This book is about children in the Holocaust. They were about many stories. The kids were Luncia Gamzer, Herbert Karliner, Markus Reich, George and Ursula Levy, Walter Ziffer, Sarah Engelberg, Mathei Jackel, and Jack Gruener. They all faced problems during the Holocaust.Either becoming a Partisan or go from one camp to another. They all faced external conflicts like one of the kids facing another family cause they wont take her in. And an internal conflict they all face is to either...more
Survivors is the story of how the lives of eight children changed dramatically after the Holocast. These are the stories of eight jewish children and how they survived the terror of the Nazis, the hardships that they had to face and how they ultimately got freed.
This is a wonderful book that teaches us so much about the terror of the second World War, and what some people had to go through to survive it. The stories are wonderfully portrayed by Allan Zullo in such a way that we...more

Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust, by Allan Zullo and Mara Brown, is a compilation of the gut wrenching, yet inspiring stories of eight different children who survived the terrors of the Holocaust. The book begins with an introduction from the authors; explaining the reason for the book, and then goes into a review of what the Holocaust was. After a brief education on the Holocaust, eight very heartbreaking stories follow. Students will learn about how children were separat...more
"Survivors" is about children that went through the holocaust. The book was told in short stories. My favorite one was "I am a Partisan now". It was about Mathei Jakel. He was just ten years old when he joined the partisans. As a test to see if he could be considered and trusted as a "man" he was told to shoot a young woman who had assisted the Nazis. The question is whether Mathei would be able to say goodbye to his childhood forever by committing the unspeakable c...more
This is a non fiction wonderful book. This book is filled with very detailed series of stories of different perspectives during the holocaust. People that had to go on ships to Cuba, people that had to hide the whole war, people who lost their entire family and became the only survivor within, people that went to concentration camps from the beginning to the end of the war, people that where natzis and committed treason and sided with jews, gypsies, homosexuals, handicap etc. During the entire b...more
Suviors is a great book, but it's also with sad the Charcter of the book is Luncia Gamzer she is 8 years old she grew up in the 1930's in Poland. Want happened one day was that Luncia heard her parents talk about the Nazis and the Jewish that don't get a long at all. The Jewishs were getting killed by the Nazis. )':Jews and massacred 4.000 pf them and few weeks later the natonaliists kidnapped 2.000 Jews and were forced them to march to the Jewish cemetery, and shot them..when Luncia knew about t...more
This book was about alot of kids who were in the holocaust and most of their family's and most were send to death camps, where some jews were put in gas chambers and others were shoot, and others die from stavation.
I can connect this to slavrey because in copper sun they were put on plantions where they were killed if they didn't work and they were whipped it they messed something up and they were put on a boat that was tight.
I give this a 5 because it shows what jewis...more

This book is about several different Holocaust survivors. The survivors had to go to drastic measures to keep themselves alive from faking their death, walking a hundred miles, never speaking or moving ever, or from surviving dozens of death camps till the end of the war and they were then free. The conditions in the death camps were so horrible that the number of the deaths of all the Jews didn't shock me. This book made me cry from everything the survivors had to go through and then go on with...more
Response: I have always been interested in learning about the holocaust, so a thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have a very sensitive heart, so the stories were hard for me to imagine. I definitely think that middle school students and high school students should read this book, but I think that even though the reading is easy the content might be too much for elementary children. This is such a fast and simple read which is why I think it would be great to use for older children. They will not be...more
This was actually written for the older child/teen market. It covers true stories of children who survived the Holocaust against all odds, using ingenuity, skill, and often, sheer luck. It's a very interesting read, but I'd read it first before letting your child read it. There are some pretty intense scenes in there, but I do think it's important that everyone not forget this part of history.

This book should be required reading for young adults in school. This book doesn't have pictures, but in a way, I think it enhances the power behind the pages. Each chapter is the memoirs of children who suffered through the Holocaust in different ways and places. Filled with gripping accounts, you feel the power behind the children's fears and worries. Each chapter is immensely powerful and should be read slowly to feel the real emotions these Jewish children had to endure. Every library should...more
This is a heartbreaking, fascinating book. It tells the stories of 7 different children who survived the horrors of the Holocaust. They are based exclusively on the personal interviews conducted by the author. Each child's story demonstrates a different aspect of the atrocities committed during this time. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone under 12 years old. It is pretty graphic and doesn't spare any details. I didn't love the writing...it was very inconsistent and choppy but the power ...more
This short book tells the stories of nine young Jews during the Holocaust. It is more a collection of nine separate stories however in many cases they come together. Zullo and Bovsun have shown that many practices used by guards in slave labour camps, such as random beatings of Jews, were common.
The book also shows the faith many of the survivors interviewed had in living, most making a conscious decision that they would survive at some point during their experiences of the Holocaust....more

I continue to be drawn to Holocaust books and especially books that are about people who survive in large part because of their sheer determination not to give up despite the horrific things surrounding them. This juv. non-fiction book tells about 9 Jewish children (all under 18) who survive to tell their story in large part because someone was willing to help them. I have wondered so many times as I read about people who bring food to or shelter Jewish families if I would have been brave enou...more
luncia is little girl who encountered the holocaust . in the book she i hhavinag in the begining just a normal childhood till she had to deal with going into the holocaust and hiding from nazi soilders with her siblings.then it goes on to other childrens stories with the holocaust . i like this book because i like reading about history and others life stories. i would recommend this book to someone who likes history or listening to other stories. so i really like this book.
It was a difficult read because it tells the true stories of nine children who suffered through things no living creature should ever have to go through. The book is relatively short, under 200 pages, so each child's account is brief but, in its briefness, still manages to be very powerful and moving. I've read a great deal of Holocaust-related literature, but I still had to take several breaks while reading this, probably because the stories focus on the Holocaust's most innocent victims--the ...more
I decided to read this book because I'm really fascinated in the time period during the Holocaust. I like this topic because i have deep sympathy for the jews who were tortured and brutally killed. In Survivor, I felt vigilance for the main characters who had to hide from the Nazis. For example, Luncia and Sarah had to be agile in order for their own survival.
I suppose when you are very interested in a certain time in history, you really like to read about it. I never grow tired of reading of the heroism of survivors of this time.....I guess it all started with “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Come to think of it….I’d better make sure I’ve reviewed it!
This book was very difficult to read, because it had to do with the lives of children. As if what they were going through wasn't horrible enough. I recommend it though, because the stories show true courage, and shows you first hand experiences with the Holocaust.
I really loved this book. I love history so that is why. It was about nine children who survived the Holocaust. When I read the information in the beginning, it was absolutely brutal what the Nazis did to the Jews. But to hear about those nine children's stories was remarkable.
I hoped that this would be a great resource in teaching the social studies unit on the Holocaust. However, it is WAY TOO GRAPHIC for children. Very well written - detailed historical accounts - but I think children would find it disturbing.
This book is incredibly powerful. The stories were all heartbreaking. It really opened my eyes to the vastness of the horrors of the Holocaust. It gives one a determination to prevent such an evil as this from ever happening again.
This is another book that I have read. This book is not for the faint hearted. It's quite graphic and moving as well. Visualizing the stories themselves gave me shivers down my spine. Read it if you can take this kind of stuff.
This is a great book for kids to learn about the holocaust. It is hard to say I enjoyed it since it is so sad. but it is well written. It is amazing how many people had such close calls at death. a must read.
I enjoy young adult fiction because the authors generally weave stories rather than just reporting facts. These children's (now adults) stories are an inspiration for the tenacity of the human spirit.
3.5 stars for this book.
This book follows the true accounts of 9 children affected by the Holocaust. Some were in concentration camps, others were not. It was an interesting perspective on the Holocaust story which is not often told. The resilience of the human spirit is amazing and powerful!

more sadness about the Holocaust. The trauma of living in camps and how thy were protected or injured is something we must not forget I suggest the book for a serious reality check.
This book was pretty interesting, an easy read, 8 true stories of children of the Holocaust, definitely hard to read. But I love reading books like this, and it's eye-opening.
Great book for 7th-9th graders! The book is broken down so that each child's story is its own short story/section, making it easy for teaching, in-class reading, homework and reflection/study. I'm looking forward to teaching this book and hope to return to update my review once the students have read it, as well.
Gripping stories...oh so sad. Amazing how these children lived through the horrors and went on to live very productive lives. I recommend this to teens and young adults.
