Live a Little!: Breaking the Rules Won't Break Your Health
Later to bed, munching some fries, makes a girl pretty healthy and wise. . . .
Yes, it’s true—more or less. Why? Women do need to eat healthier, exercise, get adequate sleep, and take preventive health care seriously, yet it’s equally important for them to relax. *Because getting healthy shouldn't make you sick*
If you're getting sick of all the hardcore "rules" of what-you-must-do-now-if-not-sooner to be healthy, this this book will provide some welcome relief. Susan Love and Alice Domar share a refreshing dose of reality which gives us permission to end the maddening pursuit of being Perfectly Healthy (as if!) and enjoy being "Pretty Healthy." Exploring the six essential components of health (sleep, stress, prevention, exercise, nutrition, and relations...more

I found this book very refreshing. These doctors analyze the health information we've been receiving as absolute. As it turns out, maybe we don't need to drink 8 glasses of water a day, or eat low-fat, or even do breast self-exams. (The doctors quoted a study that found that death rates from breast cancer were not impacted by completing the self-exams.)
The doctors' conclusion that weight is really a pre-determined set range is convincing although somewhat depressing.

Up-do-date review of health recommendations for women, many of which we think we know but we, and maybe our doctors, are often wrong, according to the most recent research. A very helpful common sense guide to doing the best you can to keep yourself healthy, while acknowledging that we all die* in the end.
*I had a hard time writing that word but when I checked my thesaurus, 'pop one's clogs', 'hop the twig', 'pay the debt of nature' and 'push up one's toes' are much much worse.

Whew! This book made me feel so much better about my efforts to make positive changes in my health. They don't want being healthy to be drudgery or make you stressed out. That extra glass of wine or extra three (or four!) cookies won't kill you if you stay within the range of healthy behaviors most of the time. Seems like common sense, but it's comforting coming from renowned experts.
Good book to make you think about all those health studies mean for you. I like that these two doctors realize we are real people with lives and schedules. I was a little turned off that they knock studies and then use studies to prove their point(s). Overlooking this detail, this is a book I would definitely recommend to all of those who are totally confused about which studies to really take heed. Recommended to those who just want to know they are "Pretty Healthy" too.

An interesting new look at women's health, emphasizing the idea that it's okay to give ourselves a break once in a while.
As a constantly stressed out person, I was excited to read this. I thought it would have helpful info on what to worry about, and what not.
While that is a component of the book, most of it is filler, written in a folksy, condescending manner. I think I would have gotten more helpful tips from Cosmo.
I think Our Bodies Ourselves or a general health guide is better.
