This is an enjoyable, if a bit predictable, collection of speculative fiction stories each dealing in some way with the American Civil War (I love how we speak of it as "the" civil war as if there has never been another anywhere else). Some of the stories are definitely much more notable than others. My ratings for individual stories are as follows:
Martial
by Nancy Springer

I'll give this story points for approaching the subject from a perspective overlooked by the rest of the stories...more

Uneven selection of science fiction and fantasy short stories involving the Civil War, some are just a little too predictable, others too gory.
Best ones for my money are:
* "The Three Cigars", by Robert Sheckley. Funny.
* "The Pluck of O'Reilly", by Gary Alan Ruse. Hilarious.
* "The Last Full Measure", by David Bischoff. Thoughtful.
* "Burial Detail", by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Grim but thoughtful.
