The Thousand Orcs (Hunter's Blades #1)
"Barbaric hordes of blood-hungry humanoids sweep across the Spine of the World, and thousands of humans and dwarves lie in their path." The Spine of the World has many defenders, not the least of whom are Drizzt Do'Urden and his powerful friends. But the Companions have grown dependent on one another. When they're separated by enemies, time, and death, can even a warrior a...more

It was a really good book. It was fun, light, enjoyable, and moral (in a sense). It was so much better than what Salvatore has been producing. It was back to the old days of the Companions of the Hall. It does seem a little bit like Salvatore is trying to redo what worked for him before. The group heads out from Icewind Dale to help Bruenor claim the crown of Mithril Hall, AND there’s going to be a grand adventure of trying to find an ancient Dwarven stronghold. I don’t care though, if it means...more

Drizzt, Cattie-brie, Wulfgar, Bruenor and Regis are embarking on yet another huge adventure. This time though Bruenor the dwarf is none to pleased about it as it looks certain that he must be the next king of Mithral Hall, a position he does not want.
By now these characters must be very familiar to avid Salvatore readers. For myself, well, I skipped all the books in between after “The Halfling’s Gem” and started up again right here with “The Thousand Orcs.”

When I was younger, I had dug out 'The Legend of Drizzt' from a box of books in my basement, and I fell in love with the story and the character. I had liked the characters and the journey, and eagerly devoured the next series. When I saw 'The Hunter's Blades' trilogy, I picked it up, expecting to find a group of changed heros and a new and exciting conflict.
While I enjoyed the story, I was disappointed.

I think this book was good. But it had some boring parts. Let me tell you the good parts first. The author of this book, R.A. Salvator, did a great job of describing the action parts of this book. This is not like most of the other books I have read when they just describe the action in just one sentence. It explains the scenes in two or three sentence.
Another thing I like about this book is that hte main character is strong. His name is Drizzt. He is not like those characters in the movies that...more

The Thousand Orcs by R.A. Salvatore is a fast paced story from the Hunters Blades Trilogy. From the minute you pick up this book you can not stop turning the pages because of the fast pace and exciting characters. If you are a fan of the other books by this author that share the character Drizzit this is a must read. Also if you have never heard of R.A. Salvatore and are just interested in a good book this would be a catching and easy read for those who love stuff like dark elves and fantasy and...more
I had never read any of Salvatore's work before this, so perhaps my view is skewed. But I found this to be a spectacularly unsophisticated fantasy novel. Drizzt is an interesting character and there is much that could be done with his background. I'm not entirely sure what the connection is between novels centered around him and the Dungeons and Dragons game. I know this book was published by Wizards of the Coast, which created the game also. So maybe it was just used to sell more copies of the...more
This tale feels different than the last 8 stories in the Drizzt series, and really felt more like ID than any of the others. The peripheral story again gets considerable face time, but again, wasn’t too shabby—much better was it than from LotD. This story is and always has been about Drizzt, however, and he is the driving plot. His character development has slowed during these last installments of the story, but he’s still so very cool. And as we seem to be getting closer to his and Catti-brie’s...more

Drizzt and his friends find themselves in a bit of trouble. They had seen a group of orcs, really small, and thought it was just a small group looking for trouble. Later, they find out that group of orcs was just a small group of many orcs ready to attack. Will Drizzt and his friends be able to take on all of these orcs? Or will they have to surrender under the hands or the orcs?

Just another book in the ongoing Legend of Drizzit series, this trilogy foreshadows a closure to Drizzit's adventures with his companions. Age is slowly catching up to them, while his Dark Elf blood will keep him young for hundreds of years to come. It does not help that they are all forced to come together to fight one last time in a battle that will be written down in history against a foe that knows no rest, no mercy nor how to stop. Orcs.

Drizzt and the gang are back, and they are going orc hunting! An alliance has been formed and it threatens the safety of all the humans living in the region of Icewind Dale. Drizzt and Bruenor and Wulfgar and Catti-brie and even Regis have taken it upon themselves to investigate these rumors of a large army and a threat to the surrounding villages.

A good bood by R.A. Salvatore, but it isn't the most interesting of the Drizzt stories.
All the gang is back and they are doing what they do best ... killing monsters. Salvatore has brought into this story some of the outside characters he has introduced in some earlier adventures of this group, and that is always fun for me as a reader. And I do like the fact that there is a real sense of mortality running through the story for these characters.

Finally!!! The heros are reunited and on to they're next adventure as a whole. A small group of drow elves living above ground are uniting the orcs, golblins and frost giants against the dwarves and surrounding small towns. Bruenor makes a visit to the rival and competing dwarf town of Mirabar, which causes a civil war with the dwarves living there. On they're way home to Mithral Hall for the coronation of King Bruenor Battlehammer, the heros decide on one last adventure, and are off to protect...more
Found on the mailroom table at my apt. Not the worst book I've ever read, but very, very far from the best. I am a big D&D fan, but never read any of the novels. Now I know why. I've lost track of the number of gaming cliches I've identified, but dwarves speaking like hillbilies and drow with darkly mysterious pasts should have clued me to what I was getting into ... I also should remember to beware of books that come in series ... and worse, are part of at least two series ... Book One of t...more
I just had to write this because, unlike the other Salvatore books, this got a 2 star from me. I found it aweful, truly aweful. The writing is still Salvatore, but the story is dreadful. I mean orcs? In true D&D status orcs can be killed right off the bat. The idea of them being very intelligent, etc, etc and building a kingdom, and all that jazz would be interesting, but ultimately it would fail, imo, because the Realms have so many powerful good guys, namely Alustriel, Blackstaff, etc. tha...more

I love this book. It was my first Drizzt book and after reading all the others, it's still my favorite. I could barely put it down even at the beginning when I was confused at what was going on. It has such an interesting mix of so many different kinds of characters that it would be enjoyable for all.
Salvatore does such a great job describing the action scenes, especially the swordfighting. It's more than just "slahs right. slash left, stab." He also does a great job of giving the reader a break...more

By this point, all of Salvatore's Drizzt books seem to run together in my mind, and this one adds, in a rather enjoyable way, to that long stream of story.
The book is a classic first-in-trilogy story, with big battles and lots of action to keep us interested, as well as new threads with other characters sure to play larger roles in the next few books.
I'm especially intrigued by the dwarves of Mirabar subplot, and how the short-sightedness of the human rules there drives the long-lived dwarves to...more

2.5 stars. Pretty much Tolkien's "The Two Towers" retold with Salvatore's characters. It was just way, way too similar. Actually, exactly the same plot. Kind of disappointing after "Sea of Swords" which I enjoyed immensely.
My favorite parts? Every scene involving Regis, he has become my favorite character of the whole series - Drizzt, the main hero, is just way too frickin' whiny. And then Ivan and Pikel Bouldershoulder for comic relief.

The Companions of the Hall are together again. The call has come to Bruenor. It is time for him to return to Mithril Hall and take up the kingship. So the companions set out for the great city of the dwarves. Along the way they encounter hostile forces, but they seem to treat the entire trip as a light adventure. Unknown to them a new force is rising. The orc chieftain Obould is raising the tribes living in the Spine of the World. They are moving out in force. Obould is no ordinary chieftain. He...more
This was one of my favorite series' by Salvatore.
The swordplay is always great. The characters are always so interesting and fresh. The action is so gripping. I found myself screaming at the end of the last book, so pissed off at how it ended. Not because it was bad but because certain characters that I thought for sure would die, ended up surviving. But the best parf about all of that is that is was so unpredictable.

This book is horrible. I've followed Salvatore since the late 80's, when I was in middle school, and I have come to the conclusion that while his reader's have grown, his writing has not. Realizing this back like in '02/03, I purposefully ignored him until now. I figured I could read the last 7(Hunter's Blade, Sellswords, and Orc King) in a month or two, so I decided to get back on that wagon.
This book in particular was just a complete ripoff of the Two Towers(not the book, the Movie. Ugh). From...more

The initial entry in R.A. Salvatore's Hunter's Blades Trilogy, "The Thousand Orcs" is a pretty much run of the mill fantasy novel featuring one of his recurring characters in Drizzi Do'Urden. The story follows a more or less predictable story line that essentially follows the Spine of the World & is divided into 4 easy to follow parts & keeping the story moving along. The introductions to each of the parts actually add a bit to the story, but otherwise this is pretty much standard fantas...more
Brueanor has to return to Mithril hall because Grandaulg has died and he has to take up the mantle of king again. On the way there they encounter a band of orcs which they kill, but they are worried about why the orcs woud have teamed up with frost giants. They stop at multiple towns around the region warning them of the posible threat the orcs and giants could pose. They are at one town when they are attacked by hundreds if not thousands of orcs with giants raining boulders down on them from a...more

This works best if you read the series in order, starting at the very beginning. If you don't you may very well feel like you have no idea what's going on. The characters are a work in progress, so if you haven't read all the books that come before now, you won't really fully understand or appreciate the choices and actions of the individual characters.
more to come - I need to have the books in front of me to remember what happens in which book! :)

This is a great book with a lot of action. The main character has unbelievable skill with wielding any kind of weapon and decides to use it for good, taking on any challenge that he needs to in the proccess. He helps a mountainside of nearly 4 thousand dwarfs defend their home against ten or more, thousand orcs, personally seeking out the massive brute leader among the orcs to take down himself. This is such a suspenseful book that it's hard to put down.
The previous book before this trilogy ended so harmoniously that I was concerned with how this one was going to go as it needed to create a whole new set of conflicts for Drizzt and his gang but it was another solid read from R.A. Salvatore. I suspect the next two books in this trilogy are going to get pretty exciting.

I was a bit surprised when I saw that this was published about 10 years ago. I hadn't realized I was so far behind on the Drizzt books. This is number 14 in the series, so I know what I was getting. Drizzt and his companions fighting orcs and going through some harrowing ordeals. We get to see some development of Regis as he comes to terms with his place in the group. Also there is quite a bit of Pikel Bouldershoulder, and that's always welcome.
Really liked this one - lots of hack and slash and moving characters around - LOVED that IVAN & Pickel Bouldershoulder made their reapperance - those guys crack me up.
Best of all, NO DROW "Intrigues"
All that jazz gets old fast...
I listened to this rather than reading it, and I got SICK of the moron who read it promouncing Cattie Brie as KAT EYE BRI EH....

This was the first Forgotten Realms and R. A. Salvatore book I'd ever read. As such it holds a special soft spot with me and I can't be trusted to give an objective review. I will say that the action was like nothing I had ever read before and that Salvatore has never failed to describe the action in stunning detail.

Loved it, sometimes you and your best mates have to go ham on some wild ass Orcs. Sometimes the Orcs have a god-strong leader. Sometimes Orks are not the pushovers you desire them to be. Othertimes you have to ride flying pegasus's with beautiful elf women warriors. It goes down and Drizzt is in the middle of it.

“Drizzt Do'Urden had followed a line of precepts based upon discipline and ultimate optimism. He fought for a better world because he believed that a better world could and would be made. He had never held any illusions that he would change the world, of course, or even a substantial portion of it, but he always held strongly that fighting to better just his own little pocket of the world was a worthwhile cause.”
