No I haven't started drinking to excess...although....
This is actually a quilt pattern and the title of a terrific, new to me author, Clare O'Donohue, part of her cozy series, The Someday Quilts Mysteries. There is nothing like a cozy, and a quilt on a cold and windy night.
Nell Fitzgerald, aspiring artist, beginning quilter, and amateur sleuth, is stood up on her first date with Jesse DeWalt, Police Chief of Archers Rest, the small town where she has relocated and is living wit...more

Nell has just finished her first quilt and it's almost time for her date with the Chief of Police, Jesse Dewalt. As time passes, Nell realizes that Jesse isn't coming and their date has been cancelled without an apologetic phone call. Nell is frustrated but soon finds out the reason for Jesse ditching her. A woman has been found dead in a river.

Author's blogrecommends it for: quilters and their friends and anyone who enjoys a good mystery
Second in the series, A Drunkard's Path takes you to the chilly waters of the Hudson River in January to discover why bodies keep turning up in Archer's Rest. Nell, Eleanor and their quilting circle try to keep up with the local and not-so-local police in finding a killer loose in their tiny riverside community. Art school, coffee shop, quilt shop and police station populate this quick moving story. I'm lingering over the last few chapters because the next installment isn't out yet.

Nell's grandmother, quilt shop owner Eleanor, meets and starts to date Nell's art school teacher, handsome, rich and famous Oliver. But Nell is afraid that he's involved in the unexplained death of a young woman. All the women in Eleanor's quilting group become involved in investigating Oliver's background, but Nell tries to find out about the death, much to the displeasure of the local police chief Jesse, whom Nell is dating.

I enjoyed the book even though I didn't always agree with what the lead character was doing. She's an artist and quilt maker, but she's got the heart of a cop. That causes a great deal of friction between her and the man she's dating who is the local sheriff.
I found the romance parts of the book a little annoying, but the actual mystery and writing style kept my interest.

i thought her first mystery was pretty good and i liked the characters, so i gave this one a try. i didn't like it nearly as much. the pulls in two different directions didn't keep me interested, it just made me frustrated and confused to where she was going. the ending ended up being really convenient. and the story is not really believable. i mean, how many murders can one teeny tiny little town see? the first was good, this one was 'meh', and i won't be reading more if she comes out with ...more

Another quick read and nice little story. I'm getting tired of the main character (Nell's) inability to mind her own business. This wasn't really a murder mystery so much as it was a 'if you jump to a bunch of conclusions, you're gonna find out your wrong and piss people off' story. There's a tiny little bit of character development on some of the supporting 'cast' but not too much. If you want a quick read for the weekend...this could be it.

This novel is about a quilting group who also act as detectives about some murders in their town! The protagonist, Nell, is falling in love with a police officer on the case. There are a few other subplots, too. The stories keep moving. This was an enjoyable book to snuggle up with. I would love to read another in the series.

Nell is trying to date the police chief in a small town. She might have better luck if she could just keep her nose out of his work. Fun to read, Nell is somewhat annoying but her grandmother and the girls from the quilt club are great. Interesting characters and the plot line was stronger than the first book.

I won this book in a draw on Facebook. Saved it as a Christmas present to me. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the characters, and enjoyed getting to know them. I will read other novels by this author.

Women's fiction--plenty of quilting details for that interest group, plus topical theme (in this case: battered women)to add depth. Second in a series--easy to recommend.

Quilters
Loved it!! This is the second book from this author using "Someday quilts" and the character Nell Fitzgerald. Quilting and a mystery...just pure heaven.

It actually deserves more than three stars - but less than 4. I enjoyed the first book in the series, but the main character just really, really annoyed me in this one.

I read this book after enjoying the first someday quilt mystery. this one however, annoyed me more than entertained me. He law-breaking sleuthing bothered me, and the relationships between characters seemed shallow.

A bit far-fetched, but entertained none-the-less.
