Hell Fire by Ann Aguirre, #2 in Corrine Solomon series
I really like Ann Aguirre’s writing style. I enjoy the worlds she creates and the characters that inhabit those worlds. I really do like a lot about this book, this series but for some reason this book and this series does not click with me. I cannot figure out why. Maybe a list will help.

Second in the Corine Solomon urban fantasy series revolving around Corine, a woman Gifted with the ability to read the history of any object.
My Take
There are two objectives in this story. Corine must decide how she feels about Chance---the ex-boyfriend who wants her back in his life---and bring those responsible for her mother's death to justice. And, oh man, does Aguirre take us for a ride!
The primary storyline is discovering the secret of what is terrorizing the forest and why so many are d...more

Yes, Corine is a bit of a waffler when it comes to relationships. But I didn't mind it. I kind of like her emotional immaturity. It humanizes her for me.
I did have a problem with Chance wanting her back so badly despite the fact that his luck may be the death of her. He doesn't want to give up the luck, even though he says he will, and he doesn't want to give her up. Selfish? Yeah. There has to be more to this than what we are seeing because how can he feel about her what he says and then want...more

Corine and Chance, her ex boyfriend, visit Kilmer, a sleepy town where Corine used to live and where her mom died. Or rather was murdered. Corine wants to solve that mysterious death in order to move on with her life. It won’t be easy. Kilmer is truly a town straight from a horror movie and apparently nothing changed much there since 1950s – no internet, no ATMs, no public phones, no contact with the outside world.

Yeah I had to stop reading this. I got about 30% into the book & couldn't take all of the lamenting about Chance again. Then add Jesse to the mix.
I think Jesse is fairly boring & such an obvious plot device to add some tension & Corine's inner dialog about him, her potential feelings.... It was like shampoo, lather, rinse & repeat.
The plot itself, could be interesting but BD (the 1st book) was really such a hot mess of action & emo inner dialog - Corine was not wrong when s...more

Ann Aguirre is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.
Hell Fire was one of those books I didnt really want to read when home alone at night, but I did anyway, as the only other option was putting it down and waiting to finish it later. It was urban fantasy, with horrific overtones, and the horror was done perfectly. It made my flesh crawl with goosebumps and every little noise made me twitch.

Another fine installment in the Corine Solomon series! This time Corine travels to her hometown, Kilmer Georgia, in an attempt to find out the truth behind her mother's murder. With her is her supernaturally gifted ex, Chance, and her devoted Chihuahua Butch; they are soon joined by policeman Jesse Saldana, panic-stricken when his gift of empathy tells him Corine is danger. Oh yeah, and Kilmer, Georgia? Isn't recognized by his GPS or the citizens of any neighboring towns. Corine finds that her m...more
It's not often that the second book in a UF series is better than the first, but this one is. Not that the first was bad -- I enjoyed Blue Diablo and was thrilled to win an ARC of the sequel. But Hell Fire is better; the main characters change and grow, a really fun new character is added, and the fantasy elements get richer and more complex without changing the basic rules that the author established in book one. I love this kind of paranormal story -- no vampires or shifters, but individuals w...more

This second book in the series of Corine Solomon, finds Corine and Chance on their way to Corine's childhood hometown, Kilmer, Georgia. Kilmer (a fictional town,) is also where Corine last saw her Mother alive. Corine is driven to find out what really happened that night her Mother died in a fire in their home.
Chance is Corine's ex-boyfriend and has exceptional good luck. Such good luck comes with a price to the person closest to him, even possible death as in Corine's case.

i am going to be in the minority of this one and say i loved it. i have a thing for Chance what can i say?
this story picks up pretty much where we left off in book one. corine is looking for what/who killed her mother and trying to use Chance's luck to help her find it.
woven throughout the plot is the ongoing arc of corine's personal life and the somewhat triangle between herself, Chance, and Jessie. this is here you start to loose me. being with chance is risky. it could be deadly. that is a...more

Perhaps I am a glutton for punishment, or maybe it's just my love of Aguirre's Sirantha Jax series that made me decide to go against my previous decision of not reading this book.
Yet again, I am having trouble with the rating for this one. I love Aguirre's writing, and I thought that the storyline in this one was MUCH better than the storyline in the last one. A creepy haunted town, mysterious deaths, curses etc.. All cool.

While in some ways, Hell Fire didn't have the same fireworks as Blue Diablo (read: no zombie armies) it still was a compelling and exciting read. I didn't want to put it down, and was anxious to get back to it when I did have to stop reading.

The reasonable: I found this book much more tightly plotted than Blue Diablo, the first in the series. For one thing there isn't as much worldbuilding from scratch to do, and for another the premise was more intriguing to me: a haunted...town? Corine is tracking down the people who killed her mother when she was a child, and in the meantime comes across a demon and a group of people trying to control it. Very creepy. It also contains a number of milestones for Corine that I think will make for a...more
I definitely liked this book better than Blue Diablo. (I also love that the book titles are alcoholic concoctions that Corine chooses to imbibe in). I'm still having a hard time really liking Chance. Admittedly, I wanted to like him more, especially because he is different in this book from the last (for several reasons), but I just can't/don't. The book starts with just Corine and Chance on an adventure. I think if Jesse Saldana hadn't eventually shown up (and another character been introduced)...more

Corine Solomon returns to her hometown of Kilmer, GA to find her mother's killer. But when she gets there, she finds a bigger mystery than she originally thought.
One of my favorite things about this book is the town itself. Aguirre creates this super-creepy town, where the trees watch you and the townspeople keep their secrets, all the while staring you down with dead eyes and bizarre behavior. The town becomes a character in its own right, not only contributing to the overall atmosphere of the...more

The beginning of this book started off much like the previous book, slow when it shouldn't be. About halfway through the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the story line was moving along nicely. As anticipated, the second book in the series was better than the first. Although I've never been a fan of love triangles, someone's heart always gets broken in the end. The end of this book of course is no different, I was so sad for Chance. I really loved his character, even with all of the...more
This book has me thinking about love triangles, specifically the different flavors of love triangles where there are 2 men and 1 woman.
1) There are love triangles where you want to see the heroine caught between two men, hopefully sampling them both to some extent. *g* Where you enjoy drawing out the foreplay.
2) There are love triangles where you want the happily ever after to involve m/m/f, or at least m/f/m.
3) There are love triangles where your dominant reaction is "just choose already", wit...more

Another enjoyable story told by Ann Aguirre. The story of a girl who sets out to get revenge for the death of her mother. Interesting events take place when Corine Solomon returns to her home town of Kilmar Georgia. Kilmar was always a strange place but it had gotten much darker and more sinister sense she left fourteen years earlier. Now she wants to find out whats caused this shadow over the town and find the group that killed her mother.

What I like about Ann Aguirre's depiction of her Corine Solomon character is that Aguirre is not afraid of writing in female anger. Corine is no longer willing to sacrifice what makes her happy for a man, even if it hurts the ones she loves. It is something for a female character to refuse to lose her sense of self. When her trio is joined by a gifted female teen, Shannon, Corine is not threatened by Shannon's bravado and attitude because she understands those needs in herself as well. Don't get...more

This one really put me down. It gets one star because the head character is really annoying, and the ending to this suck, IMHO. I'm not going to continue reading this series, most of the time I try to finish series I start reading, but this one I just didn't like that much, and a lot of it is because the main character spends most of her time whining about a guy who at least tries hard to be with her, she offers nothing back and is so... I just don't like her, and because she annoys the heck out...more
Corine calls in the promise made by Chance and returns with him to the small town that was the site of her mother's tragic death and her unhappy childhood. The town has not changed much but feels even more oppressive than it did in her childhood and Corine discovers that some mysterious force prevents modern technology from operating in most areas. The town itself seems to be conspiring to keep Corine from discovering what actually happened to her mother so many years in the past and events esca...more
Hell Fire was a great follow up to the first book in this series. This book took us back to Corine's hometown to figure out what went wrong to have her mother be killed and this gift forced upon Corine. Corine and Chance (whom I personally LOVE) drive to Corine's hometown where Chance promised to use his luck to figure out what happened to Corine's mother. This book was a mystery from beginning to end. It slowly revealed the big picture, but I never would have guessed it by myself. At the end of...more
Not bad. But the series moved away from the characters that I had grown to like. Maybe the whole returning home bit should have been saved for a different book not the second one in. Moreover, Chance has yet to grow on me. The constant sizzling attraction between the two seemed a little forced to me, and the love triangle thing just doesn't interest me. Why is that? Well, because no one possess a big enough pair to deviate from the usual path a love triangle takes. So I'd rather not deal with th...more
