Twenties Girl
Lara Lington has always had an overactive imagination, but suddenly that imagination seems to be in overdrive. Normal professional twenty-something young women don’t get visited by ghosts. Or do they?
When the spirit of Lara’s great-aunt Sadie–a feisty, demanding girl with firm ideas about fashion, love, and the right way to dance–mysteriously appears, she has one last requ...more

I had to add a shelf to categorize this book. I got to chapter six before I decided to return it to the library. There were two things I couldn't get past: 1)The character of the ghost, Sadie Lancaster. She was too obnoxious. And I realize the point of the character was to annoy the protagonist into action, but I didn't think I could handle one more scene where she harrassed the poor, broken, 27-year-old heroine of which I can very closely relate. Which brings me to my second problem: 2)The main...more

I have yet to meet a Sophie Kinsella novel that I don't like. Kinsella remains true to her lighthearted, hilarious style with Twenties Girl and I, for one, am grateful for it.
Lara is comparable to the rest of Kinsella's heroines: sweet, idealistic, and a bit ditzy (but not so much that you end up hating her). Of course the plot is rather far-fetched, but that's what you should expect and want when picking up a Kinsella book. It just makes the story that much more enjoyable.

Twenties Girl is a ghost story about Lara, a young struggling business women who just got dumped by both her boyfriend and her flaky business partner. Enter Sadie, a 1920's loving former 105 year old who just can't rest in peace without her beloved necklace.
Allow me to start by asking: Is there such thing as a reasonable ghost? I know that them being overly demanding is what make plots like this one work, but for once when the all seeing heroine is freaking out I would love to see a super-reaso...more

A thoroughly enjoyable read as we accompany Lara, a girl recently dumped by her boyfriend, stranded by her friend in a job she has no experience with, and her great aunts 23 year old ghost haunting her in her quest to get her boyfriend back, make her job work and find her aunts missing necklace. There are two options for Lara, either to admit she has finally lost control of her mind and shy away, or she could enjoy the situation she finds herself in and take full advantage of it.

its awesome... hilarious, touching, and very pleasing to read.. its a book to read to take your mind off any pressure... i love it.. one of my favorites!
I loved this book.
At first I thought that this is going to be just another Sophie Kinsella book, full of chicklit drama, but it sort of surprised me.
There are several Sophie Kinsella trademarks I have noticed in this book:
1. Lara Lington. The heroines in the her books look like they're always helpless at first, they have this problems in their works and in their relationships. But then at the end, these heroines will be very lucky and make a breakthrough in their careers and they would discover...more

When you say Sophie Kinsella the words that come to my mind are breezy read, adorable & characters which you can relate with, hilarious situations & value for money. Thankfully she doesn’t disappoint us even this time.
When I had first read about the book I knew that she can not go wrong this time as well. Lara, 20 something is the girl of the present generation. Her life is in shambles because her partner in her startup business has eloped to Goa leaving the business in lurch. She has be...more

Lara Lington thinks of herself as a fairly hip twenties girl, living in the 21st century. But the last thing she expects at her Great Aunt Sadie’s funeral is for Sadie herself to appear and demand for the whole thing to be stopped. Lara thinks she’s going mad: how on Earth can she hear and see a dead person? It turns out Great Aunt Sadie is actually a ghost and a ghost with a mission: to track down her missing Dragonfly necklace. Sadie eventually manages to convince Lara to help look for the nec...more
Sophie Kinsella made me feel like I was visiting with a best friend every time I went on another zany, warmhearted adventure with Becky Bloomwood--and Kinsella herself seemed quite a kindred spirit when my sister and I attended her book talk for "Shopaholic and Baby" a few years ago--so I suppose I should not be surprised that Kinsella could make me care so much about the twenty-three year old Flapper ghost of a one-hundred-and-five year old lady who died lonely and came back to "haunt" her pres...more
A good, enjoyable read, with ample seasoning of humour, and of course ,a subtle yet big message--The biggest pleasure in life lies in giving with all our heart...and being. Those that just take from us, do one day, pay it all back...through their nose, more often than not!
After a point, we must exhale, so we can inhale again.

Everything's good once you get past (or get used to) the pushover-doormat-without-a-backbone character of Lara and the obnoxious-and-ungrateful ghost of Sadie. And the ex’s side story, which is really really very irritating. I dislike female characters who are so delusional and without sense. This story is only likeable due to Sadie’s back story and how it was neatly written and woven into the story. IMO.
I didn't enjoy the start of the book. However, it picked up and I enjoyed the humour shared between Great Aunt Sadie and Lara.
Lara is your clueless chick lit character who becomes much too obsessed with a man not interested in her. When will chick lit learn to create strong female characters who are not psychotic? It makes me more tired of the genre every time I pick up one of these books.

An incredible read, had me in tears, had me laughing hysterically. It's such a great read. I definitely need to re-read it, it's just brilliant. I have to agree with other readers who comment that Kinsella's reads can become tedious - I love all her books, and got through the Mini Shopaholic book throroughly enjoying it, but as I went back over the older ones (the Mini Shopaholic was a gift from new to introduce me to the series!) I found the older ones thoroughly irritating in all honesty. Why...more
What is it about Sohpie Kinsella novels that make me want to shrivel up from second-hand embarassment? I mean, why must all of her main characters be liars, I mean, I get why narratively, but I’m starting to find that all her female protagonists are the same basic charater.
20-something single white female living in England who lies to her family and co-workers/boss while secretly being bad at her job, but trying to cover it up. The male love interests are also the same: rich white American male...more

The story starts with Lara explaining why one sometimes has to lie to parents in order to protect them. We quickly learn that they are all going to the funeral of Great Aunt Sadie, who lived to the age of 105, spending her last couple of decades in a nursing home. We also meet the wealthy and obnoxious Uncle Bill at the funeral - he owns a coffee kingdom which competes with Starbucks, and has written a popular self-help book about how to get rich.

Sophie Kinsella, in my opinion, can do no wrong. As you can tell from the books I have been reviewing, "chick lit" is not normally my thing. It takes a lot for me to pick one of those up. However, Kinsella is not your normal author when it comes to that. Her books are poignant, heartwarming, laugh-out-loud funny, and just the thing you want to curl up with at night after a long day. "Twenties Girl" is no exception.

I started reading Sophie kinsella's novels with her book - Can You Keep a Secret? Isn't the name itself is
interesting? That was how i started Ms. Kinsella's novels. Just after this first one, i started checking for her other novels and really loved
her novel 'I have got your number'. Her novels are really interesting and the writing style is superb.

Sophie Kinsella is my all-time favorite author. However, this was not one of my most favorite books. It was a little too long, the story was a little drawn out and for the first time, I had to put it down half-way through and come back to it to finish it up. I didn't find myself falling in love with the main character, Lara, like I have in other works by Kinsella. Actually, in the story line where she is chasing after Josh, a man she has just recently broken up with, I found her to be incredibly...more
To set things straight I’m not much fan of any Supernatural-I-See-Dead-people thingamajig, so I can assure you that this review is definitely not discriminatory of the sort.
I’ve loved Sophie Kinsella the moment I laid my eyes on the first few pages of The Undomestic Goddess, which was given to me by fellow admin, Tere.
Since then I started collecting all her works. Sophie K’s conspicuous sense of humor cracks the hell out of me.

This book is one of my favorites by her! It was my first book I read by Sophie and it was my first taste of chick lit. I'm still addicted to chick literature a year later! I didn't think that this would be my type of book to read, but it's way better than some stuff that is out there! It's funny and cute. I could also relate to the breakup she was going through because my ex and I had been broken up for about six weeks and I was still in my wishful "I want to get back together with him" stage li...more
I really liked this book. But as I was reading I realized something that had been brought to my attention about movies. This is a book that is considered chick flicky just because it centers around a cis WOMAN'S life, all parts of it. Turn this around, if it were about a man looking for his great uncle's pocket watch centered around all parts of his life, it would just be a book about a young man struggling to bring up his business and to find love. For a woman's role to be taken seriously in b...more
First and foremost, I based my rating on this being a chick-lit, so my standards are lower and the rating is more inclined on how entertained I was by reading it and less than its literary worth.
I remember being initially reluctant on buying this because the jacket summary mentioned a ghost, and I usually didn't like ghosts on my chick-lits. But, since Kinsella is a guilty pleasure of mine and I buy all of her books regardless, I decided to get it.

I hadn't ever read anything by Sophie Kinsella; just hadn't gotten around to it really, and the Shopaholic series didn't really grab me. I found this book at the library the other day and decided to give it a try.
It's similar to her other books, I believe, in that the main character is a 20-something Londoner with career/love issues, but the story itself is a ghost story.

I admit. I'm a *huge* Sohpie Kinsella fan. I love her stories. I love her characters! It's always just fun to read. It's never anything life-changing and it's not like I read her books to learn something new. I read them for entertainment. For enjoyment. For a bit of an escape. And I get all of that every time. Once again she gives us a main character, Lara, who is just cute and fun and you feel like you could be best friends. This time Lara ends up being haunted by the ghost of her great-aunt S...more

Twenties Girl is an enjoyable feel-good book with a new heroine, Lara Lington and her side kick, a ghost named Sadie. It is in the same style as the Shopaholics books with a story that centres around a young woman in her early twenties who is trying to make it out in the world on her own. There are certainly some parts in the book that are laugh out loud funny.
