Božínku, to bylo dojemný. Bez ironie.

I have really loved this book. Matka is an antifascist story, also showing the conflict between a biological mother and the homeland as a mother, regarding their children in the context of an ongoing war. You will find lots of symbolism, like the chessboard with a configuration of pieces showing a problem for which there is no possible winner.

The play was horrifying, and in the same time it was easy to discover the motivation behind the actions of the characters. The author manages to show perfectly the terror and despair of the mother, as well as the fiery determination and boldness of the sons. But what captured me the most were the scenes, where the mother talks to the deceased ones. They really left me sorrowful.

I've read this book only once I will never do it again. It's so amazing and so horrifing. I can't imagine anything worse than loosing your family one by one. This is an amazing work, so emotional that I don't want to experience it again. Well, maybe once more if I find this in a theather - but I'll go to watch only if I won't have any children on my own by that time.

Mister Karel presented to the Czechs their own "Mother" as did Gorki before him in Russian literature. I was hoping for a bit more depth and little did I know, how disappointed I would become. The play is sad and stereotypically simple: Men want to be heroes in war, women want to love them and live...

If a book is supposed to leave you emotionally damaged, it did a good job. But I personally dont like books which do this. So I didnt like it. But its not the authors fault, its just not my kind of book. ...more
