This is an incredibly dense and quite informative history of the book in America. It can be overwhelming at times (Lehmann-Haupt loves to use "typical" examples that stretch on for pages and sometimes read like the "begat" sections of the Old Testament), but is generally recognized at the most authoritative work on the subject in a single volume. For information on book history after 1952, look elsewhere.
This book is very dense and scholarly, but it contains some fascinating information about the early days of printing and bookbinding in the US and the development of 20th century publishing. Occasionally gets mired in statistics, but still contains some great anecdotes and observations.
