It was probably the best non-scientific book about psychology I've read. A great book for anyone to start deeper understanding of practical psychology.
Author vividly reveals experiences of her and what is it like to have schizophrenia and how she finally managed to conquer it.
I liked simple, but not trivial explanations of basic notions of psychology and mental health issues. Author also questions beliefs that experiences of people who have schizophrenia have no relations between themselves, n

Some of Arnhild Lauveng's sentences seemed to run on a bit, and I don't think this was entirely a result of the translation. Overall an enjoyable and readable memoir from a woman who was obviously severely disturbed for a long time. Some of the self harm and suicide attempts were a bit difficult to read about, but I thought Arnhild did a good job explaining the nature of the decline that led her to that place of delusion and despair. Although the narrative chronology jumped around a bit, I think ...more

The book walks through experiences of Arnhild Lauveng, an x-schizophrenic. She talks about how sometimes patients are treated as if they aren't humans, how even during her worst experiences she still had humanly wishes which she was made to feel guilty for, and her personal experience on, now obsolete, antipsychotics etc. She also finds a way to interpret her hallucinations and make them meaningful, and eventually learned to overcome their power on her. She also gives this hope that a person doe ...more

The story of a young girl suffering from paranoid schizophrenia is written sincerely, though the language is far from being emotional. The author shares her thoughts and opinions concerning the disorder, based on her own grave experience. Quite an interesting, thought-provoking, and unexpectedly optimistic book.

Worth reading. Possibly the first decent book written by someone about their own experience of having schizophrenia (that I've read, anyway).

At first I criticised the author for being just another successful show-off piece akin to Elyn Saks but in the end it did not bother me at all that she had achieved education as a psychologist - rather it is a fortune, probably something that has aided her in learning to observe herself and the world so objectively.

This is not what I expected. I expected to read about her "road back", how she defeated schizophrenia. The book did not flow well, there was a lot of back-and-forth information. She seemed to want to give other psychologists advice on dealing with their patients. They should treat them like people, not their diagnosis, which should be common sense to most of them.

A gréât book to understand what goes on inside the head of someone with this disease and most importantly, how the environment and the medical profession, often with the best intentions, aggravate the problem.... Welcome to modern psychiatry....

“Og all min handlende utagering hjalp like lite som ordene hadde gjort.
