Interesting, but unfocused. Didn't like the fictionalized frame stories. Felt like walking around with a very likeable person who is telling you all about the history of town and people's lives, and occasionally saying "oh, and that place? Totally haunted." or "and he's haunting place x". A haunting book that can safely be read alone at night, in a storm, with wolves howling in the distance. And possibly even with zombies pounding on the door and objects flying about the room on their own. Not s...more
I like Ogden's writing, but he takes an approach I dislike: he fictionalizes the accounts. While this book has a lot of factual information, he likes to create characters that observe the ghostly manifestations. This may not be a problem for some readers. One thing I really like is that Ogden avoids sensationalism for the most part, which results in a classier-than-average book on the subject. So overall I'm giving 4 stars because the positives outweigh the negatives.
