Having a Bible that can travel anywhere-in a briefcase, purse, backpack, glove compartment, or computer case-is especially helpful in these busy times, which is why the ESV Personal Size Reference Bible is ideal. Larger and more readable than the ESV Compact Bible but not quite as big as the ESV Thinline Bible, this version is just right for men, women, and students on-the

Since this is actually 66 books in one, perhaps I should review them as I go. This is my second go-round with the Bible, reading it cover to cover, but I'm trying to do it in one year this time rather than the nearly four years it took me last time. [EDIT NOTE: Okay, so it's taking me more than a year. We'll go for a year and a half.] I refuse to review this as a theological text, even though it is for me and that's why I'm re-reading it, as this is a book review website and not a church fo...more
My review: Life.
What I am learning from this book: Salvation. Life. Joy. Truth. Hope. Courage.

Greatest book I have ever read. It is written by a universe renowned writer. Focuses on the Hero of the book, Jesus Christ, who frees His people from bondage and slavery to sin through His sacrifical atoning death...only death could not hold Him, so he becomes raised from the dead, commisions 12 men to build His church and currently sits at His Father's right hand. Story culminates with His return to earth where He establishes His kingdom for those he foreordained since the beginning of time....more
The noted theologian, Bernard Ramm, writes in his book, Protestant Christian Evidences; "No other book has been so chopped, knifed, sifted, scrutinized, and vilified. What book on philosophy or religion or psychology or belles letters of classical or modern times has been subject to such a mass attack as the Bible? with such venom and skepticism? with such thoroughness and erudition? upon every chapter, line and tenet? ... Yet the Bible is still loved by millions, read by millions, and stud...more
It's strange that one of the most important, most dangerous, and most misused books in the world could be so mind-numbingly boring.
Also, anyone who claims they live their life by the bible should actually read it and see exactly what it is they claim to do. I'm guessing most people ignore 90% of what it says to do. Really, you could just collect everything Jesus says into one slender manual and cut the rest, since Jesus's sermons are the only parts anyone should really be proud o...more

The best English translation of the Bible available.
The goal of the translators was to make this as readable as the NIV and as literal as the NASB. If that goal could ever have been achieved (translation in itself really is a difficult task), God used the translators of the ESV to do it.
The one place I have an issue with is Daniel 9:25. It seems clear from the text that "there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again..." should have ...more

The Bible simply reveals the God who reflects the multi-faceted nature of universal justice which no man can conjure in their wildest philosophies.
One sitting will reveal the history of God.
Second sitting will reveal the utter impossibility of us knowing 'enough' about Him.
Third sitting will reveal His overwhelming magnificence.
Fourth sitting... well, only if you have the time.

George Mueller read the bible over 200 times in his life. One of my friend's preacher Grandfather read the bible right at 400 times before he died. I'd like to land somewhere in there if God lets me live long enough and Jesus waits to come back. I've been reading for the last 14 years and the things i have learned would take a book to explain. But it has made me a better preacher a better husband a better person in general.

I absolutely love the size of this book. I carry in my bag all the time. There is plenty of space in the margins to write lots of notes. This book comes in so handy to read on the bus and train. It's perfect for praying while on a commute.
I plan on buying more of these books to give to friends and family.
In fact I find myself writing so many notes in this book, that I'm gonna scan some of the pages with lots of notes and put them online. I just really love this book.

Who'd think (outside the scholarly and denominational groups who debate such topics endlessly) that selection of an English Bible translation could be a daunting task? The English Standard Version is receiving a lot of positive attention by people who care. Give it a try.

What can I say?
I've been reading since the freshman year of High School. I've never run out of things to learn or new ways to appreciate it. There've been highs and lows but in the end... it always comes back here.

A book that is living and active and able to discern the seperation of bone and marrow, sole and spirit. Inside are the truths of life and Godliness, and the path to a personal relationship with God Himself.
I hope I will never be able to mark this as finally and completely "read".
And also, it's small enough to fit in my purse but the printing is big enough to read. It's the perfect size.

Best seller of all time. Most translated. The LIVING book. THE book full of God's good magic. Able to show us the difference between our thoughts and God's.
I love the Bible.
I love the Bible.
The inspired word of God it doesn't get any better than this.
The true story of salvation as inspired and transcribed for several hundreds of years by various authors, with evidentiary support of prophecies made hundreds of years before the events occured.
Very deep reading and sometimes difficult without instruction. Suggest reading the four books of the apostle in the new testement first....Matthew, Mark, Luke and John....(read John first), if you're a newby.

This book is the axis of the universe. You owe you're very existence to this book, whether or not you ever read it. So read it, eh?
Not this edition or translation. Just the New Testament, and the NIV New Testament a couple times within a month or two of this.
Mars Hill started using this translation of the Bible for all of its teachings and I have really liked it so far.
Of course...I love Jesus's word! The ESV is definitely a great choice of translation.
I love getting to know the Author of this one....it's hands-down my fave.
This is the version that we've been using at the Element. I really like it!
my need for Jesus Christ in my life and His life to fill me fresh daily.

Still the best book out there...time to start over again!
Amazing; the Word of God written in modern day English.
I am currently reading Romans 9
Most Powerful book EVER!! Great version
This is without a doubt the most important book I will ever read in my life. It can be at times frustrating, soothing, terrifying, comforting, depressing, uplifting and thought-provoking sometimes all at the same time. One thing that I have come to count on is that it always contains truth. This book is helping me build a foundation of faith in Christ as a savior, confedonte, and friend with whom I am currently developing a lasting and true relationship with. As an American Christ Jesus is the on...more

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.”
