This makes the third illustrated Hansel and Gretel I've read. First, there is the 1985 Caldecott Honor version adapted by Rika Lesser and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinksy. Next, there is the very recent version narrated by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Jen Corace. I can honestly say they each bring something different and valuable to the story! I'm at a loss to really pick a favorite.

The telling in this story is very much like that of the Lesser/Zelinsky version with a few minor differences....more

I think this is a must for children as it has been passed down from generation to generation. It is a classic fairytale that captures the children's imagination through fantasy, wonderment and adventure. The main characters in the story are of course brother and sister Hansel and Grethal. From starting off living with their innocent, vulnerable stepfather and the "wicked stepmother" the story develops as the children embark on a journey filled with suspense and fantasy. Talking duck's, the house...more

Summary: I really enjoyed reading this classic historical fiction story. This was the classic story of Hansel and Gretel that most people know about, with a few different turns. This was the traditonal story of Hansel and Gretel, but they turned the step mom into "the woman" in this story. Gretel is still Hansels partner. This story does not mention god. It does not mention Gretel crying, like the others. Kids are in the forest, but they are just tiny figures in an alien threatening landscape. T...more

Hansel and Gretel
Retold by Anthony Browne

Anthony Brown touchingly retells the story of a brother (Hansel) and sister (Gretel) whose penniless parents decide to abandon their children deep in the woods. Hungry and desperate the two children stumble upon a house made out of sweet treats and fall victim to a witch who entraps and eats children. Eventually the children are able to escape, steal the witch’s riches and return home to their remorseful father who tells them of their mother’s death and t...more

Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Gimm, illustrated by Paul Galdone (1982), is a tale about a brother and sister taken into the woods by their father and step-mother. The family “…were always very poor and had very little to live on.” The children heard about the plot to leave them in the woods. The first time Hansel and Gretel are taken into the woods, Hansel leaves a trail or pebbles to find their way home. On the second trip into the woods, Hansel leaves a bread trail. This ISBN, 0531040623, also applies to the edition I read & am reviewing, illustrated by Anthony Browne, in 1981 pub. by Julia Macrae Books, a division of Franklin Watts Ltd.

Browne sets one of my favorite tales in modern times and brings to the deliciously scary illustrations an artist's sensibility that gives me fresh goosebumps. I would not read this at bedtime, despite the happy ending. But I did find it wonderful and I recommend it to anyone who has gotten a kick out of these brave &...more

Hansel and Gretel tells the familiar story of two children who are abandoned by their heartless stepmother and gutless father, taken in by a child-eating witch, and ultimately escape to return home to a happy reunion with their widowed father....

“Hansel & Gretel” is a folktale. The story is complete with contrasts, plot, characters, and motif.

Contrast – There are many contrasts in the story. There is the witch who is old and the children – Hansel and Gretel – are young. There is the father who is powerless and spineless and the stepmother who is mean, cold, and calculating. There is the gingerbread house that contrasts give and take (the children take the treats from the house and in doing so must give their life).

Plot – The plot...more

Ada beberapa cerita klasik lainnya,...more

Hansel and Gretel are a brother and sister who are left in the woods by their parents. The kids got hungry and searched for food. They found a house made of candy, sweets, and frosting. Why wouldn't they go eat at this house?! Because its owned by a witch who is trying to eat them. However, Hansel and Gretel do not know that and enter the house. They make their escape from the witch, and take her money and leave. They return home to find their father who tells them of their wicked stepmother's d...more

Snow White, Rap...more

Didala...more

Hansel and Gretel is such a classic fairy tale I think all children should have the chance to read it at least once during their childhood. This story encourages creativity and imagination as a brother and sister embark on a journey away from home. Hansel and Gretel navigate their way through their obstacles and although some parts of the story are a little darker, it still ends happily. This book can be incorporated into many activities within the classroom.

selesai baca dongeng-dongengnya semua, dan all and all, I still like HC Andersen far better.

This is not the actual version I read of Hansel and Gretel, but I could not find it on Goodreads. The book I read was illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky and retold by Rika Lesser. I picked this folktale because it is such a classic, however, I couldn't remember the story. I thought this was another extremely dark version of the tale. The illustrations lacked bright colors and the ending seemed a bit scary for children.

This fairytale is a timeless story. I remember my mother reading this to me 18 years ago, as I laid in bed and went to sleep, and I remember her telling me that my grandmother read it to her. I love the creative side that it brings out in kids, and I like the perspective taken on this novel. I think that kids or adults can enjoy this book and even in years to come kids can still read and love this book.

The book is a portrait orientation. The typed face is normal and the position of it varies. Also, the text is framed by the illustrations. The colors are mostly the same throughout the story. The illustrations are sketched and very detailed. Most of the illustrations are double page spreads. The interplay between the text and the illustrations I would say is enhancing.

This book has been retold many times, so there are various versions. This one is not as gruesome as the others, which leads me to believe it is more fit for the classroom library. It is a very traditional folktale that has been sent down from generation to generation. It really captures the imagination of the children and builds suspense along the way.

I don't know how many times I've read this story, but it's definitely a classic. We found this edition at the bookswap at our local library and figured we'd read it again. This is an older version, where the witch ends up in the oven, and although it may be too scary for younger kids, our girls still liked the story, especially since it ends well.

"Hansel and Gretel" wasn't that deep of a story. Two kids escape from their parents, only to end up prisoners of a cannibalistic witch who lives in a cottage made of sweets. They escape the witch and run back home, where their father accepts them back with open arms (the mother died during their imprisonment). The story was a little gruesome and harsh. And I remember reading this kids book when I was a child!

The familiar fairy tale that won the Caldecott honor award. Hansel and Gretel are left by their parents an end up at an old ladies house that us made out of the most delectable treats. She tries to eat them, but fails due to the children's wit and cleverness. This book has great illustrations/ visuals for any age.

Hansel and Gretel navigate the woods and defeat a witch to reunite with their father. This is a darker version of the tale than in other sources so I wouldn't reccommend this for a young child. The artwork is lifelike and the renditions of the witch's house were very well done. The color palette for the book was a lot of earth tones giving this book a timeless feel.

The illustrations are spectacular here! It turns out that the illustrator, Paul O. Zelinsky, had been fascinated with a painting his grandmother had painted of Hansel and Gretel. His illustrations are detailed old-school affairs. The text is true to the original Grimm story.

This is my kind of story.

I grew up with these stories and it was really fun to get to read them again as an adult. I had forgotten how scary the story of Hansel and Gretel can be when you're a kid! I really enjoyed the story and it's message. I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to reconnect with their childhood.

Published 1971 Delacorte Press NY, NY The book that I had was from the Crandall Library Glens Falls, NY. This book was illustrated by Arnold Lobel with no ISBN#, therfore I could not find it on goodreads. Pictures in this book were pencil drawings and dreary. I found the story to be a little scary.
Mikailah Shackleford
I have always enjoyed this story and the illustrations in this book are very descriptive. This would be a good story to read around halloween and you could relate it to a classroom project or activity. I think every child should read this fairy tale as it has been passed down generations.
