The winding Mississippi weaves wicked tales while New Orleans has always been a place of good and evil, of humid nights, heavy passions, sinister greed and tricky affairs. Angelica Carew's romantic entanglements never seemed so tricky until the day death stared her in the face. It was none other than Renold Harden who saved her life but it was she who would save his soul. ...more

Renold Harden's stepfather gambled and lost the plantation that's been in the family for over 100 years to a cheatin' card sharp, and then shot himself. Renold has vowed revenge against the gambler, who has gifted the plantation to his daughter Angelica as a bride gift. Renold's plan involves compromising Angelica (with witnesses!), so that she'll be forced to marry him and he'll save the plantation for his mother and stepsister. Simple right? Uh, no, this is romance after all. Renold i

This book was utterly devious. It sucked me in to a vortex of passion, intrigue, half truths and semi-scandalous love in order to not let me go until I practically inhaled the text from the very last page!

I have not read such a good novel in a very very long time.
The attention to particular items, places, people, and all around charm of America in that age..
Or was it the glitter and horror combined in one, from Steamboat explosions to the Mardi Gras, showcasing a breathtaking and picturesque vie

I haven’t read a Jennifer Blake book in quite some time. My favorites of hers from the past are: Royal Seduction,Royal Passion, andFierce Eden. Those were published between 1983-1985 and are true bodice rippers. I love them! This one however, fell short of my expectations.

Renold Harden seeks out Angelica Carew to exact revenge against her father for stealing his family’s plantation. After saving her life, he marries her and begins his plan to destroy her father. He doesn’t expect to find A

This book was both a satisfying and frustrating read! Some of the prose was purple, but what a lovely shade of lavender it was!

I'll start with the frustrating points, then move on to the satisfying...

The Frustrating
This is a paraphrased version of a conversation between the hero and the heroine:

H: I have loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you!
h: ... {How I love him! But is he lying about loving me?}
h: I cannot trust you, you lied to get my inheritance!

Now imagine that conversation taking p

I picked up a collection of Jennifer Blake's books on Amazon, very cheaply. I figured they would be a quick read. I was wrong about that one. I found it hard to get through this book at times, bored with the story. There are 3 more in the collection and not sure I will read them when I have so much other stuff I want to read.

I found the story boring and slow. I found the characters not at all likeable, besides maybe one of the main characters Michel. Renold was a complete jerk, and I am being n

A good story set in the world of a 19th century Louisiana plantation, with well drawn characters, however the dialogue was odd. The characters seemed to talk in riddles and it was hard to distinguish their real meaning, necessitating the characters to follow each line of dialogue with an explanation of what was really meant in between the lines. A lot of inner monologue expanding on the heroine's doubts and misinterpretations of every single action of the hero, which grew to be tedious. Neverthe ...more

In the meantime, Jennifer Blake's Silver-Tongued Devil is an old book outfitted with a fancy new cover and was re-released at the beginning of this month. It was originally published in 1995, and is truly an old-school "bodice ripper" novel. Jennifer Blake is one of those c

Lies and the tangles they engender abound in SILVER-TONGUED DEVIL by Jennifer Blake, a tale of revenge in antebellum Louisiana.

Injured in a steamboat explosion, Angelica awakens in an unfamiliar bedroom to find herself married to Renold, a man she barely knows. With her father and betrothed dead in the same disaster, she must depend on this stranger. But questions abound. She can't remember a wedding, and is her silver-tongued "husband" as kind-hearted as he appears?

With her trademark use of acc

SILVER TONGUNED DEVIL by Jennifer Blake is a historical romance that is not for the faint of heart. Strong characters, rich description and agonizing drama make this novel an eloquent, yet emotional journey.

Angelica Carew knew the expected path of her life. She was to marry the man her father had chosen and live out her days on the property granted to her as her dowry, Bonheur. Little does she know, but Renold Harden is going to do everything he can to make sure Angelica is married...not to her

The story moves somewhat slowly at first, but overall I think the plot is rather clever. The hero is compelling and the author does a remarkable job really letting you know who he is. By the middle of the book, you'll know him so well that you'll be able to predict his reactions, which is a mark of really good character development. Still, there are areas where I was just...well...confused.

SPOILER ALERT:
For instance, everyone is acting as if Mr. Carew has a legitimate claim to the plantation,

Along the Mississippi, in Louisiana and New Orleans in the late nineteenth century, life was not for the faint hearted. The thin veneer of society’s niceties cracks easily in the damp, steamy climate and the rough, cruel, greedy traits of humanity show through. Every one of the seven cardinal sins seems to thrive in the elite of society and in the most base of humanity.

Angelica Carew becomes a pawn in a revenge plot—a plot of which sh

Silver-Tongued Devil is an acquired taste. It feels a little strange at the beginning, but the more you read the more you like it.

The story The heroine's, Angelica's, father is a gambler and has won Bonheur in a game of cards. Bonheur is a house and plantation that belonged to the hero's stepfather. The hero, Renold, loved him as a father and when he kills himself because he lost his fortune, the hero swears to avenge his death. It seems that Angelica's father cheated at cards, which only made t

Easy read. Didn't captivate me 100% but was still interesting enough to complete. Some times tedious to read. Relationship between Hero and Heroine was good yet both doubtful people who had trust issues. Although they come to love each other feels as though those issues (especially on the hero's part) are never dealt with.

Hoping to exact revenge, Renold Harden, a supposed rogue, seeks out Angelica, the daughter of the man who stole his family’s plantation in hopes of winning her love. An accident forces Renold to change his plans and he ends up saving Angelica’s life before he can marry her in a ceremony she won’t remember.
Renold is extremely jealous and is constantly snapping at anyone who happens to be anywhere near Angelica. The chemistry between Renold and Angelica is felt right away but, like another reader

This was the first book I have read by Jennifer Blake and it has made me intrigued. Silver Tongued Devil was the first book in a 4 part book collection I purchased for my Kindle. Where as it was not like the romance I was used to and took me a bit out of my comfort zone, I did find it hard to put down.

Renold was the the perfect mix of gentlemen and bastard. An alpha male combination I am helpless to fall for. My only qualm with the the book was Angelica; her constant second guessing became anno

This was a good read. Anything by Jennifer Blake is guaranteed to be good. I like the immediate attraction between the two main characters. Renold believes the heroine's family stole a plantation from his family... he seeks the heroine out, placing himself in position to be of assistance to her. Thus begins the plot of revenge heavily laced with seduction. The cat and mouse if fairly intriguing. There's misunderstsanding and inuendo to keep you guessing - are they falling in love? who's playing ...more

Ho-De-Doe! This was one of those reads that just drug me into the story so deep that I felt like I was right there in the thick of EVERYTHING :)

Vivid, touching and a knock-out, Ms Blake has a lot to be proud of with this one. A thrill to read and a pleasure to enjoy, this tale was not what I expected...it was so much more :) *SNAPS* Ms Blake, I think I love you :)

I got this title for free. I read it recently and it was okay. The ending was the best part. In parts of the book, I got lost or fell asleep. It can be very descriptive and I read before bed so that might be part of my problem. Overall, it was good and well written. It is the typical romance novel. I have no qualms with it.

I truly loved the story. I like how the characters play with words and how they see through the surface of the other. The way Blake composed how the two protagonists par with each other is just brilliant. I hope I can read something like the characters in her other stories as well. It's truly mind-boggling! 5 out of 5 from me.
