The Nightly News

I've heard nothing but gushing praise for Hickman, so I'm going to jump on the bandwagon by checking out all his early stuff 5 minutes before he starts his gig at Marvel.
This book looks amazing. Stylistically, it's like nothing I've seen before. Every page is a feast for the eyes. The story is also just the sort of thing I like, blending Fight Club-subtle political discourse with a wicked sense of humor and wish-fulfillment violence against "the man."

Overall I thought this was a pretty neat and unique piece of work. As many said the style was pretty cool as Hickman pretty much threw out your standard panel style that most comics use. The story also had an interesting plot twist at the end (but it didn;t really knock my socks off).

Hickman is an astonishingly innovative graphic designer with a great deal on his mind about media control and the corporatization of the world. A quote on the back of this book describes it as a cross between Fight Club and Network, which is an extraordinarily apt description. You'd probably enjoy The Nightly News if you happen to be an Angry White Male who feels like society owes you something. You'd probably like this graphic novel if you enjoyed the macho overload of Fight Club and overlooked any satiric aspects that it had.

Cute book. While Hickman never actually throws away his credibility with the word 'sheeple', there is that vibe there. The plot smacks of the convenience that marks conspiracy theory, which is either a reflection Hickman's personal philosophy, a boon to streamline his writing, or both. One always has to fall on one or the other side of the Great Conspiracy, as there seems to be a lot of evidence both ways, but for the cynical, never enough to convince.

As a fan of Transmetropolitan, and as an artist, and as an American, I have a certain angle on the first amendment, free speech and the Fourth Estate. The Media has a way of looking at things and a way of doing things, its own politics, its own agendas and its own methodologies.
For every reporter like Transmetropolitan's Spider Jerusalem, there are scores of journalists like the ones depicted in the Nightly News.

A brash debut, The Nightly News is sure to get Jonathan Hickman noticed. This gutsy story of a media-manipulated anti-media cult is over the top, violent, and will likely reveal itself to be eerily prescient once the future catches up with it. Esthetically I really liked this book. It's dense and it's design is totally innovative, although I was left wondering why most people were illustrated without pupils. It's interesting to read this after that dude crashed his plane into the IRS building here in Austin last month, and consider the state of misguided acts against the employees of institutions of authority. Insanely refreshing. Hickman kicks in the door breaking down the contemporary barriers and panels and throwing his knowledge of graphic design on the page. And better yet, he pulls it off and spins a "lie told in six parts" that completely obliterates and hits a vein for that little violent streak in all of us. Seriously well told so that you don't know where you'll be at the end. I can't wait to read the rest of his work.
And now I see what all the fuss was about over this book.
Hickman's blend of graphic design and figurework strikes a perfect thematic chord in this tale of a cult's revenge against the slick, inhuman media that has wronged them. A smart, well-crafted, thought-provoking graphic novel. I look forward to catching up on his other work and I hope his new exclusive with Marvel doesn't keep him from doing more of this work.

Awesome. A fictional expose of the media and how they brainwash society...told through a group of militant extremists who have have been brainwashed themselves by a mysterious character known only as the Voice. Hickman did a lot of research and reports a lot of statistics, which can be looked at as a form of propaganda from the book itself. It's really a fascinating look into brainwashing and propaganda - excellent!
the term graphic novel gets misused so much these days in an attempt to sell books--this one is more novel than novel, definitely graphic, and a wild read that is worth every penny. hickman takes off in a bold techno- graphic style that fits his story very well. i have passed this one on to dozens and none have been disappointed...if you like who-done-it thrillers, this is a great one.
A dense, heady read that deals with a lot of modern difficulties. Revenge, modern media as an agent for control, self-truth and, more importantly, self-lies. You could read this, and enjoy it, for the visceral experience and catharsis alone but you would miss out on so much of what he is trying to say. I doubt I understand it all, but I certainly appreciate everything I do understand.
Simply remarkable visual style--Hickman barely uses comic book panels, instead relying largely on full-page visual assaults (most of the pages have lots of concentric circles that look like gun shells) to tell this story of a cult of the infamous attacking the news media that wronged or at least misrepresented them. This is one of those rare books where the side jokes and the art (and footnotes!) are actually better than the story itself. The Nightly News is a dark media fairytale, in the style of Fight Club. It's not believable, but it's not supposed to be -- it's a revenge fantasy on what media is and how it shapes and reflects society.
I guess the writer was eager to match the word count to match the novel of the Graphic Novel and the characters were so vaguely drawn it was impossible to discern. And the writer, while being clever, talks down to his audience a lot. Despite those, it was an entertaining read.
This is the best book I've read so far in 2010. It was an interestingly designed book that made me think a bit. Thoroughly enjoyable. If you read the collected edition, don't read the footnotes until after you've read it through, as they'll spoil the story for you.
Truly lives up to the term "Graphic Novel". This is way more than a comic book. An edge of your seat story filled with graphs and statistics. A blistering condemnation of modern media. A crazy, murdering, anti-hero who's fighting against everything you believe in; and the more you read, the more you're afraid he's on the right side.
More than anything else it was the page layouts and overall aesthetic that stuck with me about this book. It felt like gazing into a crystal ball and seeing a vague teaser of all the visual potential this medium has yet to tap into.
Completely blew me away. There is nothing like it. Jonathan Hickman blends standard comic art with unique graphics design touches to make something new and fresh. The sidebars are informative and really fun (I especially like the one about statistics). Also, completely hilarious.
I have to admit, I was rather impressed by this GN. Hickman takes a serious issue and adds an interesting terrorist subplot. While this may end a little easy, Hickman's use of facts and characters make this a very compelling read.
Stylewise, this book is absolutely gorgeous, taking far more of its visual cues from the world of graphic design than traditional comics. Sometimes the design gets in the way of the storytelling rather than enhancing it, but the overall effect works more often than not.

I couldn't put this down. Hickman has created a comic that is an absolute thrill to read in every aspect. The Nightly News is as stunning in visuals as it is intense in story.

I loved the way this story blended information design elements with graphic design and a kick-ass story. The plot is pretty messed up, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.
A little agro for my tastes (despite the jacket review stating that it isn't agro-for-agro's-sake), but a really cleverly-told tale...and a sheer graphic design tour-du-force.
