I ended this book positively seething. I was so mad. Not about the writing or the characters, but about the hateful council and they way they can ruin your life. The way they can control certain people, and the impossible situations others are put in because of it, fills me up with futile anger because I can't change it. I get so angry when it's a small group against a whole society. It's almost impossible to win when everyone is against you, actively or otherwise.

She enjoyed her freedom to make her own choices, be her own woman, and be the owner of a New Orleans bar. She had many friends, a successful business and a huge crush for Derek, a newly turned werewolf. I found her conflicting emotions of desire mixed with uncertainty for Derek to be believable. Although I confess, there were moments within the book, that I felt a little disappointed in her. It was her incessant need to shoulder all the blame, claiming it was all her fault that irritated me. The pity parties felt a little out of character for her. Other than those particular moments, I really liked her.

Unbeknownst to Nick, Derek's feelings for her were mutual. Derek would have liked nothing more than to take her and claim her for his own, but feared, he would not be able to control his beast and would end up hurting her. Derek was one of those "all around nice guys", very easy to like. He was strong and resourceful, but didn't have that arrogant chip on his shoulder. He took care of his psychic cousin, Kat, ran a business with his partner Andrew, and was loyal to his friends. His life hadn't been easy, before or after his transformation, but he tried to make the best of it. It was something I respected about his character.

I was happy that the couple threw caution to the wind and confessed thier attraction early on in the book. The chemistry was undeniable, and denying it and dragging it out would have been pointless. However, the unpredictable nature of Miora Roger's writings, teased the reader with a wonderful stall tactic. Just when things began to go from hot to sizzling...You know what I mean!, Nick's sister showed up on her door step, pregnant and in trouble. Clever...clever...A great way to build up sexual tension. The writers giveth a taste, then taketh away. It was heart warming the love Nick had for her sister, and the sacrifices she was willing to make. I also appreciated Derek's understanding of the situation. Although, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. He needed to feel needed and Nick was trying to protect him, by excluding him in matters that were important to her. Then he had to sit by and watch her leave him, to marry someone else.

I felt the supporting characters were richly developed in this book. From Kat and Andrew's relationship and the struggles that they will have to deal with, I hope that they will have thier own book, to Michelle and Luciano's unusual relationship. While, I was disappointed that her relationship with Aaron didn't work out, I can't help but look forward to this one. Luciano seems like a nice guy and is willing to do anything for Michelle...I can't help but be curious if anything will become of it. The most surprising relationship was between The Alpha and his daughters. In truth, I expected him to be a selfish and arrogant hard-ass, but it turned out he was a nice arrogant hard-ass, who only wanted to make a better community. He obviuously loved his girls.

Overall, this book was not only romantic and sexy, it was thought provoking and compelling. Crossroads takes the reader deeper into the supernatural community and is shown it's hierarchy and the political intrigue that goes along with it. I appreciate the realistic issues embedded into the story , the ones that had me asking "what if?". What if I was expected to marry someone for political gain? What if I was forbidden to have children. I can't even begin to imagine, my choices being taken away from me, or something as natural as having a child, to be forbidden. The harsh reality is, this type of prejudice and fear actually exist and there are woman around the world that suffer because of it. Not to mention, the bigotry against those of different standings in society. Crossroads is filled with romance, political intrigue, friendships, murder, love, and sacrifice. I do feel that this can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend reading Crux first.

I highly enjoyed this book, it's exactly the paramormal romance I like.

In Crossroads we get to watch Nick and Derek fight for their HEA and we get to know more about politics and just about how far those shifters can go their manipulative and calculating power games.

It all starts when Michel (Nick's twin sister) arrives in New Orleans with Aaron (her bodyguard and forbidden lover) and announces that she is pregnant and Aaron is accused of treason! Nick is willing to risk and sacrifice everything...more

I'm just wondering how wrong it is that I read this book in one three hour sitting? I really enjoy the easy way the writing reads. Fluid and well paced, the book draws you happily towards the end, to the detriment of other things in your life like getting out of bed or breakfast. Silly little things like work and life just get swept to the side!

I feel like I should knock on wood or something. I have had a string of really great books and keep waiting for one to let me down! Crossroads continued my lucky trend of great books and exceeded my expectations. I am hereby declaring Moira Rogers my favorite discovery of 2009.

Nicole Peyton is a werewolf. She also happens to be heir to the very rich and powerful Alpha of the United States pack of werewolves. We first meet Nicole in book 1 of the series, Crux. What makes Nicole so endearing is that she doesn’t want the wealth and power that she has every right to. Instead she leaves the world of werewolf politics and runs a bar in New Orleans. She is trying desperately to live a life of normalcy, constantly turning away from her father’s goals of making her into a powerful female Alpha.

Derek Gabriel is a sexy beast. Derek was turned a werewolf, instead of being born one. As he tries to adjust to his new life he pushes Nicole away, even tho its obvious to all around them there is a connection between them. Thankfully the wolf comes to his senses not too far into the book and tries to claim what his inner wolf is telling him is HIS. Unluckily, on the verge of Nicole and Derek finding out what the future holds for them, Nicole’s twin sister shows up with danger following her.

I went into this story fully expecting Derek and Nick to fight their attraction for half the book, it seemed obvious considering how stubborn they seemed to be! I mean they had already ignored it for 2 years, what was a little more time?!? I was overjoyed to find out I was wrong. The chemistry between the two was sweltering and just too much to ignore. The next thing I knew we had werewolves having sex on the kitchen floor amongst a flurry of waffle batter. This book contains an intimate scene in the forest after a run, which has to be the hottest scene I have read in a very long time…. I had to read it twice. Then I noticed I had a big grin on my face and was blushing furiously. Derek and Nick are just so needy, so intense, so passionate – it is perfection.

Where Jackson’s southern charm in book 1, Crux, made my heart go pitter patter, Derek’s protective and passionate alpha manhood makes my toes curl.

I should probably point out there is much more to this book than just hot forest sex, lest I get sidetracked and find myself rereading all my bookmarked scenes, again. Crossroads has a complicated and engrossing plot that takes us deeper into werewolf politics. We learn so much more about the life Nicole and her sister have been subjected to along with the bond between them. Crossroads drags you into the characters lives and forces you to experience their passion, their happiness, but also their sadness and pain.

As if all of the above isn’t good enough for a 5 star review, Moira Rogers manages to add a little bit more to the story. Jackson and Mackenzie from Crux are still in the mix and have small parts in the book. We get glimpses of the brooding and sarcastic Alec, at least once in nothing but a pair of jeans (hopefully low slung ones). We are also given a new development in regards to Kat and Andrew, side characters from book 1. They step a bit closer to the front of the stage in Crossroads and I hear that Andrew will be getting his own book after Alec’s. Based on the events in this book, I am going to go ahead and lay claim to Andrew right now. He is mine and you can’t have him.

If you have not read Crux, I encourage you to do so immediately so that you can pick up Crossroads on the day it releases, February 9th. Trust me, you will not be sorry(less)

Crossroads focuses on Nicole Peyton and Derek Gabriel who we met in Crux. Nick is basically a shapeshifter princess who was born into the ruling family of the werewolves (her father is the Alpha) while Derek was changed two years earlier in a vicious attack. Nick ran from her life in New York City to New Orleans and ended up taking over the bar, Mahalia's, from her friend. Nick established a life for herself outside of the politics of the born - werewolf clans. Derek has been struggling with his new abilities and emotions ever since he was changed. He wants Nick badly, and all their friends know it, but is afraid to take it further because he's afraid he won't be able to control himself. Finally they both come to the conclusion independently (with much prodding from their friends) that if they don't go for it now they may forever lose their chance. After a birthday party for Kat, Derek's cousin, they try the age-old move for starting a new relationship - let's get really drunk and make-out. Unfortunately, their hot make-out session get's interrupted by Nick's sister, Michelle, and her bodyguard/ lover Aaron. They have done the big-no-no and gone against the werewolf clans, called the Coven, and had a relationship that resulted in Michelle getting pregnant. Since Michelle is a very powerful seer, her life is controlled by the Coven to keep her powers in check and to keep her from going insane, which seers have a history of doing. Now Nick is going to put everything on the line to help her sister out, even if means having to give up Derek and return to the society she thought she escaped.

This book was great! I felt like I had to take a cold-shower after Nick and Derek were interrupted during their slightly inebriated hook-up. Their relationship is red hot in part due to the mating instincts they have, but as the story progresses they begin to realize they have feelings for each other that go far beyond their basic instincts. I loved Nick as a heroine, she is willing to sacrifice everything for the people she cares most about and steps up to take care of her sister. Though she does have her moments of fear and doubt that makes her more real as a character. We also get to see more of the secondary characters in this book as well as Jackson Holt and Mackenzie from the first book and we meet Mama Holt. The more I read of Andrew (Derek's construction business partner) and Alec (slightly-crazy born werewolf and Jackson's business partner) the more I like them. They both have their own alpha male sexiness and I can't wait till they get their own books. I like Kat, Derek's cousin, as well, she is not only a psychic but an awesome tech goddess.

The shapeshifter politics also figure heavily into the plot and the prejudices the born shapeshifters have against the made shapeshifters. Nick and Derek are perfect for each other except in the eyes of the shapeshifter movers and shakers. Since Nick and Michelle's dad is the Alpha, the only bargaining chip that Nick has to save Michelle and Aaron's life is marriage and the position her potential husband would gain in werewolf society, a society that Derek doesn't understand and has no power in. The glimpses of Michelle and Aaron's relationship we see are charming as well as bittersweet since there's such a feeling of doom over their forbidden relationship. Things have never been easy for Michelle since she is always controlled by the Coven, the fight to save her child and lover is a difficult dance Nick has to play with the members of the Coven.

This book gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me: sexy romance, political intrigue, and difficult choices all mixed together to make a delicious story. (less)

One friend in particular has had her special attention for quite some time.

Derek is a shape-shifter wolf but was not born as one. He was turned as a result of a vicious attack two years previous. In traditional shape-shifter society, he is considered a second class citizen, not worthy of the attentions of an heiress. However Nicole doesn’t see things that way and she wants Derek. Sensing Derek is attracted to her as well, she has spent the last two years flirting and waiting for Derek to make his move.

After two years of struggling to get his wild instincts under control, Derek decides it’s time to let Nicole know how he feels about her, so he plans to make his move at a birthday party Nicole is hosting at her bar. Derek’s intentions of taking things slowly shatter as soon as the two are finally alone together and instinct overtakes them both. They end up in a very hot after hours make-out session. A knock at the door quickly brings the make out session to a halt though. Michelle, Nicole’s twin sister, and her bodyguard/lover Aaron have arrived and they are in big trouble with the Conclave. There is a death warrant on Aaron’s head and Michelle, who is pregnant by Aaron is in danger. Nicole and Derek discover just how deep their feelings for each other go as they and their friends rally together to protect Michelle and Aaron.

Moira Rogers takes us even further into the world of shape-shifter politics in Crossroads and gives the reader a sense of just how complicated and dangerous the world is without bogging down the story or slowing the action. We see a world steeped in traditions that have become outdated to the point where the rules and laws may harm those they were originally meant to protect.

Crossroads is a story of love and self sacrifice leaving the characters to decide just how far they will go for love, loyalty and tradition. Despite their different backgrounds and social standings Derek and Nick are perfect for each other. Their relationship gives new meaning to the words love and loyalty. I was truly touched by their devotion to each other as I watched them make selfless choices even at the cost of their own happiness. Their personal strength both as a couple and imageas individuals made me love and cheer for them from the very beginning. While their choices were difficult, every decision they made either together or separate were made in love and support of those they hold close to their hearts.

Nick and Derek’s physical chemistry was so intense from their first kiss after hours in Nick’s bar, to a sultry love making session after a run in the forest. These two burn up the pages with their passion and need for each other.

The Southern Arcana world is built well from the ground up and paves the way for what I hope are many more installments in this fabulous Romantic Urban Fantasy. As always Moira Rogers’ secondary characters hold strong and support the plot well. Alec, a dark and broody wolf shifter is sexy and mysterious and so far he is one of my favorite secondary characters. We get a hint in Crossroads that his past is one of sadness and loss and I look forward to reading his story in the hope for his happily ever after.(less)

This seemed forced.

I think I don't have a lot of patience anymore for characters who refuse to go after what they want because they feel like they're unworthy of it. I think this doesn't happen a lot in life, so therefore shouldn't happen in fiction. It just seems ridiculous that a good-looking, well-educated owner of a company wouldn't ask a woman out on a date or that a beautiful heiress wouldn't get tired of him not asking and ask him out her...more

Crossroads is the second in the Southern Arcana series. It could be read as a stand-alone but you have a much better understanding of the back-story between Nicole (Nick) and Derek. Derek has longed for Nick for several years now but has never taken the chance to act on it. Once they kiss the passion explodes between them. Now with the society hunting down her twin sister Nick is risking it all to help save her and Derek refuses to let her do it alone.

Crossroads is a paranormal romance story centered around werewolves and people with magical abilities. As far as shifter/werewolf book series go, the Southern Arcana series is amazing. In book 2 the main heroine is Nick, the alpha’s daughter, a strong female werewolf trying to escape her birthright as the heir to the North America werewolf pack. Derek is a recently turned werewolf trying to control his inner wolf and find balance in his new life. Derek and Nick have always been attracted to each other, but Derek must overcome his apprehension over his new wolfish status and Nick must figure out a way to defy the leaders of the werewolves and lead the life she wants, instead of the life that is expected of her.

Normally, I am not a fan of supernatural politics, but in Crossroads, it works for the story. The politicians in this book are the North American werewolf council, and they are heinous, bigoted, out-dated fools. The council looks down on wolves that are bitten, they are supremely sexist, and they are very afraid of whatever they can’t control, which includes Nick’s seer, werewolf sister Michelle. Michelle gets herself in BIG TROUBLE with the council, and Nick has to step into to help her sister. The rest of the New Orleans gang jumps in to help as much as they possibly can, but events spiral out of control and Nick has to face giving up her life, and Derek, to save her sister. This is where I really come to love Nick, she is a tough, strong, beautiful character who has to deal with bias and chauvinism even though she is a modern girl living in America. She is very loyal and caring, and she handles the tough situations better than most women would. Derek is a fantastic character as well. He is a dominant male, but he is willing to put Nick’s needs first and not act like a jerk when circumstances turn south. Nick and Derek are strong characters, they are easy to relate to, and I was fully engrossed with their story, rooting for them the whole way.

Crossroads is extremely well written, the plot development is strong and the character development is even better. While Nick and Derek are the primary focus of the story, the secondary characters get plenty of attention as well. The side stories surrounding the secondary characters in this book give the book more depth, and the foundation set with book 1 Crux is developed even more. I am now very attached to this Southern Arcana world. Also, I would like to note that the story does not just end, Moira Rogers takes time to wrap up loose ends and set up future stories at the same time. When I finished Crossroads, I was very satisfied with the novel, and also very much looking forward to book 3 in the series.

To sum up why I love Crossroads; with a world of shifters, magic, romance, amazing characters, and political unrest Crossroads is a satisfyingly well-developed and well-written paranormal romance novel. Paranormal readers, if you are looking for a new series, I am calling the Southern Arcana series by Moira Rogers a “MUST-READ” series.

This is the second book in the Southern Arcana series. Crossroads centers around Nicole Peyton, a werewolf, who were introduced to in Crux. Nick and Derek have had the hots for each other for a while but Derek, a newly turned wolf, has kept his distance. They finally give in to their mutual passion and then their world is turned upside down.

I won Crossroads in a giveaway for a discussion hop and it was a real treat of a read. It has all of the elements I enjoy in a tasty read. There is action, lots and lots of action. There are conspiracies and treachery around each corner. I enjoyed Nicole, she is a wonderful character that I would love to call my friend and Derek has incredible strength of character that just leave you weak-kneed - hee hee. The book also visits many other characters from the series and you get a taste of each, which left me starving to read book one, Crux, and chomping at the bit to read book three and four and . . . I would recommend this series to anyone interested in the shifter forum. This book was well written and though part of a series can easily stand alone, if you don't find yourself drooling for desert after the meal and wanting more 

I really should write reviews at once, now I waited three days and that is not good. But I hope I can do the book justice anyway.

In this book we get more of the politics and honestly those shifter bosses are such asses. But then men in power (and women) tend to be that. I liked Nicole, the heroine because she wanted out of that stuffy old world who only wanted her to choose a mate from one of their own sons. and so on and so on. As I don't want to have to erect a whole new ALEC4EVA website and write really bad fanfic about how he meets me and falls madly in love and we have loads of hawt sex and little puppies, happily ever after, I thought it would be better to wait, so I could gain a little perspective.

As you can tell I did love this book. On a purely superficial level, it was filled with hot guys and strong women, plenty of sexxoring, action and drama. On a deeper level, I enjoyed how the author approached the themes of class within a culture; tradition and where and when it fits into a modern world; exploration of duty over desire and how these were all interwoven together to make a great urban Fantasy series.

Each character went through something. I found myself completely invested in Nick and Derek's relationship. Fearful for Andrew and Cat's future. Hurting unbearably for Michelle and Aaron and a little bit sad (and in lust) with Alec. New characters and a widening of the universe were here. We got to see more of the wolf shifter's culture and how tradition and prejudice is slowly stifling them. Politics and the power struggles that were in play as you followed Nick's desperate race to save her sister and keep her relationship with Derek.

My only gripe is there was a lot going on in the book and at times I had to check myself and go back and re-check a conversation. But I think that was more to do with the speed I was reading. I really did devour it.

All in all it was a great instalment to this series. I laughed and cried in turns. (I cried SO MUCH at this book. There were some truly tragic parts.) If you haven't read any Moria Rogers, you are doing yourself a disservice. The series starts with Crux and although each book can be read as a standalone, why would you want to miss any of this great series?

And one more thing.

Derek is a turned werewolf. He struggled for years to get control over his new urges and his strength. His life wasn't easy before the attack. He fosters his cousin, an empath alone and always knew about the supernatural world. But being young and alone with a girl in her teens is not easy at all, count in the attack and you can imagine that his whole life got chaotic. Even worse is that he now is one of the unaccepted made-ones. The turned werewolves aren't worth anything in the eyes of the most other wolves. He has to stand his own to survive and with each time he gets challenged he gets stronger. His attraction for Nicole is nothing he can ignore for a long time. He is fascinated by her and can't keep his eyes from roaming her body. He knows that for Nick having a made werewolf partner could become a great problem. She's one of the most watched and most powerful woman in the wolf society and in the eyes of the majority she should only consider a high-standing full-blood for this role. That so not good for the male ego.

These 2 have serious chemistry going on since the first day they met. That hasn't changed after Derek's turning into a werewolf, okay perhaps the attraction got even more unbearable. It was such a salvation to see these two finally getting together and it was exceptional hot! After this long waiting they really knew how to sate their desires. *wink* It was even more sad for me that all this happened at a so inconvenient time.

I really loved Crux but I have to say Crossroads blew me away. This book is full of action that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Love, family and obligations play a big role and they seem so real that I just couldn't put this book down. The plot is heartbreaking but never too hard to stomach and the mix with funny witty conversations makes it into one of the best urban fantasies I ever read.
I recommend this series to everyone with at least a bit interest in urban fantasy. You will not regret this! Moira Rogers is definitely one of my best discoveries so far!(less)

Nicole Peyton (Nick) is a bar owner in New Orleans. She's also a werewolf - not just any shapeshifter but the daughter of the New York Alpha. She's made her home in New Orleans to escape the politics of werewolf society in New York. Derek Gabriel was a regular guy with supernatural relatives until he was turned into a werewolf two years ago. He was attracted to Nick before he was turned, but since he was turned hasn't acted on those feelings because he's not sure he can control his "wolfy" urges and is afraid he'll hurt her. There's also the problem of who her father is - in this Southern Arcana world, the werewolf heirachy is very defined: natural-born werewolves consider "made" werewolves to be second-class citizens, and the governing body (Conclave) is like royalty. So naturally Derek's a bit intimidated because he's a nobody and Nick is "royalty". Nick is frustrated because she thinks Derek doesn't like her and doesn't understand Derek's reasons for not acting on his feelings for her.

As Derek and Nick finally start to act on their feelings towards each other, Nick's twin-sister Michelle and her guardian/boyfriend Aaron literally show up on her doorstep. Michelle and Aaron are in trouble with the Conclave; Nick knows the Conclave will send someone to hunt for them and knows she must do anything she can to help her twin. Nick gets her sister into hiding and decides she has to go to New York to try to save her sister and Aaron. She and Derek are also dealing with their feelings and urges for each other. The interactions between Nick and Derek were so sweet (and sexy!), and the scenes between the two of them when Nick went to New York were heartbreaking. The ending had a twist or two I didn't see coming, but was satisfying and made me smile.

This book was fast paced right up until the end - there was a lot going on. My only problem was that I couldn't keep all the secondary characters straight as far as supernatural/human and friend/relative/coworker. That was my difficulty with Crux as well, but I think it's probably just a reflection on the fact that I can't keep names straight in real life either.

I give Crossroads 4.5/5 stars - it was an enjoyable read and I'm hoping there will be more books in this series; several of the secondary characters have stories I'd love to read about. Crossroads goes on sale February 9, 2010.

I was warned before-hand that the HEA took a little bit longer to happen than in the first book and I think that really helped me. Otherwise, I would have probably spent more time worrying about how things would work out.

Having read the first in this series, I had high expectations, and this book delivered! This may be my favorite book in the series. Again, I like that the book doesn't feel like just another paranormal romance. I read Crux, the first book in the Southern Arcana Series earlier last year. I'm not exactly sure what took me so long to get back to this series, but I'm so glad I decided to return. Crossroads was that good.

I suppose you could start with Crossroads, but you will get a lot more out of the book if you read Crux first because of the back story.

This isn't a typical 'alpha male falls immediately in love with a female at first sight' type of paranormal romance. That may be why I liked it so much. Not that I don't like that powerful draw that is so common in this genre, but there is something to be said for a love that grows over time and that's what has happened between Nick and Derek.

Family is a powerful force in this series too. Not just Nick's family, but Derek's loyalty to his friends and family. The connections are strong and they run deep. That, combined with the romance makes this a very emotional read.

Speaking of emotional, that may be a tad understated. I even had to stop reading at one point to let Moira Rogers know that Nick and Derek were breaking my heart. Ridiculous I know, but it needed to be said. They weren't the only characters who went through gut wrenching heart break in this story either. Nick and Derek were front and center, but the supporting characters couldn't help them out too much because most of the time their worlds were falling apart as well. All in all, Crossroads was a book that I needed to take some time to recover from - especially before writing this review. Like I said, it was that good.

I love the paranormal world that Moira Rogers has created. I love the characters and the way they interact. I love it all. I think it's safe to say I won't be waiting as long to read Deadlock, the next book in the Southern Arcana Series.(less)

Really enjoyed - Rogers does a good job of making the emotional conflict and challenges seem real. As opposed to fabricated plot devices to keep the couples apart or inner conflict emotional angst issues that make your head hurt from the constant eye-rolling, I believed in the characters doubts and concerns. I may have liked this one just a teeny bit less than Crux, but it was still an absorbing read. I think I just really like Jackson's Southern boy charm.

I love that Nicky and Derek made smart decisions in no-win situations, and that they kept their heads on shoulders even while falling head-over-heels in love. I am also really enjoying how future stories are beings set up without creating endless cliff hangers. I also still think I'd enjoy getting a drink at Nicky's bar.

Nick wants nothing more than to be with Derek but as far as the born werewolves are concerned the turned werewolves are second class citizens and any relationship between them would be looked down on by her family.

Just as they are starting to think that they might be able to have a future together Nick's sister Michelle turns up and she's in big trouble. As a powerful magic user (known as a seer) Michelle's life has always been under the control of the Conclave, it's only the fact that her father is so powerful that she wasn't killed as a child. Michelle is forbidden from having any kind of relationship but she has fallen in love with her bodyguard Aaron and is now pregnant. The Conclave want to see Aaron killed for treason but Nick will do anything to protect Michelle & her family - even if it means giving up the love of her life.

Crossroads is book 2 in the Southern Arcana series and although it can be read as a stand alone novel I'd strongly recommend reading Crux first - this really is a series that you don't want to miss out on! Although this is a paranormal romance it is one that straddles the lines with urban fantasy and I'd recommend it to fans of both genres.

We were first introduced to Nick and Derek in Crux so we know they both have feelings for each other and I for one was eager to see them together as a couple. They actually get together quite quickly which I was pleased about and the passion between them was steamy to the extreme. It isn't just sex though and although their mating instincts play a role you can tell how much they mean to each other. Nick is a strong heroine and one who will do anything to protect those she cares about - her twin sister in particular. She feels guilty that life has been so hard for Michelle and wants to see things work out for her even if it means sacrificing her own happiness to achieve that. I admired Nick for the way she cares about Michelle and was desperate to see how things could work out for them both.

Derek is a great hero and perfectly matched to Nick. He also cares a great deal about his family and immediately offers to do anything he can to help Michelle and Aaron. His life has been hard since he was turned into a werewolf and he is sick of being considered a second class citizen by the Conclave and other born wolves. He has no idea how ruthless the Conclave are prepared to be in order to get what they want but he's about to learn the hard way. Derek is not going to leave Nick to face them alone though and is prepared to do whatever it takes to help both her and Michelle.

Crossroads is a fast paced read and one I read in one sitting because I couldn't bear to put it down. The romance was hot enough to leave me needing a cold shower and I both laughed and wanted to cry as I was reading - it really did have everything you could ask for. I enjoy spending time in the world Moira Rogers (writing duo Bree & Donna) have created and I'm relieved that I don't have too long to wait until the next installment (Deadlock) will be released. The series includes a strong cast of secondary characters and I'm looking forward to reading each of their stories - Andrew & Alec's in particular - it was also nice to get to see Mackenzie and Jackson again (the main characters from Crux). If you haven't already started the Southern Arcana series then I'd strongly recommend you get hold of Crux as soon as possible.(less)

Nick is the equivalent of werewolf royalty, daughter to the ruling alpha she is expected to marry for political gain and produce heirs. It is a fate she has spent most of her adult life running from, relocating to New Orleans and running a bar instead.

Derek has watched Nick from afar for years, fighting his physical attraction to her. Since he was bitten by a werewolf two years ago he has struggled to control his wolf and come to terms with his new life. In werewolf society a bitten wolf is viewed as inferior. But just as Derek and Nick are finally ready to admit their feelings for one another, Nick's life gets thrown upside down with the arrival of her twin sister she would do anything to protect, and some shocking news.

This book very much sits on that line between paranormal romance and urban fantasy, it is darker, grittier and tougher than a romance which is part of the reason why I think I enjoyed it so much.

The attraction between Nick and Derek is so tangible and so believable that from the start I was fully sucked in and engrossed in their story. About two thirds of the way through I couldn't see how they could possibly end up together and the pages whirled by as I willed the book to give me that happy ending. But that happy ending doesn't come without a price, there are some shocks and sorrows along the way that makes the story all the more engaging and left me with a ball in my throat. Although I did read this book on holiday, I finished it in less than a day.

The romance between Nick and Derek is, well, steamy would perhaps be an understatement! This is fuelled by their mating instincts as two wolves, but it felt right and added to the growing love and wild passion between them that they had both tried to ignore for so long. It also adds to the desperation as the extent of the trouble Nick's sister is in becomes apparent and looks as though it will drive them apart.

VERDICT:

This is a fantastic book and a really exciting new paranormal romance series. If this is a genre you love, then I would recommend you pick up both 'Crux' and 'Crossroads' when you next get the chance. I can't wait for 'Deadlock'!(less)

Oh, guys. I absolutely love this series. Love it. And every time I jump back into I'm reminded again of why it's captured me so completely. It's the perfect blend of sex, magic and mayhem. On the night of a birthday party for Derek's cousin, Kat, Derek and Nick finally kiss. Their attraction is about to soar to a new level. Michelle is seer,forbidden to have sex and is pregnant by her bodyguard, Aaron. They will be hunted until they are discovered and dealt with severely. This is the beginning of a most enjoyable ride into the world of Moira Rogers. The plot is woven into a wonderful tale of familial ties, strong friendships, political minuevering, betrayal and sacrifices.
I truly enjoyed this book. My only complaint is at times Rogers use of first name/ last names/ nicknames often was confusing. Additionally, she does not recap much from the first book to remind the reader what occured. However, these issues mainly occur within the first fifty pages of the book and certainly do not get in the way of a truly enjoyable read. I would recommend that if you are new to this series, that you start with the first book, Crux. It will make this read more intense.(less)

This story made me cry which I wasn't expecting to do. I literally had to force myself to go to bed at 2 A.M. this morning with only 30 pages left til the end because I couldn't put this book down but I so needed to be up in the morning to get me kids off to school. Moira made that very hard for me to do which I need to thank her for....^_^. To me, a book that keeps me wanting to read it even though I shouldn't makes it a book worth reading. Learning about Moira's world of shape shifters and magic has been such an incredible experience for me. Like I have said in the past I have not read too many shifter stories but Moira makes it so I feel I really need to make a place in my life for more shifter stories. I am finding it harder and harder to just be a HARDCORE Vampire fan. On a scale of 1-10 I again have to give one of Moira's books a 20 because it is so much more than a story. It is like a thrill ride that you just don't want to end EVER. I encourage everyone 18+ to pick up Moira's Southern Arcana Series, especially Crossroads, and read it for themselves and tell me this is not a great series. I am anxious to read more. The rest of the Southern Arcana Series Deadlock book #3 (Available January 4,2011), and Cipher book #4 (Available September 2011).(less)
