An excellent historical novel.

A group of Romans are on a voyage, and their ship is taken over by pirates. One thing leads to another, and to save the honor of a beauteous maiden our lead character becomes one of the pirate band. He has a number of challenges and rises through the ranks, meeting historical figures and falling in love.

Quite a good story.

The story is pretty good in its own right, although somewhat slow moving for modern audiences. But the history is very nice. I learned more vocabulary words from this book than just about any other I can ever remember. Great background reading for fantasy writers.
