Easily Amused
by
Karen McQuestion (Goodreads Author)
Twenty-nine year-old Lola Watson has two best friends, a dream job editing a parenting magazine, and a charming old house inherited from a great-aunt she barely knew. Life would be perfect if only she could avoid her intrusive neighbors. And for that matter, she also wouldn't mind being happily married like her friend Piper, or even engaged like her younger sister Mindy.

I very nearly gave up on this. I found most of the characters unlikable- except the one we are suppose to dislike. The plot was beyond predictable and not well developed.

Recently Karen McQuestion did an amazing thing. She shot through all the roadblocks writers usually encounter on the way to publishing a book and brought two of her manuscripts out on the Kindle, where they are selling briskly.
Over the weekend, I downloaded Karen’s romantic comedy, Easily Amused, onto my husband’s iPhone through a free Kindle app and read it Sunday. I had to finish it for two reasons: one, I couldn’t put it down and two, my husband would be taking his phone to work on Monday.

Karen McQuestion writes well enough but I think needs to work on giving her characters depth. They seem a little 2D when I think she has the ability to make them 3D.
Lola has inherited her Great Aunt's house and neighbors to add to her life along with her overbearing, jealous sister. Through a series of circumstances Lola finds herself involved in a crazy plot to overshadow her sister and her best male friend has ended up living with her.

EASILY AMUSED has so many reviews that it probably doesn't need another one, but I just finished reading this delightful story and wanted to say how much I enjoyed it--and why.
Some reviewers panned this book because it wasn't what they thought it should have been. Sometimes when a book is billed as romantic comedy, there's a tendency to think it should be a laugh a minute, but there are all kinds of humor and all kinds of romance.

I actually really enjoyed this book. It was a short, light, fun read. Lola, an editor, is the older sister to Mindy - the perfect younger sister, friends with Piper - the perfect friend/mother, and Hubert - whose girlfriend decides to kick him to the curb in a not-so-nice way. Inheriting a house from her Aunt May, a woman she barely knew other than the occassional family function - which comes complete with the neighborhood straight out of the Stepford Wives where everyone seems to know everythi...more
This book appeared in my Amazon Suggestions one day so I downloaded it. I needed a light, quick read after finishing a deeply concerning book. I do that to sort of cleanse my pallet before moving on and it really keeps my read eclectic.
Through the first few chapters I found the character development to be weak. I felt that I must be reading the second in a series due to how little the author described the main character but I don't think that is the case. As far as I can tell, this is a standal...more

Easily Amused is the short, sometimes funny, lightning fast read about Lola, editor of a Parenting Magazine, sister to the ever so perfect Mindy, friend to Piper-the-busy- mom and Hubert-- the friend with the girlfriend she can't stand. She lives in an old house on King Street, bequeathed to her from her Aunt May. Lola fills her life with her job and her friends and the occasional online date.

Easily Amused had a lot of potential. I'm 29 and I'm single and I'm a bit of a loner. Sure, I'm a guy who doesn't have a job he likes, a house, or a couple of women fawning over him, but everything else I can relate to. Basically, I liked the main character, but Lola was the only thing I liked.
My biggest problem was the friend, Hubert. A huge chunk of the book involved him and I didn't like him. He was a mess after a bad breakup and he seemed to be a bit of a freeloader and kind of creepy in a s...more

So I originally got this book when I first got my Kindle and I believe I decided on this one because I wanted something funny and the title made me think that's what I was getting. Well I read maybe half of the first chapter and ten never picked it back up. Well I had just finished my last book, and pay day wasn't for another 5 days so I thought I'd give it another go. Well turns out I really liked it. It wasn't nearly as exciting as what I've been reading recently. But it was well written, and...more

Lola is a bit of an anti-social loner who inherits a house from her great aunt in a neighborhood full of nosy people. Early in the book her life long friend Hubert is dumped by his long term girlfriend and moves in with her.
I think if GoodReads allowed it, I would give this book 2.5 stars. This is the 3rd Karen McQuestion book I have read and once again it read quickly, was an easy read and held my interest. But, there was something missing. Honestly, I'm not sure that I ever really liked Lola....more

My Review: I absolutely loved this novel. McQuestion captures the true essence of what Wisconsin neighborhoods are like. It seems like all neighborhoods are made up of; the nosey rosy neighbor, the mystery neighbor, the helper neighbor and the antisocial neighbor along with many others. McQuestion brings together a neighborhood filled with some unforgettable characters in an outstanding novel about family, love and friendship. This book sounded adorable. Your typical unmarried, almost thirty woman finds herself with a few love interests, quirky neighbors and a total brat of a sister.
It was adorable and funny for 2/3 of the book. I found myself laughing during the sister bantering and the way Lola described her kite date with Ryan.
Then it all went downhill... A discovery was made towards the end and the book just ended. Everything was resolved in a few sentences but I felt the ending was rushed. Why spend so much time...more

This book is a fun read. The main character is an almost 30, somewhat anti-social magazine writer/editor who has two very valued close friends and no romantic interest. Her life is suddenly disrupted when one friend, Hubert, asks to stay with her after his girlfriend throws him out and the other, Piper, fixes her up with a great looking, too-good-to-be-true love interest! This, on top of dealing with the upcoming wedding of her shallow, competitive younger sister, her 30th birthday and the somew...more
I found Easily Amused by Karen McQuestion a fun read. It moved rather smoothly and seemed a quick read. I enjoyed the wit and sarcasm of the characters. Perhaps, as some reviewers have pointed out, the neighbors could have had more depth, but I wasn't disappointed by this issue. I found the main characters to be easy to picture and I actually missed a couple of them when the book ended--that's always a good sign for me. Most of the descriptions and scenes were painted in a way which allowed me t...more
A light read... chick lit without big city drama. Lola can't decide between two guys... the handsome mysterious neighbor, Ryan, or her goofy best friend, Hubert. She has a mean spirited sister, a married domesticated best friend, a neighborhood full of snoopy neighbors, and a few strange fellow workers. She has just inherited a house from an old aunt she barely even knew. So amny things happening...just as she is turning 30. I got both this book and Ms McQuestion's A Scattered Life for free from Kindle. Quite a bargain. They are predictable to a certain degree but even though I thought that I knew how they would end, something about the characters of writing kept me reading. I would have liked a little more depth or growth in the characters but they were still worth the read and enjoyable. The author self-published these with Amazon and I wish her luck and think that she deserves a look from the publishers.Better th...more
I honestly can't tell if I'm supposed to like any of these characters. The writing isn't terrible, but the ridiculous approach to character development makes my head spin. The main character is beyond unlikeable--I find myself wondering if this is actually a book about a woman with self-worth issues so delusionally severe that she's convinced herself her younger sister is out to get her and that her married best friend is being emotionally neglected by her husband.

FINISHED Easily Amused, by Karen McQuestion, on Wed. night, having started it 24 hours earlier. Totally fun, funny, sweet, engaging. A lovely little romp, a la Sophie Kinsella, just American, rather than Brit style. It is such a great little escape and well written, so that it was a total pleasure to read. It is a 5* book as far as pleasure goes, but I save my 5*'s for books that are all that AND written with great literary perfection. But don't think for a minute that I didn't totally LOVE this...more
In the midst of a snowstorm and a blackout, I needed to read something that would require not thinking. At all. This was it. I really, truly disliked the main character - she was so self-absorbed and callous, no real emotion, who acts like humanity is an inconvenience. The neighbors seemed like they could have been developed into a more major part of the story (thus moving the focus away from Lola, which would have been a good thing) - I was sad to not get to see more of Brother Jasper and the c...more
Because I am "easily amused" and this was a few dollars on the Kindle, I gave it a shot. Very entertaining, easy read. A bit predictable but I loved the "neighborhood" philosophy. Hubert may be just a bit too perfect, but it was good to see a main character learn some life lessons in an easy read with a few funny one-liners. If you have a lot of time to read straight through, this would be a quick & inexpensive "amusing" kindle read:) Ok, maybe 3 1/2 starts.........
A fun story, but seemed really rushed at the end! I enjoyed getting to know the characters and loved the way the author described King Street and all of Lola's neighbors. I could see what was coming with her friend, Hubert, but I thought it was well developed between the two. My big complaint was I was a little disappointed in how neatly everything just suddenly got at the very end, but overall a fun read and completely worth $2.99 or grabbing it from the library.
Normally I am satisfied with any silly chick lit book when I'm in the mood for it. I bought this book because it was cheap on the kindle. The writing was textbook and the story totally predictable but also incomplete. It felt like she ran out of time so just wrapped up the whole story in the last few pages. Overall pretty disappointing even when I went in with low expectations. Luckily it was over quickly and now I'll move on to much more inspired silly chick lit.
This book was written like a high school writing assignment. Extremely predictable, yet unrealistic plot; copious references to movies in lieu of detailed descriptions ("he leaned on the car like John Travolta in Grease..."); and a generally unlikable protagonist.
This book was really cheap on the Kindle because the author isn't signed with a publishing house. I bought it because it was cheap and it got good reviews. I guess there's a reason this author is unsigned.

A really light read. I enjoyed it because of the speed in which you go through the story, but it had an adolescent fiction feel to it that came and went. Overall I enjoyed it because it took me back to what it felt like to read a book when I was 15 and it was pretty neat in that sense. It's a book written for women, that became abundantly clear fairly early on. I liked the writer's style but her wording at times gave her away as a newer author.
I accidentally downloaded this book to my Kindle. Really. It was an accident. But I read the description and thought I'd give it a read.
I enjoyed every page! There were several characters and you care about each one. It was the usual story of girl meets two boys and who is she going to end up with? There were a few sub-plots and twists along the way.
I usually don't like books that finish with an "open" ending. However, this time, it was perfect.

As I've said before, rating chick-lit is like rating the taste of water. It can definitely be really bad, but it's never going to be really good or memorable. This book was not bad, and it met my need to read something light after reading something kind of heavy. It was your typical single heroine with endearing flaws, her cavalcade of wacky friends and relatives, and the two potential love interests where you can see who she's going to end up with a mile away. Cute and light.
I found the characters childish and shallow. I've finished the book, and while I love to read about anything, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. It feels like it's written by a teenager. The characters are so petty and childish and the ending was predictable. Also, it started really slow...like, really, really slow, and then all of a sudden was in super fast mode at the end. Feels like it skipped a lot, and the plot wasn't substantial.
