Ia dituduh menjadi pacar seorang anggo...more

I liked this book and i was also pleased to decided to get throught.
in my opinion, this book contains a timeless and universal lesson
about the dangers of a security state and an irresponsible press and
their capacity to destroy innocent individuals. The subtext here
is Boll's opposition to the cold war west in general, the
West German government in particular and specifically
the police measures taken to combat the domestic terrorism.
I recommend this bo...more

As I had nothing else to read back home at my parent's place, I decided to reread this slim volume I found on my brother's shelves. I had to read this back at school and I remember I was rather bored by it back then and not seduced to read any more Böll.

Some years older, I could appreciate "Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" much better. Heinrich Böll acts as always as sharp critics of society and politics in Germany, and here attacks the powerful "Bild"-Ze...more

A young woman has a brief affair with a man suspected of involvement in the urban terrorist Rote Armee Faktion (or a loosely disguised version of it). Despite playing no role in political or terrorist activities, she becomes the target of a vicious and unyielding witch hunt by a scandal seeking newspaper (the Axel Springer press' Bildzeitung is also very loosely disguised). Her character and motives are questioned and damaged beyond repair and with very little justification she becomes a figure ...more

Lost in translation? Too much like listening to my father's side of the family? Too "German"? Mayhap. Or it may be that this annoying dude next to me at the gym kept trying to talk to me when I was reading the section that kind of explained a lot of the background. It's hard to put in to words what I mean by "too German." Only another person who is a surviving and socially functioning descendant of a German family in America (and trust me, there aren't many of us) may be ...more

I enjoyed 'The Clown' by Boll, and like 'Katharina Blum', I read the Clown while visiting my folks. Only that was in August, when the sun and the humidity frizzed and dampened me. Katharina, I began and finished during two ten degree days while chewing and kneading my lips, which are now as raw as ground beef. The book was okay... a quick little read, a moral and political tale that is incriminating toward journalism and examines the damage done, the implications and the malleability of langu...more

This book pissed me off!! Not Mr Heinrich Böll... not his language... not the story. The damn press that is the central 'bad guy' in this book! Böll did an excellent job presenting his case. I could feel his anger, his disdain. It was tangible. And did I mention... it pissed me off? I think I would have done the exact same thing if I were wearing her heels.

One thing i found evident, Böll did hold contempt for the press, for politics, for religion (but thought highly of art). It ca...more

A deceptively simple plot which allows the author to succinctly demonstrate that personal honor is cherished, and when it is destroyed, the consequences may be enormous. The humble and honorable people can be the most vulnerable, and in many ways the strongest of individuals. Boll also manages to fit in a few jabs at the telephone monitoring which was still commonplace in 1974, in Germany, when this book was written. Excellent read!

This was a quick read, and it was actually quite interesting. Heinrich Böll wrote the book originally in German in 1974 when tabloid obsession with the Red Army Faction was in full swing in Germany. His novel is a character study of an innocent woman as she is investigated for a crime and subsequently ruined through tabloid media. I kept trying to think of the book as it may have been read in the 1970s when it was more controversial and shocking. For the contemporary reader, however, it is ...more

I enjoyed this. Read it in one sitting as it's more novella-size than novel-size. On the whole I thought it was very good - excellent characterization for example, particularly the well-drawn employers of Katharina Blum - but that the novel needed to be longer for fuller effects to be felt. Slightly disappointed in this sense, especially when comparing it to Boll's 'The Clown'.

It's a terrible example of what the mass media/press can do to a person and how they take what people say all out of context. It's no surprise that Katharina could be driven to kill a reporter. The story was pretty boring and laid out all the facts with no feeling or inflection to them.

I enjoyed the narrative voice used to tell the story because it complements Boll's overall purpose in showing the damaging effects of the media. At the end when the audience finally hears from Katharina, I'm not sure that she has been painted as an overly sympathetic character.

a good solid book by one of the great german authors of the 20th century. definitely enjoyable, definitely informative, although the author makes a point to inform in a very subtle and ambiguous way, while at the same time using the 3rd person narrator and a few of the main characters to inform (literally) in a very bold and sometimes obnoxious way. this book gives one a glimpse into the 1970's in west germany, when the country is dealing with small groups of terrorists, socialists and communist...more

Quick, deft. An interesting way to tell the story. The critique of media culture may not be quite as fresh as it once was, but this is still a nice swift read.

I haven't read any other Boll, but I now intend to. (Recommendations? Maybe _Billiards at Half-Past Nine_?)

Another classic from German postwar author Heinrich Böll, this story is true to its (full) title. Beginning with her admittance of a crime, the tale is told in reverse, revealing exactly how it is that Katharina’s honor was lost, why and how the violence began, and where it led. Although the book was published in 1974, it’s a remarkable indicator of the state of media frenzy and mud-slinging that occurs today. It’s an intriguing must-read in either English, or its native German.
