What do a baby blue jay, a kitten, a girl, and a baby squirrel have in common?
They are emphatically curious about the world.
They find it difficult to leave the place where they feel safest.
And, eventually, they must all spread their wings and fly.
With his ever-inventive art, Caldecott winner Mordicai Gerstein stretches the boundaries of the traditional picture book, h...more

Told in what seems to be his format of choice lately, dialogue, Gerstien tells three stories of coming of age: that of a baby blue jay, a kitten, and a girl learning to ride her bike. With the three interacting with one another, and obvious language barriers preventing communication, three tellings of the same events course through the pages. There is also a group of squirrels playing michevious observer to most of the events. It ends well with the baby jay learning to fly, but along the way the...more

Leaving the Nest takes place in a backyard, where a baby blue jay, a kitten, a little girl, and a nest of little squirrels all stretch their wings and venture out into the wider world. The story draws attention to the way perception changes depending on the viewer, such as when the squirrel tells the kitten "I'm a dog" or when Baby Jay screeches about giants (humans).

The idea is wonderful, although the text could have flowed better. The story is told entirely through speec...more

This is a cute story about four creatures who are headed out into the world on their own for the very first time, but all at the same time.

A little girl goes out to play on her own, while a baby jaybird leaves his nest and starts to learn to fly. All at the same time, a baby squirrel leaves the tree to tease the jaybird and the kitten escapes into the backyard through an open door.

The four converge on each other in the yard and order is restored after a brief brew-ha-ha...more

Leaving the Nest is about three different groups of animals and one little girl. It is different from a normal children's book because the whole book is written as if the animals were thinking. All the writing is in clouds. It involves a cat, jay birds and squirrels. It is educational because it describes why cats chase birds and squirrels and how birds leave their nests. It also has a deaper meaning of leaving ones nest and trying something new. This would be a great book for preschool- second ...more

a baby blue jay, a young girl, a kitten, and a baby squirrel all stretch their various wings out at the same time in an attempt to gain some independence. The way they all stumble and catch themselves (or with some help) and that their brave efforts result in satisfaction despite the alarming aspects of learning by trial and error, will resonate with young readers.

really well done book about growing up. sounds like a bad joke...a little girl, a kitten, a blue jay chick and a baby tree climbing rodent i can't spell take a leap into the world and find themselves both stronger than they think, and they still they need their mother.
the word ballons are a little disconcerting.

As the baby blue jay, kitten, and little girl 'test their wings and leave the nest', baby squirrel looks on and thinks he will try it too. It looks fun! Yet, the mama always wants to protect their little ones.

Used for "Feathered Friends" -October, 2009.
