What some view as trash, Linda and John Meyers see as raw material. The wife-and-husband team—subscribers to the “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos—have perfected a design strategy that will save you money, help the planet, and provide hours of DIY fun. The strategy? First, visit a yard sale, construction-site dumpster, or even your own attic. Select something that somebody ...more

This is a pretty great DIY moment- The guy who wrote it was the head of Visual at Anthropology during the very brief time that I worked there- He and his wife offer up some incredibly tasteful takes on honoring "junk"- They are really more conceptual artists than crafters, and I mean that as a compliment to their ability to consistently err away from the the dreaded loving hands at home trap and into the gallery worthy- It is hard to believe that there are mortals out there that can execute ...more

Tossed and Found book is full of super creative and artsy projects from salvaged items. Most of which you would need serious art skills to pull off but it is so much fun to flip through for inspiration. I especially love the skeleton chairs. The pages of Meyers' working sketches and doodles show her creative process and you can see how the ideas evolved. Now I'm ready to bust out my toolbox and go dig through some yard sales!

i thought this would be a little more practical, but it was really like a coffee table book. it was interesting to look at, but a lot of the projects seem impractical and not really based on the idea of saving money and recycling items. it was more designers trying to find cool things to do with found objects. some projects were interesting to look at, others cheesy and hideous, most completely non-functional.

when they say castoffs, they really mean it. these people take complete junk and turn it into, um, what would you call it? Weird stuff. they have undeniable vision and talent but completely not my aesthetic.
