I almost wanted to give this book 3 stars, but in the end I couldn't do it. Basically this series is just 'ok' and stays that way the whole way through. Darina and Phoenix is still annoying as all heck, but suddenly we find out Darina and Summer were actually besties (why is this not focused on in previous books?) and so begins the hunt for Summer's killer. I used to adore this series, I was a bit iffy about the first one, but then I fell head over heal after finishing the second, but then tragedy struck and I wasn’t able to get my hands on the next two books, until now.

I really wanted to like this book and the series, The premis is great, the cover art is phenominal, but the pacing and the tone of these books just makes me .... Tired.

Darina is not at all likeable, and shes constantly in a state of depression, the whole town is always sad or angry. Shes constantly longing to see her dead boyfriend and the descriptions of the "beating wings" is growing old fast. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of this series. Each book gets better and better. The writing is fantastic, to the point, and keeps your attention from beginning to end. I feel that Ms. Maguire brings more to the table with each book, so of course I was gratified, yet sad, when I finished Beautiful Dead: Summer. The only character that remains is Phoenix. It’s not necessarily going to be a happy end, but I’m certain it will be a fulfilling one. Things have been building up to the final chapter in the heartbreaking love story between Darina and Phoenix. With three of the four deaths of her friends solved, Darina’s beloved boyfriend is now last on the list. I eagerly await Phoenix’s book, even if my heart is aching at what is to come.

I would recommend Beautiful Dead: Summer to anyone who enjoys unconventional young adult romances. The material is dark and complex, with characters that you come to love even as you are forced to let them go. My only regret is that once I’ve finished, I’ll have to pick up the first book and start all over again. Just as Darina refuses to relinquish her love for her Beautiful Dead boyfriend, I know I won’t be prepared to say goodbye to this series.

Darina is at times completely idiotic, almost psycho level unreasonable jealous girlfriend/teenager and the next second seems to pull herself together and be intuitive and sometimes even logical. Ok, if you haven’t read the series, Summer is book three in the Beautiful Dead series about the Beautiful Dead, souls chosen to return from limbo, marked with angel wings and given unique powers, to discover what happened to them and why they died. Following the same general premise as the first two books, Jonas and Arizona, Summer starts with a bang – literally picking up with Summer’s sudden death. Eden Maguire has created a rich series with an interesting and fluctuating cast of characters that adds depth to each installment of the Beautiful Dead story.

I read the first two books in the series a good while ago, and I quite enjoyed them, so I was excited to tackle Summer. As with the previous books, I enjoyed the dynamic between Darina and Phoenix, her (un)dead boyfriend, but I have to say that Darina’s voice got to me a bit this time. She was so jealous all the time, and I felt that almost hindered the story of Summer. I wanted to know what happened to Summer, but I felt it was weighted down by Darina’s insecurities. That said, I do love that the plot wasn’t so cut and dried this time. I enjoyed the twists and turns that came with a lack of a suspect in Summer’s shooting, and I thought that really propelled the mystery of Summer forward.

All in all, Summer is a good third installment in the Beautiful Dead series. It definitely kept me guessing despite my issues with Darina this time. I give it a strong 3.5 out of 5, and I’d recommend it to YA fans of the series (you should read books one and two first, or you’ll be lost), as well as those who enjoy fantasy and paranormal novels.

Every so often Darina is still driving out and visiting the barn where the Beautiful Dead stay while they are on this side, but the barn is always empty. Summer’s birthday is approaching though, as is the day she died just 3 weeks later, so Darina knows that the Beautiful Dead must return soon if she is to stand any chance of working out who killed Summer.

When they do arrive though, Summer comes first, without Phoenix, and tells Darina that Hunter wants her to stay away until he is ready for her to visit. He’s worried about people following her and discovering them. Darina’s love for Phoenix means that she can’t keep away though, and as usual she just finds herself in more trouble. The question is though, can she hold it together long enough to solve Summer’s murder, and finally free her?

I have to admit that although I have read book 1 – Jonas, I haven’t read book 2 – Arizona, but I saw this book in the library and just couldn’t resist!
Poor Darina is really struggling at the start of this book, she’s missing Phoenix so much, and she’s had a lot to deal with in terms of coping with her grief. All she really wants is to become one of the Beautiful Dead herself so that she can be with Phoenix forever. I really feel for Darina in this book, because she really does have it bad, so much so that she’s not even eating properly.

Summer’s murder is different to Jonas’ and Arizona’s, because Summer was killed in what appears to be a random shooting, so Darina finds it hard to even know where to start, but she does start, and this gives her the drive to keep going.
The most shocking part of this story for me was the event that happened on page 173! And then Darina had yet another death to come to terms with! I don’t know what it is about this town, but people are dropping like flies! I was really surprised when this person died though, I totally didn’t see it coming at all and I felt like crying!

I have to say that I totally wasn’t able to guess who the killer was in this instalment! I was literally just pages from the end when it was revealed, and I totally hadn’t guessed who it was!
There is only 1 book left to go in this series now – Phoenix (Which I also got at the library! Yay!) and I’m really looking forward to finding out how this all ends, and how Darina’s going to cope with saying goodbye to Phoenix for good!

I love the fact that this series is mostly focused on the mysteries surrounding the deaths of Jonas, Arizona, Summer and Phoenix. Yes it does have it's paranormal romance twist to it but I read it more because of these mysterious deaths that Darina has the task of trying to find the answers to.

Our human main character, Darina, is assigned the mission of solving the mystery behind Summer's death and thus setting Summer free and letting her pass on peacefully.

Darina is a main character so different and unlike any other. Her sass and spunk added a fun side to the story and kept the plot moving even when things got emotional. She learned a lot about herself in this addition to the series and her life actually started to go back to normal. Darina was able to spend time with some of the secondary characters, including Phoenix's younger brother. Her boyfriend, Phoenix, is still one of the Beautiful Dead but their time together is running out. Although they did gett to spend more time together and let their relationship continue to grow even when separated by such a terrible boundary.

While some parts of the book seemed a little too repetitive of the previous two, there were some intriguing and intense scenes and new sub-plots that made me want to keep reading and reading. Eden Maguire has a writing style different from so many authors and it adds a dark and mysterious tone to the series. She has created a cast of characters that each play a key role in the story and the reader becomes invested in wanting the best for them.

I would really only recommend picking this up if you've read the previous two novels as a lot of things tie together in this book. You may not entirely understand who the Beautiful Dead are and why they are there unless you've read Jonas and Arizona.

Overall, this was a satisfying and twisted addition to the Beautiful Dead series. I recommend picking this book up especially if you've read the first two, you'll want to know what happens to Summer and the rest of the characters. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the fourth, and final, book- Phoenix!

The novel brought tears to my eyes, for the emotion in this book of the series was powerful, grasping and truly moving in many different ways. Its almost as if this was the authors plan, that she wanted her readers to really get to know the characters so that she could understand the story properly. In this book we get to find out more about Summer.

The author does well to paint an image of Summer in the readers mind, A girl who is sweet, caring, considerate, but also determined and faithful. You really get to envision this girl and in many ways I could see her as being one of those types of girls that are friends with everyone and anyone regardless of what they look like or how they act. However, what she went through when she died was tragic and powerfully emotional because you know that it is something that does just happen out there in society, where people are shot for no reason at all. However, unlike the first two books in the series, the novel doesnt revolve entirely around Summer, in fact its almost as if you get to know her through Darinas actions rather than their conversations.

The whole jealousy scene between phoenix and darina though is becoming a little tiresome. A huge part of me just wants to shout at them, to make them realize that actually they will never ever be together again and that no matter how much they wish for it, they are going to have to get over it. I suppose this was kind of why I was hoping that something between logan and Darina, but when Logan dies, I found tears forming in my eyes. Although he seemed like a bit of a jerk at times, you could see that this was merely the frustration of not getting the girl he loved to realize his feelings. However, the cause of death also hit a little hard and a little close to home.

What I love about these series of books, is that if you really get into them and enjoy them, you understand them and connect to them. To any reader who enjoys this series, I am sure they will agree with the fact that you find yourself become a part of the story yourself, makin your own guesses and assumptions about what has happened, how, when and why. I truly do love these novels and hope that the library has the next one soon!!!(less)

Eso sí, ella y Phoenix siguen tan sosos como siempre, parecen de piedra y aunque la autora quiera meter el gusano de los celos, no funciona, más que nada porque ambos deben empezar a ir dándose cuenta de que se les agota el tiempo y que, por mucho que se amen –con poca chispa y muchas intromisiones por parte de Hunter–, Phoenix está muerto y eso no va a cambiar.
En esta ocasión las cosas se han resuelto de un modo que no esperaba y, si bien en los dos primeros volúmenes no era difícil adivinar quienes eran los culpables, en esta ocasión la cosa no esta tan clara, hay muchos frentes abiertos y muchas posibilidades. Sin embargo, cuanto más avanzo, menos cosas me cuadran con respecto a las Almas Elegidas, como Hunter y su "omnipresencia" o, si las Almas Elegidas son entes físicos, dónde están sus cadáveres, por qué ellos, de donde vienen sus poderes. En ese sentido creo que la autora no lo ha trabajado y en su intento de ser original ha dejado a unas criaturas que se quedan a medio camino de los fantasmas, de los zombis y de los brujos, y que a mí no acaban de convencerme.
La historia consigue introducir giros inesperados y además, me he dado cuenta de que lanza un gran mensaje sobre la pérdida de seres queridos. En Cuatro Almas, casi todo el mundo ha perdido a alguien importante para sí y vemos como cada uno supera esa pérdida de un modo u otro en un despliegue de emociones humanas que no son desconocidas al lector.
Los personajes han crecido y madurado, en especial Darina, que, como no está tan encerrada en sí misma, nos invita a conocer a otras personas de Ellerton, gente que la rodea, amigos y no tan amigos. Summer es un personaje con menos gancho que Arizona y, aunque me cae bien, el mito de perfección que la rodea resulta poco creíble, es imposible que alguien no tenga defectos. Phoenix por su parte, sigue siendo más soso que todas las cosas y el juego de celos con Darina... en fin... si el chico está muerto, ¿no debería animar a Darina a que siga con su vida? ¿a que encuentre a alguien? ¿pretende que ella esté siempre enamorada de él, llorándole y encerrándose en sí misma?
Rica en descripciones, la prosa de Maguire facilita la lectura y a pesar de que la extensión de la novela es más bien corta, consigue contar todo lo necesario y no sobra ni falta nada. Los fallos que se podrían encontrar antes se van solventando, no recae en la pastosidad de la que pecaba en Jonas.
Aunque no sería mi recomendación de cabecera, invito a que la gente pruebe esta saga. Guste o no, las novelas se leen en un santiamén y, como ya he mencionado, la cosa va mejorando. Es cierto que Jonas es una novela que deja mucho que desear, pero Arizona y Summer tienen más que ofrecer y sorprenden gratamente.
Tengo muchas ganas de conocer el desenlace de esta historia, de saber cómo murió Phoenix, que sucederá con las otras Almas Elegidas, quien es realmente Hunter y cuál es su relación con Darina, porque no parece que sea casual, y, por supuesto, cómo terminará esta trágica historia de amor abocada a un triste final.(less)

Eden throws in a few unexpected twists and turns with Summer's plot as her killer is hard to find, or should I say not having a clear suspect makes solving this case rather hard for Darina. I was much more frustrated with Darina this time around as she became a lot more jealous of Phoenix. I could understand that if this was the first book in the series, but it seemed more out place being in the third book in the series. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy seeing more of Phoenix and Darina together and I understand how much she misses him, but I don't get the whole jealously bit.

Summer's story is a sad complex puzzle to solve with an ending I didn't see coming. Since this is the 3rd book in the series, I would recommend picking up the first two and reading them before reading Summer's story. I do think this could be a stand alone, though it would be stretching it since Eden doesn't give much of a back story from the two previous books. Though that works with the story as each book carries on from where the last book leaves off, it may be a little frustrating to someone who wants to just read this book.

If you have enjoyed this series I would definitely recommend picking up Summer's story. I'm looking forward to reading Phoenix's story, though I know I'll have mixed emotions. I really want to know how he died, but at the same time I have a feeling his story will be the most complex and saddest one. (less)

První díl byl fajn, druhý díl jsem chtě nechtě musela "přetrpět", nyní mám hodnotit třetí díl, kde je ústřední postavou děje opět Darina (jak mně se to jméno pro ni nelíbí) a Summer, o které to celé tak nějak je (ale která je celým dílkem vedena někde v pozadí).

Ihned na začátku musím říci, že tři hvězdičky za tento díl jsou opravdu pěkné a zaslou...more Jsou tací, kteří si Krásných mrtvých užívají plnými doušky, pláčou u příběhu, a nedají na sérii dopustit. Já patřím na - řekněme - "odvrácenou stranu". Ihned na začátku musím říci, že tři hvězdičky za tento díl jsou opravdu pěkné a zasloužené. Darina už není ta protivná puberťačka, ale jde na jejím charakteru cítit jakýsi vývoj. Dokonce se neštěká s mámou Laurou a nevlastním otcem Jimem. V tomto díle poprvé na mne udělala docela příjemný dojem, už ani toho pláče a truchlení nad Phoenixem tam nebylo tolik, a zároveň Phoenix už taky nebyl takový nepovedený, příliš rozněžněný zombík, ale autorka už mu nasadila někdy i trochu té vzpurnosti, a hned se mi to líbilo více. Sice je ta změna decentní, ale já ji pocítila. Tím tedy chválím autorku, že sama na sobě zapracovala a možná se i poučila z chyb, tedy ne z chyb, ale názorů čtenářů na kdysi-velmi-protivné tahouny celého příběhu.

Co mne trošku zklamalo byl konec, aneb jak už víme, příběhy Krásných mrtvých jsou živeny detektivní zápletkou, kde se hledá vrah onoho dotyčného, který potřebuje odejít v klidu z odvrácené strany někam ... kam? :D Řekněme na svou stranu :) No. Tentokrát to bylo až příliš zdlouhavé a pointa celého toho zaláskovaného kruhu mne nedojala. Zemřelo až příliš mnoho lidí. V jednu chvíli to bylo opravdu smutné, i když nepochopitelné, ale s dalšími obětmi to už bylo na pováženou a já nedokázala přijít na to, co tím autorka sledovala. A jak se bude vůbec vyvíjet poslední díl?

Možná je to dobře, že mám takto nahlodané svědomí :) Že tápu, co a jak bude. Protože tohle se u prvních dvou dílů nepodařilo. Teď tedy úspěšně. A tak to má být!(less)

I really like to love this book but I feel like Darina is not a really good example/model especially to readers at my age who read this book. She's a rebellious, impatient and somewhat disrespectful to her parents - even I do understand what she's going through; left by his dad, death of her boyfriend, friends and all that. Nad touhle recenzí jsem hodně dlouho přemýšlela. Tak nějak jsem nevěděla co napsat, a stále si tím nejsem tak úplně jistá. Když už jsem přečetla první, a potom i druhý díl, byla by hloupost nedočíst sérii do konce. A tak jsem začala číst třetí....

Připadá mi, že se autorka ze svých chyb poučila. Ale někdy může být ponaučení i na škodu. V první díle na nás vyvalila všechno hned na začátku, a to nebylo moc dobré, ale v tomto díle byl začátek až moc zdlouhavý. To byla ta špatná stránka ponaučení. Teď k té dobré. Darina byla v tomhle díle celkem snesitelná! Už to nebyla ta ufňukaná puberťačka, ale stala se celkem normální. I Phoenix se posunul ve svém charakteru trochu dopředu, a celkově bylo vidět zlepšení.

Pro Darinu bylo v tomhle případě asi nejtěžší najít vraha, protože Summer zastřelili v nákupním středisku, a vrah mohl být i úplně cizí člověk. Naprosto nechápu, proč to Darina začala řešit až měsíc před odchodem Summer. Měla na to čtyři a půl měsíce, ale oni skoro čtyři měsíce promrhali jen tak. Prý "shromažďovali sílu". Co mě ale nesmírně zklamalo, bylo, že celá záhada se vyřešila stejně jako v předchozích dílech. Ale i tak je to pořád průměrná kniha s příjemnou detektivní zápletkou, u které je velmi těžké uhádnout vraha. Jakmile jsem jednou začala číst, nemohla jsem se odtrhnout protože jsem potřebovala znát vraha.

Čitateľ si pokračovaním príbehu nikdy nemôže byť stopercentne istý, pretože všetko sa môže zmeniť otočením stránky. Časť Summer bola podľa môjho názoru najlepšia z celej série a Eden Maguire naplno rozvinula svoj talent i potenciál rozprávača.

Opäť sa stretávame s Krásnymi mŕtvymi a máme možnosť nahliadnuť do ich vnútra. Autorka totiž niekoľko strán venovala vnútornému opisu postáv a charaktery Krásnych mŕtvych sa postupne vyvíjajú. Stretávame sa s nejedným tajomstvom a po dočítaní ich určite niektorí začnú vnímať inak ako doposiaľ. Vyvíja sa aj Darina. Síce sa od prvých častí radikálne nezmenila, stále svojim rodičom klame a vzdoruje, ale niekedy som jej rozhodnutia pochopil a v jej situácii by som sa zachoval rovnako. Aj napriek tomu vidíme rozdiel: je sebavedomejšia a rozvážnejšia.

Eden Maguire sa dokázala s príbehom pohrať. Prinútila ma rozmýšľať nad hlavným páchateľom a niekoľkokrát zmenila jeho totožnosť. Až do poslednej strany si nebudete istý, kto ním vlastne bol. Nemôže sa zaprieť jej dar reči a schopnosť vytvoriť aj z pokojnej scény akčný zvrat. Najmä pred koncom, keď sa objavujú nové a nové postavy, vás prinúti listovať ako o život a neprestať čítať. Aj vďaka tomu ju „zhltnete“ za dva večery. A štýl autorky si naozaj užijete. Je písaná jednoducho, no aj napriek tomu vás niektoré pasáže chytia za srdce. Alebo skôr to, čo sú ľudia schopní urobiť pre lásku.

Tretia časť ma príjemne prekvapila. Na svoje si prídu milovníci akcie, napätia a tajomstiev. V štvrtej, a zároveň poslednej, časti nás čaká pre Darinu najťažšia úloha. Phoenix. Na vyvrcholenie príbehu sa už teším. Slovenský preklad z dielne vydavateľstva Fragment nás čaká na jeseň. (less)

I had thought this novel would be similar to “Arizona” - but I was wrong. This one was way more surprising and intriguing, and a little exasperating, even. It reached a point in which I thought it would have a sad ending and everything would crumple down, and, in a certain way, it kind of did. There was a lot of suspense and light-horror, and I love that in a story.

“Summer” didn't disappointed me at all, and now I can't wait to read “Phoenix” and find out how this heart-wrenching story ends.

Darina no esta de acuerdo, aun así no le queda mas remedio que obedecer. Sabe que no le queda mucho tiempo, faltan dos semanas para el aniversario de la muerte de Summer y esta ya se esta debilitando, pero no sabe por donde comenzar. A Summer la querían y admiraba mucha gente, cantaba como los ángeles, y su muerte a manos de un tirador anónimo en el centro comercial, fue un shock para el pueblo de Ellerton.

Darina estaba presente cuando su querida amiga murió y no pudo hacer nada, así que intentar averiguar quien se puso a disparar en un centro comercial lleno de gente no va a ser fácil, pero mientras hace sus pesquisas empieza a pensar que quizás y después de todo lo que mato a Summer no fue un tiro fortuito, ¿y si alguien quería matar a la dulce Summer?.

El libro sigue la estela de los anteriores, solo que en esta ocasión Darina no podrá pasar todo el tiempo junto a Phoenix y un hecho que ocurre durante la historia, pondrá en tela de juicio la opinión que tiene ella sobre Phoenix. Aun así, la historia me ha parecido algo mas floja que la anterior, dejando todo el misterio de la muerte de Summer y la solución de este para el final. Por o menos Darina se nota algo mas madura y menos tonta que los dos anteriores libros.

Como he dicho en otras ocasiones, la trama es original, aunque se podría haber aprovechado mas y mejor. Aun así, es una historia que me ha entretenido bastante y que estoy deseando leer la continuación y ultimo libro de esta saga.(less)

Eden získala na Birmingham University doktorát v Anglické literatuře a v současné době žije se svými dvěma dcerami v Yorkshire Dales. Část každého roku tráví na ranči v Coloradu, kde relaxuje při jízdě na koni v horách a užívá si svého perfektního štěstí. Kdykoliv může, cestuje - byla tak už na místech od New Yorku až po Nairobi. Když je doma, ráda chodí do kina či divadla a oddává se své vášni při malování či studiu historie.

Od chvíle, kdy Darina pomohla Arizoně odhalit, jak vlastně zemřela, aby se mohla posunout dál, uběhla docela dlouhá doba. Darina má strach, že už neuvidí svého milého Phoenixe, s jehož smrtí se ještě stále nevyrovnala. Jenže přichází výročí smrti Darininy kamarádky, Summer, a tak se Krásní mrtví opět objeví. Tentokrát ovšem s posilami.

Darina se nemůže zbavit pocitu, že tentokrát tady něco nehraje. Pátrání po tom, co se stalo toho osudného dne v obchodním centru, kdy viděla, jak Summer zastřelili, otevře staré rány. A také plno dlaších tajností točících se nejen okolo Krásných mrtvých, ale také občanů města...

K českému překladu nemám nijak velké výhrady. Jen mě v jednom momentu poněkud omráčil výraz, že jedna z postav zaujala rohrovskou pozici. V životě jsem tohle označení neviděla, neslyšela a už vůbec jsem nepochopila jeho význam. Přitom šlo jen o to, že si jedna z postav hodila nohy na palubovku a opřela se do sedadla. Člověk se pokaždé dozví něco nového.

Tuhle sérii čtu postupně už od roku 2011, každý rok jeden díl, což mě samotnou docela překvapilo. Nejspíš jde o to, že série není jedna z těch, co by vás nutila si rychle pořídit každý další díl, jen abyste se dozvěděli, co se bude dít dál. Těžko říct, jestli je to tím, jakým stylem jsou knihy napsány, či samotnou romantickou zápletkou, která podle mého je už od začátku odsouzena k záhubě, a proto nevidím nejmenší důvod v tom, abych z ní byla odvázaná. Jenže já nejsem cílová skupina a myslím, že mladším ročníkům tahle jednohubka přijde vhod.

I v tomto díle se setkáváme se starými známými tvářemi - a také s několika dalšími. Darina se mi v tomto díle zdála snesitelnější, sympatičtější a víc se chovala jako holka, jejíž okolí prošlo bolestnou ztrátou, kterí se výrazně otiskla také do ní. Neví, jak se s tím vším má vyrovnat a jako chytá se všeho možného, jen aby nemusela čelit realitě. Celkově se mi kniha zdála promyšlenější, více hrála na city a autorka se opřela i do vážnějších témat.

Autorka vás nejspíš svým vyprávěním příběhů nedostane na kolena, ale rozhodně vás dostane tím, jak si se svými postavami pohrává. A že si s nimi hraje ve velkém. Až do poslední chvíle netušíte, kdo je vlastně vrah a jak to celé skončí. Ono to sice vypadá jednoduše a logicky by každý z Krásných mrtvých měl dojít svého rozhřešení, ale autorka vás tahá za nos tak dlouho, že si pokaždé myslíte, že tentokrát se jim to nepodaří.

Tato série díl od dílu lepší a uvěřitelnější. Jsem proto dost zvědavá, co se bude dít v posledním díle, protože po zvratech a odhaleních, které se udály v třetím díle série, se už může nejspíš stát téměř všechno. Knize tak dávám 4 hvězdičky.

BEAUTIFUL DEAD: SUMMER, by Eden Maguire picks up a few months after the last one left off, Summer's story is so raw and emotional, while still action packed and thrilling. Darina faces many new challenges in the latest installment of the Beautiful Dead and I could not stop reading.

In Summer’s story Darina must investigate what the true circumstances were behind her former best friend’s murder. She is also tasked with providing some level of closure to friends and family. In this way, the book is not any different than the two before. Darina is given marching orders by Hunter, the investigation makes it’s usual twists and turns, Darina relates to friends and family and then the mystery is solved to whatever positive or negative end. Pretty formulaic all things considered.

Having said that, I enjoyed the book. I continue to find the characters likable — though admit that Darina was far more whiny in this book than the others. I was worried the whole book would be about her grief over Phoenix but thankfully it was short-lived. Hunter is still a controlling jack-ass but there are times where he’s shown to be human which makes his other less appealing characteristics more bearable.

If I had one complaint about this book it would be that despite the fact that the story centered around Summer there was a surprising lack of participation by her character. Very little time was spent interacting with her. Sure, there was loads of talk about her but I was surprised there was little time spent with her. This is made more disappointing since her story was one that had a lot of power behind it. As a rising star she is tragically taken away too soon in what is thought to be a random act of violence. I won’t divulge the particulars because that is where all the mystery elements come in but I will say that had there been more focus on Summer there could have been some really great opportunities for teens to learn about violent actions.

The romance between Darina and Phoenix is still going strong. They have a few hiccups but overall they are as in love as ever. It seemed a bit more angsty and amped up than in past books but I’m not surprised by that since the next book in the series is the focus on him and their ultimate parting of ways. Summer’s story built in some good tension and yearning for them that will definitely influence what I presume will be a pretty tragic and emotional culmination to the series.

The Beautiful Dead isn’t heavy lifting by any stretch but it’s not fluff either. It has an interesting premise, a decent mystery component and relatable characters. I continue to enjoy this series and I’m interested to see where the last book takes me.(less)

So, while my copy of Summer was coming in the mail, I quickly re-read Arizona to catch myself up. And I found that while I absolutely love these books when I first read them, rereading them it's as great. Maybe because I already know the mystery, so it's not as entertaining and I'm not enthralled, or maybe because the writing isn't very good...

I've enjoyed The Beautiful dead series so far. The idea is interesting and really hooks you from the very first book. You're invested and want to know what a really happened to all four teenagers. Which, really is a brilliant marketing idea.

It's been nearly a year since Darina's friend Summer was killed in a random shooting at a shopping mall. Darina was a witness to the shooting and now it is up to her to try and find the killer so that Summer can finally rest in peace. Was the shooting really as random as it seemed and if it was how on earth is Darina supposed to track down the killer? At the same time she must cope with her grief over the death of her boyfriend Phoenix and prepare herself for when he must leave her forever.

Darina was a witness to the shooting and now it is up to her to try and find the killer so that Summer can finally rest in peace. At the same time she must cope with her grief over the death of her boyfriend Phoenix and prepare herself for when he must leave her forever.

This is the 3rd book in the Beautiful Dead series and although you can probably read it as a stand alone story I think you'll find it easier to follow the background story if you read the books in order. I don't think there was much information about what the Beautiful Dead actually are in this installment so you may find it confusing if you're new to the series.

Darina is still struggling to deal with both her grief at the deaths of her boyfriend and her friends but also with the existence of the Beautiful Dead. It's been about 4 months since she helped Arizona solve the mystery of her death and since that time she has had no contact with Phoenix or any of the other Beautiful Dead. She is plagued with doubts about whether they really exist or if they were a product of her grief fueled imagination. I understand that she is desperately missing Phoenix and would do anything to spend time with him again but I have to confess I was hoping she would have started to deal with things better by now. I'm beginning to get a little bored with her attitude and the way she is acting and it's putting me off picking up the final book in the series.

One of the things that annoys me most is the way that the Beautiful Dead (Hunter in particular) treat her. They need her help in order to investigate the deaths but Hunter is completely unwilling to allow her access to the Beautiful Dead and doesn't want her spending time with Phoenix. The way he is constantly threatening her and being so nasty grates on my nerves and if I was in Darina's position I think I would have walked away from the whole mess and told them to sort out their own problems. I'd really like to see Darina stand up for herself a bit more but it's hard when Hunter is holding all the cards and she misses Phoenix so much.

While this is a series I like I'd have to say it isn't one that I love. The plot was a little slow to get going but was interesting once it built up momentum. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Summer's death but had guessed fairly early on who was behind it. There was one particular plot line about Logan that really annoyed me - how could that have been allowed to happen? - but it was definitely a twist that I hadn't expected. While I am starting to get a little bored with the series the books are quick and easy reads that I get through in 1 or 2 sessions and I will definitely read the final book at some point because I want to know how the overall story arc plays out(less)
