After killing the husband of his lover, Sen is sent to a prison nicknamed the "Under Grand Hotel", which houses some of the most violent and corrupt offenders. Good-looking and rather soft for prison, Sen is forced to seek protection from Swordfish, the proclaimed leader of the prison. But when their relationship turns from one of convenience to one that may be more involv...more

Admittedly, this was my first foray into manga and I have to say if other works in this format are even half as good as this, then consider me sold on manga.

Forewarning though, this is not for the squeamish. It's brutal, visceral, extremely unsettling and reminiscent of the soapy goodness of the HBO prison drama Oz. It tells the story of Sen, a Japanese student living in the USA who gets an 88 year sentence without the possibility of parole for killing the husband of the woman he was having...more

I read this one basically because I was looking for some prison love and this came as one being recommended. i must tell you, it's REALLY GOOD!! I love complicated relationship; and man, prison love is one basic ground for complication, right? There are some funny moments, tender moments, and definitely HOT SEXY moments. IT IS love in prison and it is probably one of the brutal places for men, right? So you definitely get the beating and the rape scenes. BUT, I can't help to get sucked into the...more

There is clearly seen where the inspiration for this manga came. The TV series The OZ was the main inspiration and the theme was pushed in to the yaoi land. The love story between Sword Fish, Afroamerican shutcall, and Owari Sen, Japanese youngster who simply was at the wrong time on the wrong place, is full of violence, raping and ton of prison sex. It ends happily ever after, but every story must have some nice plot and twists which shock readers to the bone. This manga is full of plot spiced...more

Gritty, brutal, violent, sexy, hopeless and hopeful. Loved this one.

"Loving you is the worst crime I've ever committed."

I LOVE UGH. I usually enjoy all Sadahiro-sensei's works but UGH has been one of my favorites for years now, even before it was licensed in the US (finally!). The plotline is unique and the way Sen and Swordfish's relationship is worked in the setting of prison life is thrilling. Plus the intimate scenes are hot as hell!

UGH has everything you would expect from both a love story and a prison movie, and it makes it work. Its one of those series th...more

The first yaoi I ever read was Ayano Yamane's Finder series, and it's still my favorite. The perfect blend of hard yaoi and beautiful illustrations, with an intriguing plot. Finally, I have found another series to equal it!

UGH is set in a prison. I'm surprised that this hadn't been licensed before, given the popularity of shows like Oz and Prison Break. Sen is sentenced to life in prison. The young student is targeted and seeks out a protector, Sword Fish. Sen pays for the protection with his b...more

This sums pretty much the tenor of the manga:

I didn't completely like it but didn't even hate it.
There simply wasn't a plot, just an infinite show of rapes, violence and sex. Tons of it.
I'd have appreciated a bit more of "feelings" and of the other inmates characterization, but maybe it was still early.
Both Sword and Sen seemed to be more comfortable in having sex than talking about their past.
I'm not sure if I'll read the next volume, there were too things that left me disappointed.

Sen and Swordfish are like a match made in ... kinky heaven.

Mika Sadahiro really had a soft spot for the HBO series OZ, and the fact that the series also got me started on slash and M/M romance really made me place this yaoi manga among my favorites.

But, this is not all. The story is well written, the characters are well fleshed out (for a manga, where everything must be said short and fast), and I absolutely loved the two main MCs interactions.

In the first volume, we just get to meet these two...more

Hahaha good Lord how did I end up here?

First of all, let me state that my rating is based off it's quality as a yaoi manga, not for the medium overall.

If you're looking for a hardcore yaoi with loads of sex and insane/violent characters then this is your joint. It's basically OZ with some Ai no Kusabi D/s thrown in.

The portrayal of the Underground Hotel prison complex itself is completely ridiculous at worst and unrealistic at best. But hey I dunno, there just might be an underground prison ou...more

While I generally like Mika Sadahiro's work, liked the storyline of this manga, and have no qualms with yaoi it was just way too graphic for me. I guess I found my limit. I'm not claiming it isn't a good manga, just not for me I'm afraid.

Okay I will start of with I love Mika Sadahiro. This book had me from the start, I don't really do prison stories. But Sen was so intriguing. his reason for being there, and his attitude about it. I ranked him like a modern day samurai. Then there was Swordfish. I really loved hating him. he was like the very epitome of a hood rat that made it big...In prison. The situations the MCs found themselves were a lot different than I expect and that was a plus.

I have yet to read a Mika Sadahiro story...more

This review is for all 3 volumes

After reading this, I honestly wasn't sure how I could even rate it. I knew I didn't like it, but it was such a bizarre read that I wasn't sure the 5-star rating could properly describe it. In the end, I decided to rate it based on two things: the story, characters etc, and the sex/relationship.

The Plot:
Well, I mean, there really wasn't one. It was about how one "straight" guy in jail meets another "straight" guy in jail and how many times they have sex. It didn't...more

Sen Owari receives a life sentence, for murder, which entitles him to becomes a guest of the government. He is incarcerated in the Federal Prison, Underground Hotel, level 3. This prison lies 30 metres below Long Island, buried so deep that the inmates can never see the sun. In their own inimitably twisted way, the inmates nickname their home the Under Grand Hotel. Welcome to the fun!

Sen's first night there, he overhears the sound of sex coming from the cell next to his, one of the occupants of...more

I've watched all six seasons of OZ, so I thought I couldn't be shocked anymore when it comes to series set in an all male high security prison.

I was wrong.

Mika Sadahiro sure doesn't pull her punches here. While the focus is different than it was in OZ, it's a bit as if OZ was just Beecher/Keller all the time, with all the fuckedupness, twistedness and fucking. There is a lot of fucking going on in there, so much so that I am actually not comfortable at the thought that this will probably be stan...more

Bought this at Anime Expo on Friday, read it yesterday and was absolutely blown away. This is not for the weak, the squeamish or those who like their yaoi with hearts and flowers. This is not cute schoolboy BL. It's beautiful, brutal, angry, scary and yet redemptive. It's men in prison doing what it takes to survive with their sanity--if not their dignity--intact.

I was actually drawn to this series initially because one of the leads--Sword Fish--is black, something seldom seen in any Japanese ma...more

The drawings by this artist is just effin' hot and explicit. I would give four stars just for the drawing. But no seriously, there is a plot too. That is what makes 'Under Grand Hotel' one of my favourite mangas. I love the two main characters, Sen and Sword. Sen is a very strong guy, who despite every bad experience he went through, moved forward with his life. I liked that he stood up to Sword from the very beginning. Sword on the other hand, is a complex man who fell in lust and then love wit...more

This is a really interesting manga. All i can say is 'Damn it, it's so sexy!' This is one of the few books/ manga i would reread and reread without getting tired of it. I was hooked on to this manga from the very beginning, from the moment i flipped the page. Every chapter is so exciting and half the time you don not know what to expect and what's going to happen next. It made me cry a few times or feel somewhat emotional as i read it which i do not do quite often at all unless the book/ manga i...more

Don't read this if you're squeamish, repeat, do not read it. The first chapter alone involves a mop handle and a psycho. You know when you read something really disturbing and can't bring yourself to stop? Well, that's my case.

Long story short, Sen sells his body to the "boss" Swordfish for protection. One moment they are fucking and the next Sen is being raped by other prisioners. What I like about the story? Guess it's the hopelessness. There's nothing amiable about these guys. They are murder...more

I revised my review to 5 stars because I just can't forget this series. It is intense, grim, raw and all of those descriptive words for love and ...honor...in a prison setting. There are no safe words here. There is no sweetness and light. But it is a gripping series, and draws the reader into the "OMG what happens next" even when sometimes the reader doesn't want to really deal with the "what happens next."

I won't say a word about the outcome except - well worth the read.

Revisited this one, definitely NOT for everyone. Sen is in prison for Murder. Sword for drug distribution and murder and the leader of the prison both are incarcerated in...The Under Grand Hotel. Its called so because the prison is underground and known for the relationships the men find themselves in. Though Sword seems cruel, he has a weak spot...for Sen. Sword will do anything to protect what he considers his, including Sen. Love blossoms in prison, but it's not pretty.

Holy shit.... those are the words that basically went through my mind when I got through the first 20 pages or so. I found some of the things in here so... repulsive and yet very HOT! And I especially loved the interracial relationship that Sword and Sen have. Although at times their actions confused me. I wondered often if they loved each other so much why do they constantly hurt each other?? In the end I loved it and its hotness and its complicated love stuff.

Hmmm I'm leaning here can't decide if i want to give this 3 stars or 2 stars it rates a 2.5 on my scale readable, passes time, story lines doesn't really suck... but it's not great. I mean it would be a 3 star if the artwork was a little better. This is a manga I expect better than recycled characters i've seen someone more than once before but ehh i can still read it. Deadlock was more enjoyable until they started only having raw chapters

crime, jail, prisoners, brutally lust & darkside alter ego.
bingo!,completely bad guys ever!
i think swordfish more cruel & brutal than sen, although that, both of them still need help each other also understanding each other.
live at jail is not safe, readers.many disturbance happens among them.sometimes act out of mind must do it:P

I loved this manga! it was so hot and well-drawn, I just couldn't stop reading it. i definitely recommend it.
