A fabulously exciting story with a happy ending, begins with a little boy called Billy who stumbles across an old derelict sweetshop, which is renovated and transformed by a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey. The illustrations by Quentin Blake marvelously compliment the story. Who would have thought of such a sweet, bizarre and amusing idea of three animals living inside an old sweetshop, who set up a window cleaning company? How utterly imaginative of Roald Dahl!

Dan Billy dengan mudahnya langsung bersahabat dengan ketiga, selain ketiganya memang juga sedang membutuhkan pertolongan Billy sebagai manager untuk mengatasi masalah kelaparan mereka dengan mencari pelanggan untuk membersikan kaca jendela mereka.

Tanpa diduga datanglah utusan dari Duke of Hampshire yang sudah lima tahun mencari tak menemukan pembersih jendela yang sanggup. Karena rumahnya yang besar dan megah seperti istana yang memiliki 677 jendela. Maka tanpa berpikir lagi berangkatlah 4 sekawan tersebut ke Hampshire House yang terletak dibalik bukit. Duke of Hampshire begitu terkejut karena yang datang adalah Billy seorang anak kecil dan Si Jerapah, Si Pelly, dan si Kera dan sempat meragukan kemampuan keempatnya. Tapi Si Jerapah bertugas sebagai tangga, si Pelly bertugas menggatikan fungsi ember dengan air didalam paruhnya, dan si Kera sambil memanjat leher si Jerapah dia membersihkan jendela-jendela tersebut sambil sesekali menggunakan air yang dibawa si Pelly.

Pada saat mereka membersihkan jendela-jendela tersebut, mereka melihat seorang pencuri yang merampok perhiasan-perhiasan Duchess Henrieta istri Duke of Hampshire yang juga seorang penyanyi opera. Setelah melaporkannya ke Duke of Hampshire bertindaklah tiga bersahabat berusaha menangkap si pencuri, tertangkap oleh Si Pelly dengan memasukan ke paruhnya. Tapi Pencuri berhasil menembak paruh si Pelly. Akhirnya Polisi datang dan membawa pencuri (Si Cobra:perampok licin dan paling cerdik) tersebut yang tidak berhasil membawa barang curiannya.

Sebagai imbalan karena telah berhasil menangkap si pencuri,maka Duke of Hampshire memberikan tempat tinggal gudang jerami terbesar dengan pemanas central, pancuran untuk mandi dan segala macam kebutuhan makanan terutama kepada Si Jerapah ( jenis Geraneous yang hanya makan bunga-bunga merah jambu dan ungu dari pohon tinkle-tinkle), Si Kera dengan kebun pohon kacang raksasa jenis Walnut dan Si Pelly ditunjukkan sungai besar diseberang Hampshire House yang penuh dengan ikan salmon terbaik diseluruh Eropa. Dan Billy, dia mendapatkan rumah kayu The Grubber impiannya.

Buku yang bagus karena kesederhanaan ceritanya, tidak berlebihan atau muluk-muluk tapi memberikan pelajaran moral yang cukup buat yang membacanya. Paling suka dari buku ini adalah nama-nama permen di Toko Permen The Grubber, aneh, lucu tapi unik. seperti ini nih: Gumtwizzler dan Fizzwinkle dari Cina, Frothblower dan Spitsizzler dari Afrika, Tummyytickler dan Gobwangle dari Kepulauan Fiji dan Liplicker dan Plushnugger dari Negeri Matahari Malam. Dan banyak lagi...sepertinya Wooooeeeennnyyyaaakkk deh. Sayang aku gak suka yang manis-manis....huehuehuehuehue.

Three entrepreneurial critters team up with a sweet-tooth little boy to wash windows and happen to bust a criminal in the middle of a burglary. Typical Roald Dahl daftery.

The story itself was 3 stars, but Hugh Laurie's narration made it extra fun. There's something about his voice that is perfectly suited to Dahl's nonsense candy names.

Note: I rarely give a novella 5 stars, so when I do, trust me when I say it's good.

This took only a few minutes to finish but it's very magical and exciting. The book is told from the point of view of a young boy named Billy.

Billy always come by to check on The Grubber, an old, abandoned sweet shop. Every time he does, he would see the FOR SAIL (for sale) sign.

Another novella (around 70 pages) by Roald Dahl with Quentin Blake's humorous illustrations.

The 6yo loved this. A thoroughly enjoyable tale of helping others and being rewarded for good deeds. There's nothing difficult about it and certainly fits into a more expected children's tale - albeit highly original. It has a slight hat tip to Dahl's Chocolate Factory, which nice, and pushing that book up our tbr list.

No female characters, but the male protagonists are fairly gender neutral, so I'm cool...more

This is an interesting book which I really enjoyed reading to my children. Its about a boy who wanted a sweet shop of his own and the events that follow his dream. The story begins by telling us about a boy use to pass by an old sweet shop near his house, which was closed down only to be sold of to a window cleaning company. I imagine myself curled up in a squishy bed surrounded by a trio of tiny-tots. As I read aloud, their attention is captured. The scruffy l’il boy stops tugging his sister’s pigtails. She in turn stops sticking her tongue out and making rude noises. Another short, well illustrated book by Roald Dahl. It's about a kid who after seeing an old closed sweet shop in his neighborhood gets the desire to own it and convert it into the most beautiful sweet shop of his own. Setibanya di tempat itu, mereka mulai membersihkan kaca, dengan si Jerapah yang menjadi tangganya. Si Pelikan menjadi embernya, dan si Monyetlah yang menjadi tukang bersih-bersihnya. Sebelumnya, mereka sempat membantu Duke mengambilkan ceri-ceri yang besar yang tidak bisa diambil oleh tukang kebun. Billy masuk ke dalam mulut pelikan lalu memetikkan ceri untuk sang Duke yang sudah tua dan galak itu.

Dengan kerjasama tim yang baik, seluruh kaca di Hampshire House berhasil dibersihkan. Bahkan kaca-kaca di lantai teratas rumah itu yang tidak pernah bisa dibersihkan oleh orang-orang selama empat puluh tahun.

Ketika membersihkan kaca itu, mereka menemukan seorang pencuri bersenjata sedang beraksi di salah satu ruangan yang diketahui adalah milik Duchess. Sang pencuri mengambil perhiasan-perhiasan berharga itu, dan hendak kabur ketika tiga sekawan itu memergokinya. Mereka pun terlibat petualangan menangkap si pencuri yang unik dan sangat imajinatif. Setelah sang pencuri tertangkap, mereka pun mendapatkan hadiah yang sangat mereka inginkan dari Duke of Hampshire sendiri.

Ceritanya cukup menarik, meskipun biasa-biasa saja. Imajinasi Roald Dahl masih luar biasa, tetapi ada beberapa yang tidak terlalu saya sukai. Hhhmm... Saya bingung sendiri jadinya... Lumayanlah untuk dibaca ketika senggang dan nggak mau mikir pusing-pusing. Apalagi, di akhir cerita muncul permen-permen Willy Wonka yang aneh-aneh dan lezat-lezat itu. Sampai-sampai saya bermimpi memakan Wangdoodle Raksasa dari Australia, permen lezat yang di setiap bungkusnya berisi stroberi besar dan matang tersembunyi dibalik lapisan coklat yang renyah! Yummy... Saya jadi kangen stroberi yang besar dan manis itu. Nggak seperti stroberi di Indonesia yang kecil-kecil dan asamnya bukan main, di luar negeri, stroberinya besar-besar dan manis meskipun masih sedikit asam.

Oh, yang bikin agak mengganjal sebenarnya terjemahannya. Mungkin karena disini banyak sekali istilah-istilah yang sulit diterjemahkan ke bahasa Indonesia, maka digukanlah kata-kata aslinya. Tapi, kalau anak kecil baca sendiri tanpa bimbingan orangtua, dia pasti bingung sekali tuh. Yeah, itulah gunanya orangtua ya. Membimbing anaknya...

Pernah melihat bapak-bapak pembersih kaca di gedung yang tinggi? Berbekal tali dan elevator, mereka bertaruh nyawa membersihkan kaca jendela gedung-gedung pencakar langit.

This story begins with the introduction of a little boy that lives next to an old shut-down building that used to be a candy shop. Then one day he sees that the building has been cleaned up and now has a sign on it "Ladderless Window Cleaning Company". The cleaning company consists of a pelican, a monkey, and a giraffe. And the little boy is whisked away on a window cleaning adventure that in the end makes all his dreams come true.

This is the bizarre and delightful tale of an unlikely trio, a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey all in the business of window cleaning. No need for a messy ladder thanks to the tall giraffe. R just read this book all by himself last night. He loved it, and is getting his confidence up to read longer books. I read the book after he was finished, so I could quiz him to make sure he is reading the details...he is..better than me! He also read the book in about the same amount of time it took me.

For the book itself..it was a super basic story, yet Dahl still is able to throw in so much creativity. Gotta love it--maybe not as much as his longer books though. But a wonderful story. R sum...more

I don't know about anyone else, but the older I get the more I find that books aimed at "grown-ups" have a distressing lack of giraffes with extending necks and pelicans with retracting beaks that clean windows and sing silly songs with a monkey. Grown older? Certainly. Grown wiser? Possibly. Grown up? No thank you. This one's pretty tame compared to other Dahl stories. Definitely meant for a younger audience. Nothing evil or creepy or bizarre. Just a sweet story about a giraffe, a pelican, and a monkey who start a window-washing business, and a little boy named Billy who wants to own a candy store. I gave this book 4 stars because when I read this book it was interesting and had poems, riddles, and the boy called me help people, and animals with their problem.

This story is about a boy called me that goes telling poems and riddles to people and animals. he travels to places with a girrafe, and a pelly. They help people with their prombles. AS well with animals and their problems.And this book is about fun, dreams and friendship coming true.

The Giraffe and the Pelly and me by Roald Dahl was an unusual book because many unrealistic things happened throughout. Things such as the richest man in england coming to see this boy called Billy and finding a group of the title characters. I would recommend this book definitely to those interested in a getaway from this horrible world of ours.

The little boy in the stoy imagines that there is a monkey, a pelican and a giraffe living there, running a window-cleaning business.
