Boring, that’s about all you can really say about this book. It’s well-written but the story is boring, the hero is boring and the heroine is boring. You just want the boring book to be over with. It barely makes a 3 star rating.

The h/h don’t really interact until just after halfway into the book—and for a book that’s 380+ pages that’s a long wait I think. They hardly talk to each other so it’s just pages and pages of dull narration and you certainly don’t feel anything for them as a couple. You...more

This review is long overdue.

Highlander Untamed is what started my love affair with Highlanders.

I think that Rory is the absolute epitome of the clan chief who values honesty and loyalty, and whose main focus is for the good of his clan.

Rory MacLeod handfasts with Isabel MacDonald to do his duty, hopefully uniting the two clans. Unfortunately the MacDonald clan is ruthless and is their most hated enemy. Rory's sister Margaret had been married to Isabel's uncle the MacDonald, who used her and retu...more

I was browsing about highland romance and stumbled upon " Favorite Highland Romance author". I read all the comments and Carolyn's comment captured me. I started looking all Monica Mccarty's books and give a shot!

This was my 1st book and I truly enjoyed the plot and history of fairy flag. She has made it onto my must-buy list author. I couldn't help but to fall in love with Rory and Isabel

A good start to a new series.

::sheepishly raising hand::

Confession time: I still like reading those cheesy Scottish romance novel settings.

But, there isn't much new here I'm afraid. Still, I found I was engaged enough to see whether or not Rory would work through his prejudice concerning Isabel and give in to the attraction he feels for her and whether she would be able to make the decision as to where her loyalty should lie. Because the author did do a good job of showing why her loyalties migh...more

Highlander Untamed had everything I was looking for in a Scottish Romance! Love, Passion, Adventure, Betrayal... Rory is a sexy highland warrior, Isabel is an endearing and brave heroine, and all the secondary characters were equally interesting. I laughed and cried numerous times, and felt many more emotions along the way.
All set in the beautiful and mystical setting of the Isle of Skye, the plot moved at a perfect pace with plenty of action and suspense to keep the pages turning. I recommend...more

Although overall I enjoyed this one very much, I did have a few issues with it. I have read a few in the Highland Guard series by the same author and thought I should read the first in an earlier series.
I like the writing of this author and I especially like the true history she works into the stories and explains a bit at the end with the author notes. Its a really lovely touch and I am always surprised to learn what actually happened. Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction....more

WOW! OH WOW!
That about sums up my love of this book.
My first book by Monica McCarthy but definately not my last.

In this we meet Rory Chief of the McLeod's Clan....and well Rory, he is manly, sexy, strong and oh so sexy and scottish. Hmm I never had a thing for Highlanders before this book ;-)

We also have Isabel, the daughter of the Chief of the MacDonald Clan.

The 2 clans are enemies because of a wrong done to one of the McLeods and they have been fighting for the past 2 years. The King then has...more

Warning:
Crappy portuguese translation. Examples:

To ravish doesn't mean to Rape!! YOU MORON!!
"Rory parecia capaz de lhe arrancar a roupa e de a violar." pg 166

And there IT is again!
"..violando-a com gentileza.."
No, no, no, no, no.....

Another pearl:

The story has a lot of potential, but if I had to describe this book in one word, that word would be "boring".

I wouldn't say that the book is badly written but there is way too much repetitions. And as if all the repetitions in the narrative part weren't enough Monica McCarty also felt the need to narrate dialogues or actions just after they happened *bang head*. I have to admit that all those repetitions bored me to tears.

Unfortunately neither the hero nor the heroine were of any help here, be...more

Oh how I love the Highlanders! Highlander Untamed was a good book for my Scottish addiction, which I recently discovered.

Rory Macleod is forced into a temporary marriage with the beautiful siren, Isabella. Isabella belongs to a rivaling clan which Rory despises but because he is forced into this loveless arrangement by the king he will do everything in his power to keep his hands off the tempting seductress as well as maintain a loveless marriage. Rory has every intention of returning Isabella...more

There was a chain dragging this book down, down, down. That chain was the endless amount of narration the author used. As the book began, I thought, okay once the author set the stage it'll move along. It didn't. To quote Mellisa B, "show me, don't tell me."

Instead of caring more for the two main characters, I began to get annoyed with them. Same thing, the ENTIRE book. Gads. How many times did the author go into detail of how handsome Rory MacLeod was or beautiful Isabel MacDonald was? I got i...more

isabel and rory started out with a bang! and i mean a bang. i cried within the 1st 20% of the book. Isabel's story was so heart wrenching. But as the book progressed it lost some of its glory.

The tension, the complications, everything was so palpitating in the beginning that it sets an expectation for the rest of the book so when it starts to wane youre left feeling - WTF.

But having said that, i liked the book. it deserves a 3.5 stars. There are a few things though that kinda bothered me. The...more

I read the Campbell Trilogy before this series, so unfortunately I knew the outcomes of these books before I got to them. It didn't matter. I still enjoyed them.

This story takes place in the middle of the War of the One-Eyed Woman, which was an honest-to-Pete episode in Scottish history. A feud between clan MacLean and clan MacDonald had been going on for some time when, in an effort to gain peace, Rory MacClean offered his sister Margaret in handfast to the MacDonald of Sleat. At some point du...more

Very good! Great Highlander book...and one set on the Island of Skye where water is a part of daily life was really different than what I am used to reading. It was quite enjoyable and the intrigue was quite captivating and mysterious. It was great. Rory and Isabel are two very interesting and wonderful characters, and it was quite charming to watch the two of them fall in love. Dunvegan Castle is quite a romantic setting to watch it unfold in, which is why it was quite interesting that the next...more

Highlander Untamed is a great start to this trilogy. It begins with the eldest MacLeod brother, Rory, who is chieftain of the clan. In order to appease the king and to settle a feud, he agrees to handfast with his enemies daughter for a year. Rory has every intention for picking up the feud when the year is out and has created an alliance with a fellow clan - he is set to wed another.

Isabel MacDonald arrived at Rory's home intent on not only acting/living with him as his wife for a year, but als...more

I have a new highlander series to fawn over! I saw this on a few of my goodreads friend's book lists and I had to give a try. Rory MacLeod is the chief of his clan and what he really wants is revenge against the MacDonald clan for humiliating his sister Margaret. When he receives a missive from his king stating that he must be handfasted to a woman named Isabel MacDonald to try and break the feuding between the two clans. Rory doesn't expect to interested in his new bride, but when he lays eyes...more

If I could travel back in time, no questions asked, I would choose the era in which Monica McCarty writes her novels. I'm entranced once again by the magic of Scotland and it's HighLand heroes. I could not put this book down especially after reading the part about the Fairy Flag. I love when mythology is woven within stories. It gives it an ethereal, fairy-tale of a feeling (like literally). I read this book in 2 days and I'm about to start book 2. I'm on a highland roll. Definitely going to the...more

While this story started out much like other romance novels I've read (man is betrothed to woman, he swears he won't fall for, but eventually does)there was something very heart-felt about Rory and Isabel's relationship. As much as they both try to deny their attraction, it is inevitable that they develop feelings for each other while each keeping their distance and secrets. I was really pulled into this story and I look forward to the next book in the series.

I loved this story. For once I can say that the delicious cover of the book truly captured the Highland Cheif housed within it's pages. Rory MacLeod, Cheif to his clan. A true pilar of a man, muscled and bred to be a leader of his clansmen. Through fate mayhaps, is faced with the joining with one of his enemies, handfasting with the Cheif MacDonald's daughter, Isabel. Though thinking he had the resolve to do so, he could never have known what a beauty she would be and the task to keep his distan...more

I need there to be something interesting going on besides a straight romance. Throw in a mystery, or an adventure, a few plot twists, perhaps. There was nothing like that here, and the book failed to hold my attention. Georgeous man, broad and hansome, handfasts a beautiful girl, on the kings orders, to pause a feud between two Scot families. She must deceive her new husband into revealing the location of a supposedly magical faery flag. The barest minimum of information was given on why this f...more

What do you get when you mix a legal career, a baseball career, motherhood, and a love of history with a voracious reader? In my case, a Historical Romance Author.
