June 2010- if derek and chloe do not get together in this book, i think i just might die. really.

September 2012- I'm always so disappointed when I finish this series. Like, "But... what do you mean it's over? We were just getting into some major character development..." disappointed.
I almost wish this series was turned into a tv show just because I like the characters so much.

I’m never able to do them justice, but I’ll give it a whirl. The Reckoning is the final installment to Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers Trilogy. If you haven’t read The Summoning and The Awakening, I would advise you not to read this installment until you have. The Darkest Powers’ world is constantly evolving and Armstrong doesn’t waste her time catching readers up to what they should already know, which I have to admit, is part of what I love about her writing.

I devoured this book. Read it in one setting even and I was glad to see The Reckoning took us back to The Summoning eerie roots. To a place meant to be a sanctuary, but is eerily much more similar to a prison, where the do-gooders may pull a Judas, and the menaces make for the best allies. While this series may have a red-herring or two, I was so caught up in these characters and their journey that I didn’t even notice them until I had read the last page. In my mind, that is a testament to good writing, to see a flaw, and not register it or care because the story is just that good.

Chloe is equally impressive. She has shown tremendous growth and has somehow avoided the Mary Sue pitfall. It seems as though writers pen two types of heroines, the uber sweet, oh so pretty girl, despairing over her shortcomings as a mortal, who somehow rises to the challenge and smites everyone, becoming the bestest superhuman ever and miraculously saves the day or the oh so snide and cynical girl, jaded by everything and everyone, who has a hard edge, but somehow softens and like her counterpart, rises to the occasion and saves the day. Both types are cliché, neither apply to Chloe. Chloe is a necromancer, but as she often admits, isn’t of much use unless there is a corpse nearby. She is petite, but not overly pretty, or exceptionally smart. The word that comes to mind is average. And yet, Chloe doesn’t despair over things she lacks, nor does she turn into Chloe, Necromancer Goddess, though she is an extremely powerful necromancer. Rather, Chloe does what she can, and admits, that sometimes the best she can do is keep out of the way, and let those with more suited gifts run the show. Can we say refreshing?

I’m also enamored with Derek, who like his leading lady, avoids the stigma attached to leading men. He doesn’t kiss Chloe’s ass, nor is he mocking. He is honest and frank, protective and insecure, yet confident in his abilities. I appreciated the fact that Armstrong allowed him to lay into Chloe when she had made a mistake, and didn’t then force him to grovel as though honesty were a sin. And I’ll admit, I think Armstrong might lace her books with a bit of magic, cause she made me lust after someone, who upon first description, is very physically unattractive. That is simply unprecedented.

But what ultimately garnered my attention is the stereotype that Armstrong herself manages to bypass with ease. She can write and adult series, filled with some of the best steam I’ve read, and then turn around, write a book about supernatural teens, whose scenes together are so freaking sweet and endearing, that my stomach flips. Kudos.

All in all, a great non-ending to a series. While there was certainly a conclusion to the trilogy, Armstrong has left Chloe's story fairly open ended to allow for more adventures with Chloe and Co, and hopefully, we’ll see her again, in Women of the Otherworld.

I love Kelley Armstrong. I love her adult "Women of the Otherworld" series. I do not love her YA books, I think they are just OK reads, with overabundance of action but lacking actual plot and satisfying story resolutions. The same applies to this final book in the Chloe Saunders trilogy.

Most likely, if you enjoyed "The Summoning" and "The Awakening," I expect you will like "The Reckoning," because it's basically more of the same - the same running around scenarios with little story progression. Just like in the first two books, the majority of the story is devoted to the same hiding from the bad guys, figuring out if the good guys are actually good, trying to learn the nature of the Genesis project and... that's it. Although this book takes place mostly in the same house, there is the same going back and forth, planning and discussing escapes, just like in the previous two books. The story goes around in circles coming back to the Edison group each time. The novel is entertaining, but the constant action/walking around/scheming eventually gets tiresome. Some characters' miraculous appearances are surprising. Considering the villains are so quick to kill off kids, why some meddling adults are left alive and free is a mystery to me.

Fortunately, "The Reckoning" is more like "The Summoning" in terms of plot, there is a more defined high point/climax in the novel, where "The Awakening" was 90% running without any resolution. In addition, there is also more "meat" to the story - I enjoyed learning more about the project the kids are a part of and about everyone's powers. I also liked the budding romance between Chloe and Derek, their relationship is written well, it is healthy (unlike many portrayed in YA literature) and the teens themselves feel real and not in the least annoying. For us, fans of Armstrong's adult books, there is a nice surprise too - a tiny bridge to her "Women of the Otherworld" series.

The rest - well, the book is more entertaining than the 2nd in the trilogy, but ultimately it is not as satisfying as Armstrong's adult novels which all have definitive endings and completed story arcs. Even this final book in the trilogy leaves the story wide open for more sequels with many loose ends left unexplored (I wish to at least know why Chloe's necklace changes colors). I still believe (as I did after finishing the 1st book in the trilogy), that this trilogy has just enough story for one good YA novel, but instead is unwisely stretched into a series. I will however most likely read the next book in the Dark Powers - "The Gathering," because in spite of the flaws, Armstrong's books are better than 90% of the YA literature out there. (less)

The Reckoning, the third book in the Darkest Powers trilogy, starts off with intensity and ends triumphantly. And all good stuff in between!

Unfortunately, it's going to be hard to write a review without some spoilers... but I'll try to keep the major ones out.

Where the first two books lacked in a bit of romance, it was made up for in this book! Chloe and Derek's budding romance was such a refreshing change from the typical *gorgeous* teenagers in most other stories. Chloe is described as average but it is Derek who surprises me the most at his leading man abilities. Derek is a genetically altered human/werewolf. In the first two books, he is going through a rather unattractive growth spurt fueled by the rage of hormones supposedly involved in his completing a full change to a wolf. 'Puberty Smackdown' was not kind to Derek but it seems that as he gets closer and closer to making that full change to a wolf, his attractiveness improves (and Chloe certainly notices).

As much as Derek is maybe a bit of a 'bull in a china shop', some of his moments with Chloe are just so incredibly sweet. For a tough guy, he admits to wanting to have Chloe there with him while he changes -- seeing him at his worst -- and all the while, she is holding his hand or rubbing his shoulders offering encouragement. These two characters especially grow to a point where you really, REALLY care for them. I think I fell in love with Derek right along with Chloe (not that they admit to "loving" each other (yet)... which is another thing I liked. Their romance is now just beginning at the end of this trilogy... making it very believable.

The story was full of unpredictable twists and turns -- a couple of things I saw coming but overall I was surprised by most outcomes. It was hard to figure out (for them and us) who Chloe, Derek, Simon and Tori could trust and who was playing them. They continue their life on the run... first looking for Simon & Derek's father's trusted friend Andrew for help. Once they find him, they're off to a safe house where they can plan their attack of The Edison Group's headquarters. Meanwhile, Chloe wants to go back to rescue Rae and her Aunt Lauren, if either are even still alive. Andrew's friends are also there to help teach the kids to control their abilities, however, the adults soon find out that these kids are much more powerful than they could have imagined and two of them decide on an alternative plan of action. The foursome also discovers that The Edison Group has terminated some previous experiments/subjects because they could not be controlled. So they are basically running for their lives.

Chloe continues to hone her necromancer skills... Derek finally makes the full change to a werewolf and back. Tori's and Simon's powers also come in handy throughout. We also get a little back-story on some of the characters.

What I loved about the ending was not only the love-story coming to fruition, but Chloe's personal acceptance. All along, she longs for her previously normal/boring life... before she could see ghosts, before she could raise the dead and control them, before her life on the run. But she slowly realizes that this is going to be her life from now on... she's a powerful necromancer and wants to try to put her powers to good use.

I truly cared for these four supernatural teens and their outcomes. I wanted to see them all happy in the end, and I wasn't disappointed even though it didn't quite end the way I was anticipating. The resolutions are satisfying enough while still leaving just a couple of threads hanging for the story to be revisited in the future, which I understand Kelley is doing in her next trilogy... Darkness Rising... and I for one, look forward to it!(less)

Okay, okay, okay. Four stars.

See, I enjoy these books while reading them, and its not until afterwards that I realize their faults. I get sucked into the easy writing and run-and-hide plot. Its certainly a good way to spend a few hours.

This series could have been one book, because really, the plot of these books is pretty much running, hiding, moments of sexual tension, and the occasional revelation. Take a cheese grater to this series, and you might just have one excellent YA paranormal.

"The Reckoning" Has not yet been put on the shelves, But my Mother works for a book company and so I have gotten the book early. I am currently reading this book and it is just like the first two books, Exciting. If you have read "The Summoning," and "The Awakening," You defiantly want to read this book! I have just finished this book and it was diligent! I loved it! Suggestion for the ending, don't think "omg, why did hey end it like that, the should have explaned what happends more and bla bla...more

One of those books that you can't help saying "Aw, well isn't that sweet" when you finsih it and genuinely mean it.

Still had plenty of issues with it. However, compared to the first two, especially the second novel The Awakening, this one was pretty good, and better than some recently published paranormal novels.

Not going to do a full review, just list my biggest complaint with this book. While it did have me saying "Aw" and having a slight smile on my face, that ending isn't a good one, sin...more

Just a note of warning before I jump into the review: this book cannot be thoroughly enjoyed (or even really understood) if you have not read the first two books, so don’t even try. It’s not worth it since this book is meant to be enjoyed from the standpoint of someone who has read the previous books and wants to know how everything wraps up.

Now for my critique -- well, I am a fan of the books, and I did enjoy the “finale." (“Enjoy” might be a bit of an understatement since I plowed my way through this book as soon as I got my hands on it.) While the flaws in the series (mainly a lot of speculation, red herrings, “who-dun-its,” and run/chase/repeat sequences) persist in a similar fashion to the first two books, there’s a certain enjoyment to be gleaned from just having followed these characters through their many ordeals. They are all young teenagers, lest any reader forget, so it’s pretty daunting to think of how all their lives turned upside down so quickly (particularly Chloe’s). Anyway -- that being said, I doubt this book will help in converting people who had mixed feelings about the first two in the trilogy. Let’s just say that you’ll likely feel the same things about The Reckoning as you did with The Summoning and The Awakening, whether your feelings towards the books were negative or positive.

My only gripe is that the “ending” doesn’t feel like an ending. I feel as if Kelley Armstrong left everything open-ended so that she could revisit Chloe and Co. in the future if she wished. For example, a plot point involving demons is brought up and left unresolved -- making one wonder if Chloe will grow up and have a Women of the Otherworld novel of her own (if you‘ve read this book, you‘ll know the scene of which I‘m speaking). If not, then a fourth YA novel following Chloe Saunders shouldn’t be ruled out. Given that Kelley Armstrong is writing another trilogy following a different set of characters (a brief paragraph excerpt from The Gathering is included at the end of this novel), however, I wonder if she will get to writing it in the near future. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a fourth Darkest Powers book despite “trilogy” being tagged constantly to these books. (After that ending, I would be disappointed if these characters were not revisited in the future. Honestly -- leave us hanging on a number of points, why don‘t you? *grumbles*)

Overall, I rather liked this book -- and I’m hoping the door has not been closed on Chloe’s adventures since I would really like to see how these teenagers grow and become in the harrowing years likely to come . . .(less)

I'm not going to spoil the story for you but there are plenty of good bits, in fact I noted down my favourite pages to do with Chloe and Derek: 125, 225, 242, 292, 371-2 and 390. The part in the woods with the werewolves was excellent, my eyes were glued to the pages. I love how Chloe and Derek are determined to protect each other at great risk to their own lives.

FINALLY!

All I am going to say is that Chloe finally picked a guy and it was the one I wanted! Wooohooo! I don't even care what happened in the rest of the book, I just wanted that to happen and it did!

First off, I am a huge fan of this series. I love the story, the characters, the world that Armstrong has created. That being said, The Reckoning wasn't my favorite book of the series.

SPOILERS... sorta

I have to say that this is probably my most favorite YA book series. I really loved the character development and the story progression throughout the whole shebang. As well as the whole gang - which is always a good thing.

Then if course there is Derek and Chloe's relationship. I loved how layered Derek was. It made things really interesting and made you fall in love with him a bit more and more as time passes... just like Chloe. I appreciated that they had a journey as much as...more

The characters are incridible as usual. I loved joining Chloe, Derek, Simon, Tori, Liz and sooo many others on their journey. It's characters like these that make the story so captivating and what it is.
Chole was such a refreshing main character! There are so many books out there where the heroine is tough and confidant and completly flawless, and....while they're usually awesome characters, it's hard to believe that anyone can be that perfect. There was never a moment in this series when Chloe was 100% brave or when certain events or issues didn't get to her. This is what i loved about her. She wasn't always brave or sure of what she was doing, but she still did her best and what she had to do. This is what made her a strong, exceptional character. One i've loved to watch grow.
And Derek....what can i say about him? Awesome, strong, protective Derek. Not your typical hunk of a male lead, but a honest, haunted individual. He too wasn't what i've come to expect of a lead in a book, but i loved him for that. It was everything he was that made him so interesting. He had such a great relationship with his brother and i liked how the friendship between he and Chloe developed into something more. Their interacations were the highlight of the series for me.
Chloe and Derek have got to be amongst my fave book couples ever. They're relationship was one that drew me in each and every book and had me captured from the beginning. It was a first and true love. It was very cute. They were such an odd pair, so differnt, and yet they connected beautifully. I adored how Chole fell for Derek and how he gradually let her in. It was so sweet!

I'm really sad this series is over. I'd love to see it go on and on, but Kelley Armstrong had ended it on an excellent note. Most loose ends are tired up, and yet there are so many possibilities for the characters. You just know they're gonna live happily ever after........(less)

Hmm. The ending was unsatisfying. I'm also not fond of the whole "male love interest is dangerous and physically imposing, but is misunderstood and is really a nice guy underneath" motif that, while always present in women's literature, is unfortunately on the rise in teen literature. I blame Wuthering Heights and Twilight for that. I think these messages are genuinely dangerous for our young women to continually hear. Many books have this cliched guy heroines impersonate, that they were once that protective, mysterious bad-ass, and after they start to date their love-interest, they transformed into this complete love junkie; Derek's definetely not like this; he's one of those characters that you would call "orginal". He's a little too insensitive, but I had to type this. Derek is still very protective to his crew (or should I say "pack"?)

Derek and Chloe have a genuine relationship. They always stick around together to gather information to help save lives of that hell-hole from them, their friends and everyone else would've stayed forever. And I really loved that. They didn't slack, Derek didn't have this "I really want you, but we can't be together. I'm too dangerous" sort of attitude. Even if the thing with Simon didn't work out for Chloe. And the best part? Simon knew it, but giving it a chance doesn't hurt. Armstrong did the "love triangle" or...I don't know really, it's not much of a love triangle. But anyways, she's clever to make Simon sympathetic enough to let that castastrophe go. It's was totally unexpected, which made me like Chloe even more. She never considered either of them as love-interests.

The plot on some cases were just nonesense to me,the whole Edison cooperation thing. I felt as though it should the book should rush just a little bit, and I wanted the romance between Chloe and Derek to expand just a little more . But overall, not a dissapoint as the previous books. And also, the perfect ending to the trilogy.:)

Ich hätte ja schon nicht gedacht, dass es noch besser werden kann als das erste Buch und dann kam das zweite. So weit so gut. Irgendwann wird das ja nicht mehr zu toppen sein! Denkste, der dritte Teil setzt dem ganzen echt noch mal die Krone auf und hat mich von vorne bis hinten umgehauen.

Diese Trilogie hat Suchtpotential! Ich bin ihr total verfallen und kann es immer noch nicht fassen, dass es das jetzt gewesen sein soll. Ich will nicht schon Abschied von diesen tollen Charakteren nehmen, ich will noch viel viel mehr über sie lesen. (Und meiner Meinung nach gab es am Ende zwar keine offenen Handlungen, jedoch trotzdem genügend Stoff, aus dem man mindestens noch ein Buch hätte machen können!)

Auch wenn ich mich damit wahrscheinlich nur wiederhole: Aber Kelley Armstrong sticht ganz stark raus aus der Menge der Paranormal-Ya Bücher! Sie hält sich nicht an den Einheitsbrei sondern geht ihren ganz eigenen Weg und hat so eine nicht nur extrem aufregende Geschichte geschaffen, sondern die tollsten, liebenswertesten Charaktere, die mir bisher untergekommen sind. Starke Persönlichkeiten, die man sofort ins Herz schließt und nicht mehr vergessen kann und will (ich denke ernsthaft schon jetzt wieder darüber nach, die Trilogie nochmal zu lesen^^) Das besondere ist, dass man hier nicht diese Standard Charaktere vor sich hat. Nicht das hilflose Mädchen, das ständig vom sexy Arschloch gerettet wird. Ich hätte niemals gedacht, dass ich mal für einen Kerl so schwärmen würde, der so beschrieben wird, wie es hier bei Derek der Fall ist. Doch bei ihm machte es sofort klick und ich wollte keine Handlungsstränge mehr ohne ihn lesen. Und was ihn ausmacht, ist, dass er auf gewisse Weise so ‘normal’ ist und somit viel realistischer als manch andere Personen, die man sonst so geboten bekommt.

War in den ersten zwei Büchern noch ziemlich klar, wem Chloe & Co trauen können, so wird man hier ständig wieder hinters Licht geführt. Ein ständiges Hin und Her und Auf und Ab und ich kam mir vor, als würde ich einen Marathon laufen, so bin ich durch die Seiten gehetzt.

Ich bin vollkommen in dieser Welt versunken und mich konnte nichts mehr ablenken und davon abhalten immer weiter und weiter zu lesen.

Eine absolut lesenswerte Trilogie, die ich jedem empfehlen kann (man sollte sie jedem aufzwingen, der sie noch nicht hat). Auf den ersten Blick mag sie nichts anderes sein, als ein weiterer kleiner Fisch im großen Gewässer, wenn man jedoch einen tieferen Blick wagt, bekommt man etwas ganz Besonderes geboten!(less)

I loved this book so much! I think it was my favorite of the entire series, and that’s really saying something, because I LOVED the Summoning, and the Awakening. This book is a lot more intense than the other two, and there are so many questions answered. It was one of those books you couldn’t put down for a second. The moment I started reading I couldn’t stop until I finished the book, 391 pages later. I’d been looking forward to reading this book for a while now – ever since I finished the Awakening – and I was most definitely not disappointed. I bought it the day it came out and finished it two days later. The only reason it took me so long was because I had to study for a HUGE history test and couldn’t read more than ten (give or take a hundred) pages that night. As always, the writing style was great, the characters were funny, sarcastic, and amazing, and the plot was not very surprising…but still fantastic. I could rant endlessly about how much I enjoyed this series, but I’ll spare you. It was an amazing conclusion to the Darkest Powers trilogy. Yes, trilogy. Meaning this is the last we’ll hear of Chloe Saunders and her incredible zombie powers. Yeah, this made me sad too… However, a book that is supposed to be related to this incredible trilogy by Kelley Armstrong is the Gathering, coming out in Spring of 2011. I, personally, can not wait! Anything by Kelley Armstrong is good for me! Read this and be amazed, as usual! A suspenseful read full of action, betrayal, and romance. The stunning final chapter of the Darkest Powers trilogy.

The Reckoning was by far the best book in the Darkest Power Series. This book had the most interesting story and the best characters out of the three. Derek was super sweet in this book and most times I found my-self awwww really loud and having people give me death stares. Simon was also amazing and even though there were some extremely awkward parts with him and Chloe he was still amazing. The rest of the characters were the same if not better than the previous two books. This book kept me reading into the deep times of the night and even once while walking down the hallway. The only thing that I didn’t like about this book was the fact that it was the last book and how a lot of the questions in the series weren’t answered. In an interview she stated that in later books to come she will give answers to these questions, so not really a big complaint. Everything else I was going to say was stated above by Dream and so that pretty sums up what I was going to say. Everyone who has read the Darkest Power Series should finish off with this one because it was magic!

OK, I’m torn on this book. I loved The Summoning, the 2nd book in this trilogy, and I kind of feel gypped (sic?) with this book, The Reckoning, the final installment to the Darkest Powers series. Yes, there was action, but not a lot. I didn’t expect the kids (Chloe, Tori, Derek, and Simon) to stay at Andrew’s house the whole time. I mean, you have a werewolf, a witch, a wizard, and a girl who can raise the dead and they CAN’T escape??

There were a lot of twists and turns, though, which made up for the lack of scenery in the book.

The LOVE TRIANGLE, however, was what I was waiting for. Yes, there could be a book about demons and witches, or death and warlocks, and I still look for the love story. I am a girl. Completely.

I left The Summoning loving Derek. Simon seemed nice and all, but Derek just seemed better. Although, one thing that bugged me was that these kids all seemed so grown up, except when it came to romance. Yes, I know they’re young, but if you’re on the run from people who want to kill you (i.e. The Edison Group), maybe just go for the love you want, rather than beat around the bush about it.

That being said, the fact that Derek and Chloe hooked up earlier on in the novel was just wonderful.

Moving on.

This was a great final installment to the Darkest Powers series and I kind of wish the gang would have more adventures, though it’s nice to have had an ending, finally (even if the characters hinted at the adventures they’ll be having in the future). I also enjoyed the growth of Tori’s character, but thought she could have been affected a little more by having to kill her own mother. The fact that her and Simon share a father is interesting and it would have been nice to see what she thought of that. Speaking of Simon, he really didn’t do anything for me in this book – I could feel Chloe and Dereck and Tori, but Simon could have not even been there and I don’t think I would have noticed a difference.

I have to say that one of the best things about Armstrong’s writing is that she doesn’t waste a full chapter on catching up the reader on what happened in the previous book. The way I see it, if the reader is already into the series, they don’t need the back story. Another great thing is the development of Chloe. Even though I thought she seemed really young in some aspects of the novel, she wasn’t the whiny, almost-breakable heroine that we see in other books of the genre (like Bella in Twilight or Zoey in the House of Night books). She was able to stick up for herself and her friends and make herself be heard.

I’m not sure if I feel inclined to read more of Armstrong’s work. Based on this trilogy, it’s hard to say if I would like anything else or not. I’m not sure if I would feel differently had ALL the books in the trilogy been available when I started to read, but I guess I’ll never know. Part of my also thinks that this book didn’t HAVE to be a trilogy – there was a lot of filler stuff that could have been edited out and it could have been just one novel.

I don’t think I’ll partake in the next series of Armstrong’s, The Gathering, but I’m sure I’ll check out some reviews to see if these characters make their way into the books.
