I had the pleasure of meeting Dori Sanders in 1995 when she spoke at an event at the Huntsville Public Library. She was a delight to meet. Her book, Clover, is wonderfully written. She has done a wonderful job of getting into the mind of a 10-year-old child who has just lost her father. Here is an excerpt from the inside book cover:

I found this to be a sweet, simple book telling of the forced-upon relationship between child and step-mother. Though I'm still unsure as to the audience, I feel this sensitive book would be enjoyed by anyone from 'tweenaged to adult. Since it was short in length, it lacked the depth that might have made it even more compelling (as its jacket promised), yet the story of an African American child and a white woman was a tender one, and worth the read nonetheless. This book was confusing, but had a good moral behinf it. It was confusing because the little girl's, Clover,father died and in the the book they ket on doing flashbacks with her and her father. I had to re- read some of the things again and again but I finally got used to the script it was written in. The book Clover is about a ten-year old African American gilr living with her white stepmother after her father dies in an accident. It shows all the hardships and good time the two of them go through and also deals with the theme of prejudice. the book Clover was about a little african american named Clover. her dad died the day he married Clover's step mom who Clover had only met once. The step moms name is sara kate and she is white. so their family doesn't welocme sara kate in very well. it's intresting to see how Clover and her stepmom start to get along and grow close to each other. the book was ok, nothing very exciting happened in it but it was intresting to read aout a little girl's life.
Heard Dori speak at PLA in Charlotte NC on 3/31/00. She told some great stories including one about an elderly lady who's daughter is horrified to learn that a Meals on Wheels volunteer type has stolen all her mother's "heirlooms" which the daughter herself had no interest in, and the mother could care less about the theft but appreciated the personal attention she got from the volunteer as opposed to the daughter's bossy phone calls from afar.
Though I wasn't blown away, I liked Dori Sanders' writing better than that of many other local authors. Her prose is charmingly simple, which is appropriate since the narrator is a 10-year-old girl. Some of the dialog is a bit awkward, and the novel's structure is rambling at times. However, I liked the honest portrayal of prejudice within the African-American community--definitely not PC.
The book clover is a good book. The book is about a girl's father who gets maried to a white women (He's African American). On their way back from the wedding they get in to a car crash and the father dies. The girl Clover is forced tolive with this white women that she knows nothing about. The book talks a lot about race and family.
This book was okay. Now that I've had to actually think about it, there were few plots and character stories. It ended on a flat note. You did see the progression of the relashionship of the step-mother and daughter and the step-mother and her sister-in-law. Not really recommended, but it was written nicely.
This was a simple read from the eyes of 8-year-old Clover, a precocious black girl whose father married a white woman and was soon thereafter killed in a car wreck. Clover's story tells how she and her stepmom create a life for themselves after her father's death and the acceptance of a white woman into a black family. Very good story line. Highly recommended.
To me this book was confusing and hard to understand. Afterawhile it only kept me half entertained. All together the book was okay, and i would suggest it to anyone who likes that ime period, but other than that, i dont think that it was that good of a book.
A bittersweet story about the relationship that develops between a precocious little black girl (Clover) and her white stepmother (Sara Kate) after tragedy has dramatically changed both of their lives. A quick read with likable, colorful characters.
I thoughout this book was pretty good. It was really sad in the beginning but i liked how it turned out. I also like how Sara Kate raises Clover and they finally build a relationship between each other.

I'm disappointed that I didn't like this book more. I read a wonderful article about Dori Sanders in an old Gourmet magazine, and it made me want to read this book. Reviewers compared the character of Clover (a 10 year old black girl raised by her white step mother after her father dies) to Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird and Will Tweedy in Cold Sassy Tree. This is one of the most memorable books I read in my highschool days. I still remember it. A great infusion of diversity.
Poignant, moving story of a black girl being raised by her white stepmother after her father dies the day after his wedding.
I laughed more than anything through this book, I would have loved to gotten to know the characters better.
Probably best suited to middle school students - loved this 'coming of age' story.
A story of strangers overcoming grief and prejudice, and struggling to become a family.
This was a great book. Delightful. For the longest time I thought it was set in the 1950's, but it's actually the 1980's.
