Let's be clear on this : There are dick jokes, and there's no hiding the fact that the author is extremely sarcastic. Some readers expect a book to be "firm and easy to understand : humor is too muddy a writing topic", and I suppose I understand that, as some people just lack the ability to read tone in literature. That being said...
OMFG, GTFO & GO DIAF!!! Ahem. I suppose I should be more mature about my opinions, so here goes : I don't like people who lack a sense of humor. I think that the...more

Robert Brockway, a columnist and blogger for Cracked.com and webmaster of iFightRobots.com. has produced one of the most fascinating and downright terrifying books it has ever been my (mis)fortune to run across. Everything Is Going to Kill Everybody: The Terrifyingly Real Ways the World Wants You Dead, a collection of his well-researched essays on Cracked.com, presents the thousand-and-one ways in which the modern world not only can render us and, perhaps, every other form of complex life on the...more
Up until now I've had a sort of rule that I imposed on myself. I didn't star-reveiw books that were written by people I know. This is an extremely easy rule to follow as the number of people I know that have published books can be counted on one hand (and if I'm counting the number of people I actually care about, the hand could have lost a finger in some sort of industrial machinery type accident and you'd still have an accurate count).
But this book changes everything, because Robert's wife is...more

I couldn’t finish the book, the level of misinformation was intolerable. Looking into the claims of just one of Brockway’s examples, that a genetically modified form of the bacteria K. Planticola almost escaped from the lab and killed every living plant on earth (and consequently, every living animal as well), reveals that the claim is rubbish. However, a quick review of the incident illustrates how certain pseudo-scientific claims are propagated.

I am trying to read this book but I don't know if I'll be able to finish. I am interested in learning about these things that might, almost, and nearly-did kill me or prevent me from being born. But the humor is too over-the-top and outrageous for me, bordering on being crude sometimes.
Example: Stanislav Petrov averted nuclear war and all the author can gush about are the man's balls. If I wanted to spend my time listening to (or in the case of this book, reading about) testicles used as a euphe...more

Some very interesting content, which is what kept me reading and the only reason it gets 1 star instead of negative 5. Beside that, the book was garbage. 75% of the book was dick jokes, and the rest had some sort of sick sex analogy tied to it. The author writes with the maturity of a 14 year old schoolboy. I found myself constantly annoyed by his obnoxious behavior and foul mouth and language. There were a few funny parts, but it was probably about 1 page in 100 that you would find those. If I...more
Four and a half stars.
Oh my god, we're all going to die!*
*Eventually. Somehow.
This book covers a range of topics from things which almost wiped out humanity/life on earth to things that might do so in the future. It's written with a lot of humor and in the tone of your local newscast (2 flakes of snow = WINTER BLAST 2010).
Some of the things that almost killed us were pretty unnerving. There was the Russian, who, at the height of the Cold War had to decide within seconds that despite what the com...more

Used as an aid to cure my insomnia. Who knew I could fall asleep while reading a book about how an asteroid hurtling towards Earth to wipe out humanity would put me to sleep. But it did. Sections of the book were entertaining and some were even reasonably concerning about a coming apocalypse. I think the author would have been better served focusing more in depth on a few on the more probable scenarios instead of trying to cover every possible end of days he could think up. If it was supposed to...more
A great read, but not for the paranoid. I'm not worried about armageddon, but this book scared the crap out of me. It's not a matter of when, but how and what. There are ways that the Earth, and the people on it, want everybody to die that I was not even aware of. And, if you look at the books I have listed here, I am clearly fascinated by the apocalypse! The author does a great job at presenting everything through humor, although foul mouthed, it proves in the face of utter annihilation all you...more
A book titled like this has so much potential but this one falls short. The core premise is solid. The author takes a look at a number of different ways that science says are legitimate extinction events for humans. The information is presented in a "light science" style so that it is understandable to anyone no matter their scientific background.
However, I can't recommend this book. Apparently the author wrote it for frat boys who think nothing is funnier or cooler than random penis jokes and...more

Recommends it for:
fans of Maddox and/or Tucker Max, apocalypse enthusiasts
This book is pretty much what would happen if Tucker Max or Maddox were to write a book about the legitimate science of how the human race could die out. If you are, accordingly, a fan of that type of humor (the author himself actually writes for cracked.com, if that's further indication), you'll enjoy this. If you find it offensive/annoying, then you should pass up this book, which is, self-admittedly, "dick jokes about cutting-edge science." I love science and I like that sort of sense of humo...more
A lot of good and interesting information about things that are going on in the world of science that could end life as we know it. And the author really adds a sense of wonder that demonstrates the mind-boggling ways we have managed to avoid total disaster. It definitely puts life in perspective. The downside of this book is that the tone is humorous and melo-dramatic, quirky, cynical and funny; but about halfway through the book, the overuse of the quirky funny gets gets rather annoying. I got...more
Well. I was hesitant to start this book because I thought it would be terrifying. And it was, in a way. See, this book is about, just as the title says, how pretty much everything can kill anyone. Luckily, I'm not a conspiracy freak and while Final Destination 2 made me look at some things a different way, I do with more of a "ooh, that could happen. Oh well, hopefully it won't!" mentality. So this book wasn't that scary for me, but it certainly was interesting. The author is matter-of-fact and...more
I think the introduction says it all with this quote: "intense fear mongering and creative swearing".
In the book, the author discusses the myriad ways that life on Earth might end-contagions, weather, genetic manipulation-even robotic overthrow and does so in a manner that is hilarious. Any idea for destruction of our planet was taken to the nth degree. Brockway seems to revel in the fear mongering and the bona-fide research set aside the ridiculous notions by actually including the research da...more

Ahhh, a book chock full of comedic fear mongering at its best, written by the Armageddon loving Robert Brockway of cracked.com, who, in a way, reminds me of my grandmother, though she’s usually only freaking out about her hardwood floors and Brockway is more concerned with the bigger, planet annihilating, picture.
The best kinds of books, in my opinion anyway, are the kinds that make you laugh and learn all at the same time. Brockway’s well researched book does exactly that, though I think that...more

Hell yeah, Cracked writers. I've been meaning to read this for some time but hadn't quite got around to it for a while. Since I finally finished both Gravity's Rainbow and the Science book I've had kicking around, I consulted my Goodreads to-read section and landed on this. I was almost surprised CPL had it- it seems too cutting edge and awesome for them. But had it they did, and it got shipped to my location within a day of reserving it, and I have finished it within a day after that.

This book is so freaking awesome that I'd buy all my friends a copy if I wasn't poor. And cheap. Was it sarcastic? Absolutely. Was it vulgar? Check. Was it laugh-out-loud-and-almost-pee-your-pants HILARIOUS? Yes! By far some of the funniest essays I've ever read in my life -- also, downright terrifying. Some people may think that paranoid chicken-shits like me should avoid this book, but honestly we are the ones who need to read this stuff the most. It reminds us that humor is what binds Man to...more
Brockway summed up this book for me, himself, in one line..."Of course, this is all in a book about intense fearmongering and creative swearing, so perhaps the viewpoint of this authour should be taken with a grain of salt."
Most of the stuff discussed is definitely "intense fearmongering". Just when you start to get scared, it goes over the top and brings you back down. And, yes, the other key element of the book is "creative swearing", which had me rolling more than a few times.

WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!
Ok you knew that... but according to this book its going to be a rather interesting and painful affair!
"everything in here will kill you and everyone love in various way horrible ways, and there's not much you can do about it but laugh. Or void your bowels and call your mom."
Nice!
I have a feeling that the author suffers from some form of ADHD but then again to write something like this it would almost be a requirement!

An absolutely wonderful read from a cracked.com author. You cant expect anything else from these guys. Hilarious take on the dangers our world faces from both external and internal forces. It makes the apocalypse seem like a song and dance event. Even though the tone of the book is light it carries with it many facts which provides a good amount of material to further research. Must read for all conspiracy theorists, cracked fans, science fiction lovers and generally crazy people. Thumbs up!
This book is obviously meant to be a tongue in cheek representation of worst case scenarios. It does a good job. I found it funny, entertaining and mildly disturbing. Some sections are a little long winded but overall a good read in the typical style of cracked.com writers. A decent select bibliography at the end just to prove that the author hasn't made it all up and something to point you in the right direction for further reading if you are interested in a particular topic.

This book just gave me a bunch of things to be scared about. Some of them I knew before, but some of them I never gave much though until now.
Of course, this book is supposed to be humorous and I did laugh hysterically at a few remarks (most of the book I chuckled though), but if there's a tiny bit of truth to some of the things mentioned in this book then I've lost all hope for the survival of human kind in the next 100-200 years.
All in all, I recommend this book! *thumbsup

Read this. Panic. Then take a deep breath and read "Bug Out" by Scott Williams. Realize that all the best laid plans of mice and men can't defend you from much of anything in Brockway's book. Panic again. Share the details behind your terror with the world to (1)feel superior in your knowledge of how deadly existence is and (2)drag your friends, family, and co-workers into despair with you so the experience isn't so lonely.
Despite its hyperbolizing (and a few factual inaccuracies that I recognized only because I've studied neurophysiology), this was some fun food for thought. A quick read offering up plenty of laughs, much in the style of Cracked.com, for which the author is a contributor and editor. It was moreover a wonderful and accessible way to learn about a whole host of recent scientific advances, both terrifying and incredible.
Loved the premise- a sarcastic and pseudo-fearmongering look at all the things that could wipe out humanity from asteroid strikes to killer robots gone wild, hypercanes to genetically-engineered diseases. But the book is 70% dick jokes. About science. Who even knew that was possible? (Apparently I am not the target audience, because it got old after about ten pages. But I still read the whole thing.)
This was, hands down, the single funniest and most terrifying thing I have ever read, no lie. Seriously, when I was done reading it, I had to Google some of the threats Brockway described in the book, to see how much he might have been exaggerating. Turns out? Not much.
If you're looking to laugh until you cry and then not be able to sleep ever again, then this is the book for you.
If you're looking to laugh until you cry and then not be able to sleep ever again, then this is the book for you.
Funny. Terrifying. Vulgar. Terrifyingly vulgar. And occasionally quite offensive. Still interesting and engaging enough to hold my attention for an afternoon.
From p.229: "this is all in a book about intense fear-mongering and creative swearing, so perhaps the viewpoint of this author should be taken with a grain of salt."
That about sums it up.
While I thoroughly enjoy Robert Brockway's articles on Cracked.com, this book, informative though it may be, fell flat on most levels for me. It just wasn't all that funny - tossing in a "@&$#" here and there just doesn't cut it. I think Mr. Brockway unfortunately took writing for a slightly different audience to the wrong extreme here. The articles here seemed a lot more forced and constrained than his work on Cracked, when it really should've been the opposite.
