Don't get me wrong, I love historical romance but the plot of this novel has been done before. I found it hard to enjoy this novel because I have read several books with the same storyline. In summary, this book is about a naive young woman who falls in love with one of her brother's friends when she was younger at some obscenely young age decides that she is going to marry him one day. Unfortunately, this female protagonists never grows out of her obsession with her brother's best friend and th...more

Story and Writing Style
Missy has had a rather unhealthy—or healthy, depending on how you look at it—obsession with her brother’s best friend, James. Some rather fancy footwork by her own doing had them both tumbled on the ground, arms entwined, and her mouth pressed against his. Ever since then, she hasn’t been able to forget about him…nor has he of her.

Now Missy has flown through a few Seasons making more than a few men unhappy by turning down their proposals, all because of her admiration of J...more

Book 1 in the Elusive Lords Series

Wow. Lord James Rutherford was a sexy, hot mess. He knows, at least, that he’s sexy. It was hard to determine if he knew he was a mess until the very end and then, trust me, he knew. Lady Missy (Milicent) Armstrong is our gracious heroine, who loves James with all her heart despite his nastiness when he tries to drive her away. It was sad...more

Have to admire Beverley Kendall's efforts for her debut book, Sinful Surrender (book one in The Elusive Lords Series). Sinful Surrender tells the story about Thomas Armstrong's sister, Millicent, chasing his best friend, the future Earl of Windmere, James Rutherford. Missy has had a crush on James since he befriended her upon the death of her father when she...more

Beverley Kendall's debut novel, "Sinful Surrender", is amazing! Her knowledge and love of the era and the genre are vividly evident in this sizzling romantic tale. This is true "heart with heat"! When Missy Armstrong was ten years old, she first met her older brother Thomas' best friend, James Rutherford. From that point on, James was the focal point of her world, and he treated her with brotherly affection. Thomas and James were two of a kind, true rogues making their wanton way through the lov...more

I'm having trouble putting into words just how I feel about this book. I admit, at first, I really didn't like it. Throughout the first 80 pages or so, the writing is stilted, the characterization shallow, and the plot uninteresting.

While there remains no clear narrative voice (a personal reading preference of mine) the writing improved dramatically in the second half of the book. You gain more insight into why James is being so obtuse and resistant to the idea of Missy as his wife. Missy gains...more

What a great book. My first by Beverley and will not be the last.
This is a great story about Missy and James. James is Missy's brothers best friend. Missy has always had a crush on James, ever since she was a little girl. Missy has waited for James to have feelings for her and he just does not feel that way. Missy decided she is going to try and seduce James. She kisses him and he pushes her away because she is his best friends sister. She waits, and three years later she tries again, and he br...more

I really wanted to love this book. I absolutely love the plot, but the characters were shallow and to be completely honest, I was never convinced the hero actually fell in love with the heroine. I would classify this book as mild erotica as opposed to romance.

Missy's actions were not reflective of the time period this book was written in, and I think that may have ruined the story for me. Not to mention, the hero and heroine had too many opportunities to be alone.

As for the hero, I need a man I'...more

I wanted to make this review as fair as I could so for the first time ever I took notes while I read. I was irritated to the point where taking notes didn't distract me and that never happens, I couldn't do it for assigned reading at school.

I like to think of myself as a very forgiving reader, whether by design or accident I rarely dislike a book I read.

Missy is the reason I disliked this book, in fact if it weren't in a series and I hadn't wanted to read the next one, it'd be a dnf because of h...more

First of all I'd like to thank GoodReads First Reads and author Beverley Kendall for giving me a chance to read and review Sinful Surrender. I have to admit, I haven't been much of a romance reader in the past few years since getting married. I have all the romance I need. But the longer you're married, the romance starts to..... well you know how it is, ladies!
I was delightfully surprised with Sinful Surrender. The characters were believable and quite likable. I got so involved in the novel tha...more

Millicent Armstrong has gone about her seduction of James Rutherford all wrong. Three years ago, fresh on the marriage market, she literally threw herself on top of him, showing him quite well what she intended for him. James, a good friend of Missy’s brother, Thomas Armstrong, definitely noticed Missy’s newly formed figure, but as any good gentlemen, pushed her away (and made sure his coat hid the front of his pants) before things could go further.

Now, three years later, Missy is getting ready...more

Millicent “Missy” Armstrong yearns for the love of her brother’s good friend, James Rutherford. Missy will do whatever she can to claim him as her own. James has always treated Missy like a younger sister, but as she finally makes her debut into Society, he can no longer deny that she has grown into a very beautiful woman. Lately, he’s been having a very strange reaction to her, one that involves the hardening of a certain area of his anatomy. (think constant cock stand). He can’t give into his...more

Millicent "Missy" Armstrong has been in love with her older brother Thomas's best friend James Rutherford, since she first say him when she was sixteen. James knows about Missy's "crush" and has still been warned away from Missy by Thomas. James is attracted to Missy but knows no good can come of it and so tries to dissuade her by staying away from her. What happens when James is told to not to stay away from her, and instead prove to her, that it's not him she's in love with? Both James and Mis...more

Sinful Surrender is a wonderful first book for the series. Kendall introduces you to the characters in such a descriptive way that you quickly become involved in their lives.

Missy is a young innocent girl who also happens to be in love. A combination that is guaranteed some embarrassing moments. James truly does his best to honor his friendship with Missy’s brother but in the end succumbs to her attempts at womanly wiles.

The story line isn’t shocking but it is well written and will have you fly...more

... enjoyed the book. I'm a HUGE fan of historical romance especially set in England and dealing with Earls, Lords, Ladies etc. However, I find it harder to grasp why marrying for love was such a hard thing to deal with in those days.

It never quite made sense to me in the book why Missy's brother was so against her marrying his best friend. Throughout the book that was the biggest issue - 'don't marry or ruin my sister... you're a rake'....... beyond that the chemistry between James and Missy f...more

I really liked this book. It was so funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I rarely find books that can make me laugh my ass off and cry at the same time. It's hard stuff...hard, hard stuff.

This is the story of Missy and James. James has known Missy since she was a small child, who having recently lost her beloved father, needed the comfort of someone who had the time and patience for her. James was there for Missy, becoming her playmate (even though he was several years older) and caring for...more

After reading A Taste of Desire by Beverley Kendall and enjoying it so much I wanted to read more. I discovered that she's writing what appears to be a series. I couldn't wait to make a trip to the book store so I ordered it on my Kindle and spent a day reading.

I don't know what else to say other than it did not disappoint. I wish I'd realized this was the first book before reading A Taste of Desire but it didn't take a...more

Beverley Kendall's debut novel, "Sinful Surrender", is absolutely fantastic! She has a wonderful knowledge of the era, the costumes, and her humor makes this book a great read. It's the girl chases brother's friend story with all the heat a romance novel delivers. I appreciate Ms. Kendall's use of words since I learned many vocabulary words when I was a teenager. This book is delightful and I can't wait to read more of her books. I know there are many best sellers in Beverley Kendall's future

When James Rutherford’s best friend’s sister Missy has a crush on him, and Thomas orders James to discourage her because he knows what a rake his best friend is, what else can he do but try to convince her to give up on him. Even though he has a hard time keeping his hands off of her, he knows his friend Thomas will beat him senseless if he touches her. Missy Armstrong is in her fourth Season, and she knows what she wants, and that’s James. What follows is a delightful story of frustrated attrac...more

Premise should have been intriguing....Sister falls in love with brother's best friend. Brother doesn't think friend is good enough for sister. Instead got a torturous boring plot. Plot is slow and not all that exciting. Even thought the hero was somewhat spineless for not fighting for our heroine. This story could have been told in 10 pages easily. Disappointed and probably won't pick up another by this author.

I gave this 60 pages but I couldn't get into this. The heroine acted like she was 16 instead of 22. What woman (in any time period) refuses every suitor for a man she hasn't even seen in 4 years and who she has no reason to believe is even interested in her? And the hero? He can't help himself from wanting to lift her skirts. Please. He can't help himself? I want my heroes to have some self-control.

Set in 1852 England the story of Missy Armstrong and James Rutherford. I couldn't relate with the heroine in the story her whole focus was to have sex with the hero, where as the hero was easy to relate to. He was trying to do the right thing and everyone was after him about one thing or the other. The writing style was excellent but the story was to centered around sex for my taste.

A: Kendall's debut work reminds me a LOT of Julia Quinn's Bridgerton books, which is highest praise coming from me. James was, in turn, the protective older-brother, the secretive loner, and the incorrigible rake. I loved him! Missy held her own, transforming from a girl with a youthful crush to a stubborn woman who could hold her own and wanted to take care of herself. There were times when, despite the romance novel aspects, I wasn't sure things would work out for the two main characters, so t...more

It started off alright, but at about the half way point, when the whole thing with Victoria started, I completely lost interest. Picking it up again, when I needed something short to read and I only had a hundred or so pages left, I didn't find any of the characters really sympathetic, and the resolution was rather blah.

I really enjoyed this book and could understand the way Missy felt. There's very few girls who haven't fallen for their brother's friend. I cried when Missy cried and even when she didn't. The only thing I didn't like was towards the end; it felt a bit rushed but overall it was beautifully written and will be moving onto Beverley Kendall's new novel.
