville's first installment of the Burgandy club. This book was sweet, romantic, exciting, and greatly appealing to fellow book lovers.

The main characters are Cain (The Marquis of Chase) and Juliana. While Cain was pretty common in being a sly man, renown for his sexual premise but secretly a wounded, sensitive soul. Blah blah. In that sense, I felt like it was pretty common but I fell in love with Juliana. A recent widow, she was nevertheless a strong women trying to make do in...more

I liked it pretty well except I thought some of the books, and intrigue into the books, was a little dry. Also, although I started liking the couple I felt they were more a warm friendly couple not a hot and passionate one. This made the sex on the boring side too. I'm glad she enjoyed it but wasn't much interested. I think it would have been better with a less is more attitude. Also the 3rd thing that she did was use a few too many words I had to stop to either look up or think about because I...more

Juliana, has worked hard to become a upstanding book seller and shopkeeper. She has had to do much to make sure no scandal could ever be attached to her, and hide a secret that could very well ruin her for the rest of her life. When she meets the Marquis of Chase, she knows that he is big trouble. The kind that would tempt her in a variety of wickedness and pure bliss. She knows she must stay away from him, and with warnings from all of her friends, she know she should be smart. However, she kno...more

So close to a five its not funny.

I'm glad I read this series in reverse order because I most impressed with this one and would have been slightly less enamoured of Minerva and Blake by the time I got to them.

Cain has a great backstory. Juliana's is a bit more conventional but still OK (although we didn't quite need the resolution to make the HEA work).

I liked the very frank take on the love scene INCLUDING a discussion of birth control (although I believe Cain would be more likely to call condo...more

I really enjoyed this book. It concentrated a fair amount on plot development, so if you're looking for pure steam or pure romance, you won't find it here, but don't let that stop you from reading it.

There are some things about this book I really appreciated and were quite different than your average HR. First, I read this out of order, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment at all. The main 3 heroes of the series do figure, but this is primarily about this hero, and the others are only sketched a...more

Nothing great here, but an enjoyable book none the less. The main characters are likable, the plot is reasonable. And you can even learn a bit about the rare book trade.
Wish there was a way to give this 3.5 stars.
A bit unusual in that the heroine is a tradesman's widow, who carries on her husband's trade (rare book dealer), and only crosses the path of our wild marquis because he's hoping to recover a rare book that once belonged to his family. She's not in poverty, her business is not failing....more

I'd read this one before, but because it wasn't rated on Goodreads I goofed and bought it again. So I'll rate it based on the 2nd read—tougher in some ways because I know the story. But nicer in other ways, because if, once I recognize the story I still want to finish, it is going to get an extra star just because the story holds up for a second reading.

This one begins with Joseph Merton, a drunk, happy, soon-to-be filthy, stinkin', rich bookstore owner. He's headed home from a buying trip with...more

This is a very enjoyable read. It has all the classic elements of romance: an heiress that doesn't know she's an heiress, a noble son that gets tossed out of his home, persons of "lower rank" in that time period, a villan, and an estranged sister that shows up on the hero's door step. Neville weaves these elements and others, into a good story. The characters are believable, and have a great relationship. I enjoyed how they were able to joke and tease oen another all in the name of fun. Plus, bo...more

This was the first book I have ever read by Miranda Neville, and I was surprised by how much I loved it. The past few books I've red had been very standard, nice but nothing I connected with. I'm glad I found Miranda, I immediately read all of the rest of the books in the series and now I'm on to others she has written. This book had two very interesting flawed characters who definitely learned as a result of their relationship. The writing was stellar, and it felt like so much happened, and the...more

What an interesting historical romance. We've got a little bit of everything: romance, intrigue, and books!

I was surprised by Juliana's profession, or perhaps that she'd adopted her husband's and continued to be moderately successful with it. Then again, as her dowry was used to open the bookstore, I suspect she'd have a vested interest to keep it successful. She and Chase do emit some sparks, when their romance comes right down to it, so I'm anxious to see if they will reappear in future books....more

This book was different, and reminded me of a sexier version of Laura Lee Guhrke. Juliana is a widow whose husband died a violent death. She's struggling to maintain her bookstore and build her reputation as a bookwoman in the face of those who believe a woman is not as capable as a man. Chase has a man-whore reputation, and he prides himself on the caricature of himself that he's built to hide all his angst. But she doesn't let him hide, and Chase brings sunshine to her daily life. I liked them...more

I really enjoyed this book. I found I couldn't put it down I just kept having to know what was going to happen next. I thought that it was just about the perfect combination of romance, plot, and sensuality.

My only complaint was that the writing felt a bit juvenal at times. I am wondering if this is her first novel? At least that's the way it felt.

Cain is a completely unrepentant rake, but a novice in the book collecting world and decides to enter it anyway to get a book back that belongs to his family. Juliana has been a bibliophile her whole life and even now runs a bookstore on her own after her husband was murdered a year ago. She takes him on as a client for the big auction of books, and the more they see each other the more they like each other. Old family secrets and feuds are unveiled, a murderer discovered and his plot ruined, fa...more

I am not sure who recommended this author, but I am glad they did. I really like Ms. Neville's writing style. I was immediately drawn into the story and the characters. This is the first book of the series which is based on Bibliophiles and their acquiring books, books, and more books. If you are not interested in the world of books and book collectors, you might be put off by the 'book buying/selling' details. I usually find an author that wants to educate me while telling me a story off-puttin...more

I've read so much historical romance set in the Regency period that it's rare when I find a book set in a completely new environment. This was one of them. Set in the book collecting world, there were very few balls and soirees. Most of the gatherings centered around auctions or discussions about books. How refreshing!

From the beginning, it stroke me how real the world felt. The discussions about bindings, editions, and how crazy everybody was about the books reminded me a lot of us here in Good...more

The Marquis of Chase is not a reputable man but when he is directed to a bookseller to gain information and help purchasing rare books in an auction he meets Juliana Merton. Even though she is dressed dowdily in her widow weeds, he can see her beauty beneath and the sparks start to fly. Juliana is in desperate need of the funds she would receive by representing Chase at the auction and agrees to help him, even though she finds it hard to believe this notorious rake is truly serious about books....more

Really, really good for a debut! (Not sure if her first novel, but first series for sure.) I was pleasantly surprised. The novel started out a bit slow and I was at first turned off by the slightly unconventional storytelling and unique style of the author. But as she dug deeper into the story, I got used to it and am very very impressed with the sophistication of the story, characters, stylistic choices, etc. On another note, also loved the simplicity of the love story plot, you know I am no fa...more

I kept visualizing the title as "A wild Marquis appeared!" and the hero as a Pokemon. Um. Don't question my thought processes.

I quite enjoyed the book. It was fun. And I liked the view into the world of Regency bibliophiles, as I don't believe it's something I've come across in a romance before.

I found Chase to be the least interesting among him, Iverley, and Compton. I think I'm getting tired of heroes who are rakes with hearts of gold.

I came into this series as usual, by accident and in the middle book (I have a keen eye for picking book #3 of a series before finding out IT'S a series) but I liked this book, which happens to be the first, much better than the other one. Great story, funny, sexy and fast paced. This latter quality was an improvement on book #3 which I found a longer read and not as entertaining as this one.

Read up to p150. Never really felt connected to heroine in the story. One minute she's selling books, the next she is bedding one of the customers. Hero not someone I want to keep reading about. Uses heroine then wonders why she's mad at him. The rest of the story, between the many characters and the books involved, were confusing. I was looking forward to this one, too.

The first half of the book was interesting and I thought the book had great potential, but in the end it was disappointing - too many plots to keep straight and sorted out, and several of them came and went without really being resolved. The book auction was supposed to be exciting and suspenseful, but I lost interest in it because there were too many books to keep track of and too many confusing histories - the authors, publishers, previous owners, current owners, sellers and buyers all got jum...more

I wish I had enjoyed this story of a bibliophile and rake a little more, like any reader I adored the love story to the art of books and revelled in this forbidden romance between a Marquis and a widowed book seller.

However the story of Juliana and Chase only held my attention for so long, a long strung out story and somewhat perilous "mystery" dampened my enthusiasm somewhat.

(The Burgundy Club #1)
Marquis of Chase is thrown out of his home at the age of 16, by his father. He survives in London and comes to be known for his outrageous morals. Juliana Merton, a book seller with a mysterious past, is brought to his attention when a family heirloom turns up in a book auction.

4.5 stars. A really entertaining book.

Sometimes the heroine did some rather illogical things, but they weren't too bad and they were never bad enough to get her in trouble so it wasn't too bad. The mystery well-developed and the romance top notch.

A good book I'd recommend to a Regency lover.

Having read these things for more than 45 years, I am beginning to get annoyed at the titles and covers. Yes, some have little redeeming social value, but some are good books and, although fiction, full of history -- social, political, military, psychological, (yes, fashion too. :-).
