Originally published on my blog here in April 2000.

The second collection of Don Camillo stories continues to be charming, though it is not as good as the first. The limitations of the chosen subject begin to become apparent, and some of the stories from Don Camillo and the Prodigal Son are little more than repetitions of ones from The Little World of Don Camillo. The altar crucifix plays a rather smaller role than it does in the first book, which is a pity (though the voice of Christ is barely p

the series of Don Camillo is the village priest & his adversary is Peppone, the communist Mayor and how the two deal with sitations that occur within their little village in Italy. The two antagonists stand on either side never shifting from their stance, but yet come togerther in their won ways to keep the peace within. Very humoursly written by Giovanni, a humour that even the most die hard leftists & those of a religious bent of mind will find hard not to agree.

I am only giving this 3 stars because it did not seem up to the wonderfulness of the first book, "The Little World of DOn Camillo" or the stories in "Don Camillo's Dilemma." However, any time spent with DOn Camillo and Peppone in the Po River valley is time well spent.

Giovanni Guareschi's short stories set in a community in the Po River Valley after WWII describe the world as seen through the eyes of the local priest, Don Camillo and the Communist mayor of the town, Peppone.
An old classic worth re-reading in today's world.

This was not my favorite Don Camillo book - some of the stories just did not resonate with me - but I still enjoyed it. Worth the read if you can track it down.

He was a journalist, writer, humorist. Along with Giovanni Mosca and Giaci Mondaini he founded the humorous magazine "Candido". He was well know because of the "Don Camillo" series based on the stories about the two main characters: Don Camillo, the priest and Peppone, the communist Mayor.
