I'm slowly working my way through Dons' complete works, one or two books a year. This collection of short stories (some with autobiographical elements) and portraits is just as good as the rest. Dons (1903-93) doesn't really fit any of the categories that can be used to classify his contemporaries among Danish authors (he was a gay cosmopolitan aesthete, had his roots in what passed for landed gentry in the early 20th century and didn't write about things with "social relevance"), so he has been ...more
