Ok, I tried. I am not going to read this tripe any further.

From the first 50-ish pages that I did read, this books sounds somewhat like the show 'Sex and the City'. Rachel is part-Miranada - a not so good looking lawyer, and part-Charolette - miss goody two shoes who wants to find a husband and settle down. I only acknowledge that I read this book so I can say how much I hated it. The two main characters are completely unlikable, one for being completely self-absorbed and selfish, and the other for being so spineless and whiny. So spineless, in fact, that the action of her sleeping with her friend's fiancé wasn't even a credible one. The further I got into it, the more I was disgusted with it. I loved this book and have passed it on to other friends! Thanks to Kristi for turning me on to this author.

This is one of the best chick-lit books ever. The follow-up "Something Blue" was almost as good. The story focuses on two lifelong best friends, Rachel and Darcy. The first installment is told from Rachel's perspective; the second book is told from Darcy's perspective. Very clever.

Despite all my protests and misgivings about a book on infidelity, I was surprised that had the urge to get back to the story and find out what happened. For that, I wanted to give the book 4 stars, but I just couldn't because, well, it's a book about infidelity, and not just about infidelity, but the view point that there's nothing wrong with it since the couple isn't married yet.

The book starts with A LOT of backstory. It's eventually important to Rachel and Darcy's relationship, but it sure makes the beginning drag. What I wanted from that opening scene was not memories of Rachel and Darcy as kids. I wanted to be pulled into the scene and believe the sequence of events that ended with a girl in bed with her best friend's fiancee. I needed more to get me there. The lawyer-presenting-to-the-jury bit afterwards was amusing, but it didn't get me into her head to justify how it happened. I needed more to sympathize with Rachel.

Maybe what I needed to sympathize with her more was a reason Dex was worth risking a friendship over. All I got from Rachel were some vague stereotypes that he was handsome and smart. Even in the scenes he was in, I didn't get any personality from him. He was like a fuzzy character in a dream that never quite materializes into a real person. I had to take Rachel's word for it every time she said she loved him because I didn't get anything out of their relationship. When Ethan asked Rachel if she was only interested in Dex so she could win something over Darcy, I thought that must be it. I'm still not convinced that isn't true. In the end I had a hollow feeling, and it wasn't just at the things lost. It was that I still didn't know Dex and didn't know if he was worth it to either girl. It made the ending mean a whole lot less to me.

The whole book I kept trying to get inside Dex's head to figure out why he was cheating, why he wouldn't make a decision, why he stayed with Darcy, why he kept leading Rachel on, why he did anything, but I couldn't pin down Dex's motivation. While it bothered me to have such a pivotal character so undefined, it kind of worked to keep up the suspense. I had no idea if he liked Darcy or Rachel, if he was using Rachel or Darcy, if he was conflicted about this whole thing or a player, or if he was going to pull some twist in the whole drama. Darcy was supposed to be the volatile unknown, but I almost think Dex was more of one.

In the end, I don't think the story is as much about the love triangle as it is about friendship. The complexity of childhood-turned-adult friendship was very well done and I even though I wanted to strangle Darcy, I could see why Rachel had remained friends with her. Interesting that the character who moved in to late to reach best friend status (who was also so passive) was named Annalise. I don't know what that's like at all (read: sarcasm). I had trouble with the route and justifications and conclusions that the romance took, but looking at the story as a journey of two friends, I liked it a whole lot more.

ETA: I liked the movie. Dex was still a cardboard, but I could see better what Rachel saw in him and how he was conflicted. John Kransinski stole the show.(less)

It wasn't bad as chicklit goes, but I don't know how sympathetic I can be to characters who are betraying their fiancees and best friends. Plus, in order to make the cheating something "okay," a lot of energy is put into making Darcy really off-putting and Rachel really kind of pathetic. I liked Hilary and Ethan a lot (though in all other chick lit books Ethan would have been either gay or the guy Rachel actually ended up with), but the central relationships just left me cold.

I read this book in two sittings. I know it is a little controversial: some people adore Rachel for 'stealing' her best friend Darcy's fiance. And some others think it is just immoral.

Well, this was my first, and now probably last, foray into "chick-lit." I found the characters to be totally unbelieveable. A "consummate good-girl" would never have an affair with her best friend's fiancee, despite Darcy's shortcomings as a friend. Unlike a lot of "chick-lit", this one was semi-believable and I actually liked the main character (Rachel). She was a smart girl, not all obsessed with shopping and spending money...she just seemed like a normal person, someone I might hang out with. It's a testament to Emily Giffin that I have read Something Borrowed five times and I still don't get bored, I still don't change my opinions on the novel. I don't like cheating - in novels, in real life, I don't like it, I hate it in fact, yet everytime I read Something Borrowed, I root for Rachel. There's something innately wrong with Darcy that always ticks me off. I don't necessarily think that what Rachel does is right, but (and this might sound wrong) Darcy doesn't deserve Dex. I know it's wrong to say that, but ever since I first read the novel, Darcy and Dex never made sense to me and Rachel and Dex did. I even read Something Blue before I knew about Something Borrowed, and still my opinion was unchanged so, you know, it's hardly going to have changed now.

The characters are excellent, I loved Rachel and I understood how she felt. Understood what it was like to have a best friend who always gets what she wants, to have a best friend who constantly outmanouvers you. Everything Ethan and Hillary say about Darcy is correct; it's like it's a game to her, it's like 'Let's see what I can do to beat Rachel today'. That's not friendship, it's like she sees Rachel as an enemy she must beat at all costs and I can certainly see why Rachel worried the Dex relationship was merely her getting back at Darcy. I never liked Darcy. Never. She's consistenly shallow and only thinks of herself. The only time she's in the least bit redeeming is the final quarter of Something Blue.

Emily Giffin is one of the authors who made me a Chick Lit fan and Something Borrowed is quite easily my favourite Chick Lit book ever. It says an awful lot that Giffin's later books haven't held a candle to Something Borrowed. I would love it if Giffin ever wrote a third novel to feature Darcy and Rachel, particularly since the Rachel/Dex scenes are kept to a minimum during Something Blue. Although there's undoubtedly the worry that another novel may weaken what is a truly stellar novel all on its own. If there's one novel that stands the test of time it is Something Borrowed. It is a novel every Chick Lit fan and writer should read because it's simply amazing. (less)

This is my first conscious foray into chic-lit (I know some would frown at my use of the term, chic-lit, but I just don’t see anything wrong with it). I say conscious because I deliberately chose to read the book not for the reason that I don’t have anything to read anymore, but for the reason that I want to discover whether the chic-lit genre will find my way into my plate. And it did.

Something Borrowed is about 30 year-old Rachel, a lawyer working in a big firm in New York, single, and unhappy. Her best friend, Darcy, is pretty, popular, happy, and getting married in a few months to Dexter. Rachel is the maid of honor. On the day of her birthday and after several drinks, Rachel finds herself in bed with Dex. What is worse, she doesn’t feel any regret at all. What will happen to Rachel and Darcy’s friendship? Will Rachel ever find true love?

Let me say this outright. I do not subscribe to the moral values (or the lack of them) in the story – living in, premarital sex, cussing, and making out with a person you just met. What motivated me to finish the book is because I want to see how the characters will respond to the situation. I gave the book, and the characters, lots of allowances and reserved my judgment until after the end.

It turns out that Something Borrowed has a sequel and so I am postponing my final judgment until after I’m done with Something Blue too.

Okay, on to this book. Something Borrowed is told through Rachel’s voice and I am very partial in favor of first person narratives. What I like about Rachel is that she is very honest in her feelings and her insecurities. She’s so human, and even though I believe I will not find myself in her shoes (first, I’m already married, and second, I love my job), my heart still goes out to her every time she’s at a loss about what to do with what happened.

This my 1st Emily Giffin book. I know that's heresy in the chick lit world, but I was clueless until I saw trailers for the movie version that was just recently released. Movies are always adaptations, so I thought it best to read the book before I watched the movie.

Second Glance: Intellectually, I know how it sounds, that this is basically the story of the other woman who's wrecking a happy, already established couple, but it's far from it. It's complex and all the decisions made were complicated and hurt in more ways than one. I was so surprised to find myself getting so invested in Rachel's story, rooting for her against Darcy - in part because Darcy is a very toxic, self-centered friend - and wanting her to get the guy. It was sad learning of why she had let him get away all those years ago.

But I did got to the point where I wanted both Dex and Rachel to grow some balls, she to make a stand instead of counting down the weeks and days left before the wedding, and him to bloody make a choice already instead of keep on saying he loved Rachel but that it was complicated. Though otherwise he sounded like a wonderful guy, Dex did come off as a wimp sometimes, and so did Rachel. I did love Ethan and Hilary -two of Rachel's closest friends, who help put things into perspective once or twice.

Bottom Line: Over all, I liked this Something Borrowed quite a lot but a few scenes before the ending did felt somewhat scripted and, though they were fitting of the characters involved and were far from neat, they felt convenient. I will read the sequel Something Blue, and I'll watch the movie, though.

By the way, the book is getting a different cover for the movie-release.

Controversial is what this book is, wooey!! I both loved and hated every character. Except Ethan. I just love Ethan! I also loved and hated every situation and possible conclusions of this story. Not in a - I hate this story - way. It's just a very no win situation for everybody. It's still a fun book for sure. A light and fun chick-lit to give you a break from changing diapers (or other similarly stimulating tasks that applies to you).

Well, I enjoyed the story, very engrossing. I had a difficult time tearing myself away from the book. However.......

My favorite characters in the book were Ethan and Hillary, the friends. I found myself rolling my eyes at Dex around the time of the bachelorette party and then at Rachel for dragging her feet with the 4th of July conversation and/or the ultimatum.
