I am a big fan of books filled with essays. Non-fiction, short stories are perfect for tossing in your purse and reading whenever the bus is late, or sitting in the doctors office.

These columns are strangely reassuring. They tackle quite a lot of the stupid obsessions that have sprung up around modern urban parenting--everything from un-schooling and attachment parenting to push presents and repetitive story books--with self-deprecating humor and an admission that kids are strangely resilient little critters and don't actually know fashion well enough to know what to expect from us. Gross. I am so done with essays in which parents "confess" to making totally mainstream choices like formula-feeding or letting their kids watch TV as if they're doing something radical. Get out of Park Slope occasionally, guys, the pressure is overwhelmingly coming from the other direction. If I hadn't been stuck on a plane with this book, I'd have put it down after the first chapter.
