This is a non-fiction account by Paulsen about his first encounters with sailing. Having little to no knowledge about the sport, he buys a boat and teaches himself to sail-well, sort of. When a small storm rolls in, his boat is almost lost to sea and he battles for several days to figure out where he is and how to get home.
The book follows several similar stories of the wonders and frights of his sea adventures. Paulsen writes in a way that it is hard to not feel right there with him. More...

Caught by the Sea is the memoir of Gary Paulsen's early experiences sailing solo on the Pacific. Both funny and beautiful, this book should appeal to readers of Paulsen's novels.
The storytelling is somewhat uneven--we jump from a detailed experience to a glossing-over without any real differentiation--but the language is beautiful and all the stories are engaging. Most importantly, Paulsen's experiences made me want to go to sea myself, even More...

Splash! Gary didn't know what's coming next. It was a matter of life or death. Only seven years old, having chicken pox,and smuggled on a troop ship trying to get to the Philippines. I thought he was going to die because he was swimming in shark infested waters. Yet making it alive to shore he lives there for a while. Caught by the sea by Gary Paulsen telling about his life on boats. Gary was glad he made it alive. Later he moved to Califorina.
Then he took the same journey as he More...

a great introductry book from Gary Paulsen. He is clearly a great story teller and has written many books. The theme is generally around sailing, ocean, nautical, etc. I can't wait to get to some of his more complex stories. This was an autobiography about his first personal encounters with sailing.

I read this book to check it out for my students. It is a non-fiction book, but I don't think I have any students who would read it and enjoy. The author wrote some nice descriptive paragraphs about the sea. He had some exciting things to write about but they were very short--maybe a page or two.

This book definately wasn't my favorite. It seemed like he was eager to get the book over with. His exciting moments only lasted several pages at the most. It really didn't capture my attention. Although, I have never personally sailed, so maybe that is my problem.

This was a really short, slightly odd book, but I still liked it. Mostly Gary Paulen's descriptions about his love for the sea and how boats come alive. I wish the second-to-last chapter had actually been the last, though; it seemed a lot more of a fitting ending.

Read to "check out" for my students. Not as promising as Paulsen's WOODSONG (this, from a "Mermaid"....). Will offer it, tho personally, I found it dry for a "sailing story."

Super fast read. I think the author could have done a better job with the story - it seemed to jump around a bit too much.

Paulsen, of Hatchet fame, sets out to explore his love of the sea and the many adventures he has had sailing. His spare proses makes readers feel as if they were along for the ride. His adventures make you wonder how he survived, and make you fall in love with the sea yourself. A great way to get Hatchet readers into non-fiction.

I received this book from a friend as a "Pass Along Book". I liked it better than I thought I would. In this nonfiction book, Gary Paulsen tells of his adventures on the sea and his life harrowing experiences. It's not as good as his other books, but it did keep my interest, and I enjoyed it. It is only 100 pages and can be read in one afternoon.

I thought this was the most interesting biography book I have ever read.It is an okay book not perfect but it is still good.It is a biography book that I would recommend to read for one of your biography books on goodreads.

This book is worth reading just for the part where Paulsen is trying to teach himself how to use sails on a lake only to make himself a menace to every other boater in sight. Paulsen can be hysterically funny when he's relating his mishaps.

Read "Voyage of the Frog" after you read this one; you will clearly see Paulsen using his own experience from "Caught by the Sea".

I really enjoyed hearing of Gary Paulsen's adventures at sea. I would like to hear more of his stories.
