The Holy Terror
I want to start off by saying that this wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. And it definitely wasn't as bad as it could have been. I had the lowest of hopes for this one after reading Divine Misdemeanors (★) last year so maybe that's why I liked Flirt more. Trust me though, it was nowhere near perfect and was also still far away from her earlier books in the series. I'm slightly wary though, could this be a sign of things to come? Will the Anita books continue to get better? I'm afraid to th...more

Good morning, boys and girls! Gather round Miss Michelle now. That's right. (Amelia, stop poking Mel. It's not nice.)

Today, we're going to do a little lesson in writing style. I want you all to look at the following passage and tell me: What bothers you most about it?

The boy came in with a book. I couldn't see the cover of the book. He always had a book with him, so it didn't surprise me he had a book. I asked him, "Why do you always have a book?" He looked at the book and said "I like books."

Flirt is the 18th installment in the Anita Blake series. It's not a full novel like her usual's, it's about the size of her novel MICAH. (approx. 200 pages). No matter, I was excited to get another Anita dose. The wait for each novel is a year(like most) and it's always a killer.

This time around, the usual characters who are in this story are Micah, Nathaniel, Jason and of course, Anita. And when her lovers are threatened, Anita will go through anything to save them...

I'm super happy Anita is g...more

Why did I do this to myself? Why return to Anita Blake, when all she does is annoy and frustrate me?

Because I am a fool.

But as foolish as I am, at least I didn't write a novel in which all the male characters tell Anita how hot and desirable and wonderful she is for an entire chapter. Is there a plot? Sure, but it's solved in about two minutes. Truthfully, there are so many problems with this story that it’s hard to know what to complain about most.

-The pages upon pages of descriptions of each...more

What a self-indulgent bit of tripe. The conceit for this book is that the plot stems from a thoroughly uninteresting and commonplace thing that actually happened (gasp!) to Hamilton and a few of her friends. The only amazing thing about it is that Hamilton and her friends seem to have blown the incident out of all proportion, into some sort of proof of their inherently awesome artistic sexiness AND something worthy of creating "art" around. The result is little more than a boring and extended an...more

Flirt is a short book. I think it could have fit nicely into another book with more exciting scenes, but I’m not the author I feel that it was a bit rushed, but other than that, not too many “complaints” from me. Hell, I think out of all the books in this series .. I can count the number of complaints on one hand

Flirt. Anita is kidnapped and taken from her sweeties that are being watched by snipers. A new Rex, a stranger and his pride, take her away from her loved ones and forces her to raise a...more

Does anyone else get the feeling that if Anita, or Merry, for that matter, decided to do something as quotidian and mundane as changing her brand of toothpaste, it would provoke a long, drawn-out, tortuous discussion/debate/conversation (with all her friends, lovers and enemies, and random passersby) about her motivations for the brand change, the inevitable or potential repercussions of the brand change, how her unexpected brand-changing decision upsets and discommodes said lovers, friends and...more

I have gotten to the point where Anita Blake books do nothing for me. It's because everyone wants to be with her, be like her or kill her. She is all powerful and doesn't need anyone. She's Buffy, but with dark hair. And by the end of the series, I wanted to stake Buffy my own damned self.

The one thing that pisses me off the most about Anita Blake though is the sex. I get it, you were raised one way, with those beliefs. But I hate that she's with fifty million lovers, is still a prude and pushes...more

While I did like this book, I think of it more as filler than an actual entry into the Anita Blake series. It's a lot like Micah was--focusing on one story and no subplot. I'm curious to see if any of the events from this story make it into the next full-length Anita book.

For those hoping to see more of Anita's necromancy, you will see that here. I don't want to say more just yet, but there were a couple of plot points involving Anita's character development that disappointed me.

This book also c...more

I should say up front so you can evaluate my review that I greatly enjoyed the first 8 or so of the Anita Blake books up to around Obsidian Butterfly. I'm one of those that believe the series badly went wrong with the ardeur with its have sex or die imperative and books filled with so many chapters of sex scenes, that if you took them out, you wouldn't have wordage for a short novella. I have been able to at least read and finish the prior books though, even if with decreasing enjoyment--this is...more

Old time Anita fans are going to like the fact that we see more of her necromancy in this book (and less ardeur) than we have seen in a long time. It's shorter than her usual, but this is balanced by the fact it is centered around one event combining Anita's daily life with her work life, rather than multiple plot lines.

Nathaniel and Jason (my two favorite guys beside J-C, who we don't see much of anymore) and Micah are the guys with Anita-time in this one, but it's less sex and more relationsh...more

It's not to say that I hated this book, it was more along the lines of what was the point of it all?

Anita has yet another adoring gorgeous man hanging off her arms and we've established yet again that her powers are awesome even without her men. What happened to the good old days of blood and gore.

I'm not sure why I keep reading these anymore. I think it's just to see if Anita will ever die or shift or become a vampire or just get a much bigger bed.

Made it to Book 18~

"This one was just...Well~I have hit a dead end with this series it has been doing nothing but going downhill since book 10, and it's time to end~

I'm washing my hands of this mess now~"I'm Done.

I do recommend the first 10 books, there are some really good one's~This series has been addicting for me as you can see~but I just kicked the habit~and now I'm just cleaning this mess off my hands for good

Once I found out this would be a short story, rather than a full book, I thought I wouldn't read it, but I was curious to find out why Laurell K. Hamilton would name an Anita "Bloody Guts and Sex" Blake book with the fluffy title "Flirt". So I got it at my library and now I understand. Basically this book is like "Micah" in that it was an idea that Laurell (or her publishers) couldn't let go of; a sort of "surprise-look-what-we-did" kind of thing. I won't say that the plot is amazing, but I like...more

The only reason I gave this booklet 1 star was that I couldn't assign a negative star rating. This pathetic attempt at a novella was so bad it hurt my feelings. The action wasn't so bad, but the dialog was just awful. I understand that the title of the book is "Flirt", but I don't need to be reminded in every paragraph.

The Anita Blake world is taken over by an evil power that forces people to use the word "flirt" in every verbal exchange, regardless of how ludicrous it sounds in context. Here's...more

The more I think about this book the more it creeps me out.

There will be spoilers.

So it's a typical Anita Blake novel from the recent lot. Jean-Claude is at a distance, Richard is invisible boy and mostly Anita is working with the were-pack of toy boys.

The story starts with an incident that is apparently based on a real-life incident Laurell has with some friends while travelling (only with more clothes, Anita's men seem to favour tank-tops). Recounted by Laurell in an afterword and shown in a...more

Good writing, bad value:

I still love the Anita Blake series; unlike many readers, I have no objection to the direction the stories have taken in the last dozen or so books, moving away from paranormal mystery thrillers to not-so-soft-core porn. I loved the early books, I love the later books. They're different, but still just as good.

That being said, for those who preferred the early books, this one has a bit more of the flavor of the earlier books. There is more concentration on story and less...more

I really went back and forth between one and two stars on this one. It's more like 1.5.

My first thought upon finishing this book was 'that's it? Really?'. It's a short book. Heck, I think I've ready short stories that were longer. It's also devoid of any (boyfriend) sex that I can recall, which is one of its redeeming factors. We get back to raising zombies and dealing with bad guys, but the problem is...the story is so shallow. Seriously. The bad guys were so cliche that I called everything th...more

Be warned, this is a short (too short) story, and I not sure what to tell without revealing too much. The title is not quite there either - yes a small, small part of it is about Nathaniel and Jason teaching Anita to flirt, but the main part I think is something else entirely. This time Anita gets in trouble because of her necromancy, but still on of her wereanimals get to play. And that part is actually very good. It kept me reading just wanting to see what would happen. And boy does something...more

Let me give a little caveat before my review: I loved this series when it first came out. I read every book multiple times over and couldn't wait for the next one (and the next one, etc.). Later in the series, it got to the point that it felt as if the books were a bit too much sex all the time. Don't ever get me wrong - there is NOTHING wrong with sex in books - but I prefer in novels that it fits into where the story is going and not just thrown in at 'random' times. If I wanted random sex sce...more

I spent part of my day conferencing with my students about their reading logs. One student was surprised to learn that Breaking Dawn could be counted as science fiction, fantasy, or romance; she was even more surprised when she decided that it fit in best under gothic/horror. I experienced the same feeling today as I read Flirt. I have it listed under fantasy, science fiction, and urban fantasy. I think I need to add gothic/horror to my list of genres.

I enjoyed this brief interlude. It's a cute...more

To start with, I agree with everybody that this should not be considered a novel but a novella. It's too short to be priced as it is. I won't go on and talk about the book as I always do because I think that people who haven't read the series should be given the chance to either like it or not based on their preference. Lately the series lost a lot of it's followers because of how the series lost it's "spark" so I'll leave it to you to decide what you think about the books.

So there, the story st...more

This was another book sort of like Micah. It had very few of the main characters for most of the book and it was very short, almost like a filler book. I do like watching the turn Anita seems to be taking. One thing that has held my interest in this series even though I don't really like it very much is that it is interesting to see the character development in Anita as she really does seem to be blurring the line between human and monster. Not just in abilities, though she does seem to pull tho...more

This was a short novella style book by Hamilton. I liked much better than some of her recent novels. Slow to build but a lot of punch. Finally Anita gets back to her roots as an animator and she uses her power for bad to create a justified ending....or balance.

In the beginning we see some very rich people try to force Anita to give up on her principles for money. She holds on to her values dearly and refuses to help them raise some one for a "bad" reason. Then she is kidnapped by some very bad...more

I read The first Anita Blake novel about a year ago then about 3 months ago I bought the whole series (except #20 obviously) on e-bay. I have been marathon reading the series, but the last several books I had to take a break and read another book in between. The first several books were so good, then it really started getting far fetched when she started collecting men. Now it just seems like her men are constantly complementing her. Don't get me wrong I love the Erotic parts, and I don't know i...more

Save me from a heroine who is never wrong and copied and pasted paragraphs of description and dialogue.

Anita Blake is obviously the epitome of everything Ms. Hamilton would like to be, surrounded by ethereal men of all shapes and sizes, all of whom believe she is the most amazing thing since sliced bread and of course add to this fact that everyone around her underestimates her constantly, and then eventually either dies or runs away or falls hopelessly in love with her (in the space of a 5 min...more
