This is a nice, light, easy read with some humor. Not Arthurian, but some of the characters are very interested in King Arthur and the archaeology of 5th century artifacts. The characters visit quite a few "Arthurian" sites like Cadbury, Glastonbury, and Cornwall.
I also read this book, because one of the characters is apparently modeled after Dorothy Dunnett's Francis Crawford of Lymond, whom I adore (the character AND the author!) and this character will return in some of the Vicki ...more

A mad dash romp along the English country side from Salisbury, to Glastonbury, to Bath and finishing on the Cornish coast. It's a light read and almost a parody of all the romantic, damsel in distress, bodice ripper romance novels. Jessica Tregarth came to England to return a ring to a grand father she has never met. She steps into an elaborate scheme of fraud, chases and buried treasures, meeting along the way dashing if somewhat nose challenged writer (of said bodice ripper romance novels). I ...more

So, far I like it, BUT I was hoping there would be some time in the Cornwall castle as I love anything Gothic, and I'm 2/3s into the book, and it has mainly been chasing all around London, Stonehenge, the Isle of Avalon, etc. It is not Peters' best book so far. I figure I'll finish it tonight, so we'll see how it turns out.
***
I finished it, and it was pretty good since it's one of the earliest of Peters' novels. I think it's the second or third one in fact.

I enjoyed the clever dialogue and the unusual 'being chased by bad guys' scenes. I didn't guess the ending and thought it was fun. I would prefer her Amelia Peabody series characters over these ones, but still entertaining.

For the Vicky Bliss fans, this is the first introduction of John Smythe. He refers to his first caper in, I think, Trojan Gold saying he has never matched the sheer rediculousness of it.

Elizabeth Peters mysteries are a fun, light, escapism read full of silly romance, humor and suspense. This book was no exception.

An OK mystery written by Barbara Mertz (who writes as Elizabeth Peters)...I enjoy her Egypt mysteries much better.

Exciting aside: John Smythe makes an appearance here, before he (providentially, of course) meets Vicky Bliss...

A fun book - not much more. I have liked other books by Elizabeth Peters much more than this one.
