I thought this book was really cute! I am beginning to really like Mark Teague books! This one is all about a boy who wrote a paper on how he spent his summer vacation- but it’s full of imagination! He goes to see his aunt, on a westbound train. Suddenly, he was captured by cowboys who had bad manners and loud voices. They carried him off to a cow camp, where he was named the new cowboy. So he wrote his aunt to tell her he would be there soon, and started to learn to be a cowboy. He was given a...more

This was a very cute book. It shows how children have an imagination that can just blossom and keep on growing. The main character in the book is very imaginative and has many thoughts on what he did for his summer vacation. He says his parents sent him out there to help his imagination "calm down". But when he is sharing his story with his class, it is one of the biggest elaborate most imaginative stories there are. This book relates to what we have been learning as future teachers. That we sho...more

Wallace Bleff spent his summer out west visiting his Aunt Fern. Upon his return he tells his tall tale version of being captured by cowboys because they happen to need a new one. Wallace details how he is outfitted to look like a cowboy and even learns the tricks of roping, riding and wrangling. A cute story for anyone who likes reading about cowboys. Included in the front of the story are other possible ways that a child can use their imagination to come up with an answer to "what did you do ov...more

This story takes a typical writing prompt given to students at the beginning of the year and shows what one student chose to write about. I used this story to teach my students that you don't have to list or tell what you did over the summer or the weekend-- you can spruce it up by writing it as a story and include dialogue. You're not really sure what's real or made up, but that's ok! This story takes something familiar and takes it to a different level of writing for those students who may be...more

I wish I had a vacation as interesting as this kid!

When giving his BORING report about his BORING vacation... wait, no, that was somebody else. This kid's vacation included being kidnapped. By COWBOYS! And having to stop a cattle stampede! And being a hero!

Good rhymes, great fun, and cute ending with a bull in time for show-and tell. Anybody who's had to suffer through the first day of school blues should get a copy :)

Our youngest was very excited to read this book together. She said that she'd read it several times in school and really liked it. The narrative was fun to read aloud, with a rhyming and rhythmic text that flowed easily. I'm not normally a big fan of stories about cowboyes, but this tale is very imaginative and entertaining. And the illustrations were very colorful and humorous. We really enjoyed reading this story together.

A Slice of Summer (art/writing)
Read this story, then draw a picture of something that you did over the summer on a white wedge of paper. Write a sentence describing the picture, then glue the white wedge onto a construction-paper watermelon slice.

My dad always used to read this to me when I was little. He had it memorized haha. I love the illustrations and story of how a boy makes his summer sound so interesting. I never really got if he was telling the truth or not..

It is story time at school and he shares his summer vacation. He was captured by cowboys, learned roping, riding and how to make a fire. He can't wait for show and tell.
This is a great read for the start of the school year!

This is such a cute book about a little boys summer vacation. It is filled with adventure and imagination. Great to spark children's imaginations. You could use this with a unit on the west.

A twist on the "summer vacation" paper. A good way to help students to write their own fanciful stories about their summer vacation.

This is my all time favorite book to read out loud. The prose is so fun. The rhymes are great and I love the illustrations. I decorated my boys bedrooms around this a few years ago. We all love this story of imagination and good fun! Mark Teague books are the best!
